Vascular calcification severely disrupts cardiovascular hemodynamics, leading to high rates of morbidity and mortality. Despite their clinical impact, the development of effective treatments remains limited, underscoring an urgent need for efficient and reliable drug screening methods. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are known to play a central role in driving the calcification process, undergoing an osteogenic transition in response to pathological conditions.

January 2025

From the Department of Nuclear Medicine (PET-CT Center), National Cancer Center, National Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

We present a case of 37-year-old man with multiple masses in the abdominal and pelvic cavity who underwent 18F-AlF-NOTA-octreotide PET/CT. The masses demonstrated heterogeneously increased uptake on 18F-AlF-NOTA-octreotide PET/CT and were suggestive of neuroendocrine tumor. However, the histopathological examinations confirmed the masses to be peritoneal mesothelioma.

is a species whose sclerotia have been extensively employed in traditional Chinese medicine, which has diuretic, antitumor, anticancer, and immune system enhancement properties. However, prolonged asexual reproduction has resulted in significant homogenization and degeneration of seed sclerotia. In contrast, sexual reproduction has emerged as an effective strategy to address these challenges, with a distinct mating system serving as the foundation for the implementation of sexual breeding.

Today, cancer has become one of the leading global tragedies. It occurs when a small number of cells in the body mutate, causing some of them to evade the body's immune system and proliferate uncontrollably. Even more irritating is the fact that patients with cancers frequently relapse after conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, leading to additional suffering.

Background: Colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) is a malignancy with a high mortality rate and complex biological characteristics and heterogeneity, which poses challenges for clinical treatment. Anoikis is a type of programmed cell death that occurs when cells lose their attachment to the extracellular matrix (ECM), and it plays a crucial role in tumor metastasis. However, the specific biological link between anoikis and COAD, as well as its mechanisms in tumor progression, remains unclear, making it a potential new direction for therapeutic strategy research.

The early treatment of Osteonecrosis of Femoral Head (ONFH) remains a clinical challenge. Conventional Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell (BMSC) injection methods often result in unsatisfactory outcomes due to mechanical cell damage, low cell survival and retention rates, inadequate cell matrix accumulation, and poor intercellular interaction. In this study, we employed a novel cell carrier material termed "3D Microscaffold" to deliver BMSCs, addressing these issues and enhancing the therapeutic effects of cell therapy for ONFH.

bFGF-Chitosan "brain glue" promotes functional recovery after cortical ischemic stroke.

Bioact Mater

April 2025

Beijing Key Laboratory for Biomaterials and Neural Regeneration, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering, School of Biological Science and Medical Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing 100083, China.

The mammalian brain has an extremely limited ability to regenerate lost neurons and to recover function following ischemic stroke. A biomaterial strategy of slowly-releasing various regeneration-promoting factors to activate endogenous neurogenesis represents a safe and practical neuronal replacement therapy. In this study, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF)-Chitosan gel is injected into the stroke cavity.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting around 50 million people worldwide. Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) have emerged as a promising source for cellular therapy due to their ability to differentiate into multiple cell types and their paracrine effects. However, the direct injection of BMMSCs can lead to potential unpredictable impairments, prompting a renewed interest in their paracrine effects for AD treatment.
