January 2025

Division of Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Surveillance, National Center for Chronic and Non-communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing100050, China.

Population aging, high prevalence of chronic disease, such as hypertension and diabetes, low chronic disease control rate and chronic disease related risk factors commonly observed in population are serious public health problems faced by China today, which have resulting in severe challenges in the prevention and control of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in China. Although the prevalence rate of CKD showed decrease in the past decade, the awareness of CKD in population remains low. To facilitate early detection and treatment of CKD, it is necessary to strengthen health education or promotion and opportunistic screening in high-risk populations, and improve the accessibility of testing and diagnosis.

Electronic address:

Background: Skeletal fluorosis is a chronic metabolic bone disease caused by excessive accumulation of fluoride in the bones. Previous studies have found that when the intake of tea fluoride is similar, the prevalence of skeletal fluorosis varies greatly among different ethnic groups, which may be related to different genetic backgrounds. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of estrogen receptor 1 (ESR1) and collagen type 1 α1 (COL1A1) were strongly associated with bone metabolism as well as bone growth and development, but their association with the risk of skeletal fluorosis has not been reported.

Background: HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective but not widely used by men who have sex with men (MSM; 27%) in China.

Methods: In June 2023, an online cross-sectional survey with a discrete choice experiment (DCE) was distributed to PrEP-eligible MSM in China who were at least 18 years old. The DCE explored attributes of PrEP modality (daily pill, on-demand pill, injections, implants), clinical care model (same-day, 2-visit, telehealth prescription), medication pickup (clinic, community health center, pharmacy, MSM-focused community-based organization, home delivery), enhanced support (self-management, smartphone app, text reminder, anonymous peer support group), and cost.

Background: Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a climate-sensitive zoonotic disease that poses a significant public health burden worldwide. While previous studies have established associations between meteorological factors and HFRS incidence, there remains a critical knowledge gap regarding the heterogeneity of these effects across diverse epidemic regions. Addressing this gap is essential for developing region-specific prevention and control strategies.

Schistosomiasis, caused by the infection with Schistosoma japonicum, remains a significant public health concern in China. As the sole intermediate host of S. japonicum, the breeding and spread of Oncomelania hupensis contribute significantly to the potential risk of disease occurrence and transmission.

Human brucellosis is a re-emerging disease in Sichuan Province, China. In this study, bacteriology, conventional bio-typing, multi-locus sequence typing (MLST), and multiple locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) were applied to preliminarily characterize the strains in terms of genetic diversity and epidemiological links. A total of 101 Brucella strains were isolated from 16 cities (autonomous prefectures) from 2014 to 2021, and all of the strains were identified as Brucella melitensis bv.

A discrete choice experiment on Chinese parents' preferences of vaccine schedules against six childhood infectious diseases.

Vaccine X

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases, National Immunization Program, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing, China.

Background: China's Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) provides vaccinations against 12 vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) at no cost to families. For some VPDs, parents may opt to substitute equivalent non-program vaccines, including combination vaccines, for EPI vaccines; substitute vaccines must be paid for by the family. Although parents have several choices for vaccinating their children, their preferences for vaccines and immunization schedules have not been systematically evaluated.

Small mammals and associated infections in China: a systematic review and spatial modelling analysis.

Lancet Reg Health West Pac

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity, Academy of Military Medical Science, Beijing, PR China.

Background: As natural reservoirs of diverse pathogens, small mammals are considered a key interface for guarding public health due to their wide geographic distribution, high density and frequent interaction with humans.

Methods: All formally recorded natural occurrences of small mammals (Order: Rodentia, Eulipotyphla, Lagomorpha, and Scandentia) and their associated microbial infections in China were searched in the English and Chinese literature spanning from 1950 to 2021 and geolocated. Machine learning models were applied to determine ecological drivers for the distributions of 45 major small mammal species and two common rodent-borne diseases (RBDs), and model-predicted potential risk locations were mapped.

[Effectively preventing pneumococcal diseases in the elderly and the young].

Zhonghua Yi Xue Za Zhi

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Tracking and Forecasting for Infectious Diseases, National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing102206, China.

Pneumococcal disease (PD) caused by (Sp) is a global public health concern. Children younger than 5 years and elderly over 60 years, due to immature development of the immune system early in life or the gradual decline of immune function with age, are high-risk groups for pneumococcal infections, which makes the disease burden particularly serious and the situation of prevention and control grim. Vaccination is the most effective measure to prevent PD and reduce pneumococcal antimicrobial resistance.
