Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been established as an effective treatment modality in patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS) and the uptake of TAVI is rapidly growing in the Asia-Pacific region. However, there exist a heterogeneity in the management of aortic stenosis and the use of TAVI among countries in the region. Reasons for these differences include anatomic variations, disparity in healthcare resources and infrastructure, and the lack of consensus on the optimal management of AS in the Asia-Pacific region.

Background: Metabolic risk factors are a significant cause of global burden among adolescents and young adults, but there is a lack of attention to the burden attributable to these metabolic risk factors globally.
Aims: This study aims to provide comprehensive estimates of five important metabolic risk factors and the attributable disease burden in people aged 15-39 years from 1990 to 2021, based on the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD) database.
Methods: Global total deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) were used to describe the burden attributable to five common metabolic risk factors, including high fasting plasma glucose (FPG), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high systolic blood pressure (SBP), high body mass index (BMI), and kidney dysfunction, in adolescents and young adults.

Background: Common metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), have become a global health burden in the last three decades. The Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) data enables the first insights into the trends and burdens of these metabolic diseases from 1990 to 2021, highlighting regional, temporal and differences by sex.
Methods: Global estimates of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and deaths from GBD 2021 were analyzed for common metabolic diseases (T2DM, hypertension, obesity, hypercholesterolemia, and MASLD).

Papillary adenomas, known precursors to papillary adenocarcinoma, warrant close monitoring due to their malignant potential. Historically, surgical resection represented the mainstay of treatment for papillary adenomas with intraductal extension. However, recent advancements in endoscopic techniques have facilitated the adoption of endoscopic papillectomy as a minimally invasive alternative in carefully selected cases.

Aim: The aim of the third Asia-Pacific Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference (APAC APCCC 2023) was to discuss the application in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region of consensus statements from the 4th Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference (APCCC 2022).
Methods: The one-day meeting in July 2023 brought together 27 experts from 14 APAC countries. The meeting covered five topics: (1) Intermediate- and high-risk and locally advanced prostate cancer; (2) Management of newly diagnosed metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer; (3) Management of non-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer; (4) Homologous recombination repair mutation testing; (5) Management of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer.

Endoscopic polypectomy is essential for the prevention of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome-associated complications, including intussusception, intestinal obstruction, and malignant transformation. Conventional polypectomy is the preferred approach, but it can be challenging to achieve in patients with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome because of the high polyp burden and polyps located in areas with difficult endoscopic access. This case report highlights 2 different techniques of ischemic polypectomy and its advantage compared with conventional polypectomy in this subset of patients.

Interleukin-17 inhibitors are effective treatments for plaque psoriasis. However, these medications have been linked to the development of new-onset inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the worsening of existing IBD in some patients. This case report describes a patient with plaque psoriasis who developed new-onset Crohn's disease after treatment with ixekizumab, an interleukin-17A inhibitor.

Primary hyperparathyroidism commonly affects elderly women. When present in the young population, it is usually asymptomatic, most frequently due to a parathyroid adenoma and the definitive management is surgical excision. Uncommonly, 5-10% of patients fail to achieve long-term cure after initial parathyroidectomy and 6-16% of them is due to an ectopic parathyroid adenoma that will require focused diagnostic and surgical approaches.

Hepatopancreaticobiliary cancers are among the most diagnosed cancers in the world. However, although high-income countries have the highest incidence rates, low- and middle-income countries have the highest mortality rates. In this article, we describe the geographic distribution of board-certified hepatopancreaticobiliary surgeons who provide surgical management for patients with these diseases in the Philippines.

Objectives: We determined the incidence of post-COVID-19 syndrome and its association with COVID-19 severity among patients discharged in a tertiary private hospital.
Methods: This single-center prospective cohort study included admitted patients 18 years old and older, diagnosed with COVID-19, discharged recovered, and interviewed at least 6 months from onset of COVID-19. Incidence of post-COVID-19 syndrome obtained and its association with COVID-19 severity was analyzed.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has challenged healthcare systems worldwide since late 2019. The interleukin-6 inhibitor tocilizumab is one of the most studied agents with a proven benefit for patients with severe and critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia. Known adverse effects of this agent include upper respiratory tract infections, headache, hypertension, and transaminitis.

Background And Study Aims: A recent consensus defines a delay in hepatitis B (HBV) diagnosis as presentation with late (hepatocellular carcinoma or decompensated cirrhosis) or advanced (fibrosis ≥ 3) stage disease. We aimed to determine the prevalence of late and advanced stage presentation among chronic HBV (CHB) patients and to determine factors associated with late and advanced stage presentation.
Methods: Consecutive CHB patients seen from 1 January 2007 to 31 December 2018 were included and analyzed on January 2019.

Female breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide; however, while high-income countries have the highest incidence rates, lower-middle income countries have the highest mortality rates. In this article, we describe the landscape of disparities in access to surgical care for patients with breast cancer in the Philippines, a lower-middle income country in Southeast Asia. We describe the payment landscape that allows access to care for patients with non-metastatic disease, and draw attention to the fact that despite some degree of insurance for most Filipinos, great barriers to access remain in the form of a low number of surgical providers, geographic disparities, and persistent socioeconomic barriers.

Surgical scars cause an intra-atrial conduction delay and anatomical obstacles that facilitate the perpetuation of atrial flutter (AFL). This study aimed to investigate the outcome and predictor of recurrent atrial tachyarrhythmia after catheter ablation in patients with prior cardiac surgery for valvular heart disease (VHD) who presented with AFL. Seventy-two patients with prior cardiac surgery for VHD who underwent AFL ablation were included.
