Background: This study aimed to examine whether baseline atherosclerosis was associated with subsequent short-term domain-specific cognitive decline.

Methods And Results: This research was based on the BRAVE (Beijing Research on Aging and Vessel) study, a population-based prospective cohort study of adults aged 40 to 80 years, free of dementia. At baseline (wave 1, 2019), cognitive assessments and atherosclerosis measures, including carotid intima-media thickness, carotid plaques, coronary artery calcification, and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity were conducted.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is recognized as a potential predictor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), with a study involving 9944 Chinese patients revealing its association with increased cardiovascular event risk based on current risk stratification guidelines.
  • Patients were categorized into very-high-risk (VHR) and non-VHR subgroups, with Lp(a) plasma levels influencing the prevalence of cardiovascular events (CVEs) observed over an average follow-up of 38.5 months.
  • The results indicated that higher Lp(a) levels correlate with a significant increase in CVE risk, especially in the VHR subgroup, with adjusted hazard ratios showing a 2.18 times higher risk in the highest Lp

Article Synopsis
  • CBS is a therapy that modulates autonomic nervous system activity, showing potential in treating hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension by improving pulmonary hemodynamics and right ventricle function.
  • In a study with rats, CBS reduced pulmonary artery wall thickness and abnormal muscularization while also decreasing sympathetic nerve density, which helped restore balance in autonomic tone.
  • Key genes related to pulmonary hypertension were identified, indicating that altering their expression through CBS treatment could be crucial in managing this condition.

The MASS cohort comprises 2000 ICU patients with severe pneumonia, covering community-acquired pneumonia, hospital-acquired pneumonia, and ventilator-associated pneumonia, sourced from 19 hospitals across 10 cities in three provinces. A wide array of samples including bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, sputum, feces, and whole blood are longitudinally collected throughout patients' ICU stays. The cohort study seeks to uncover the dynamics of lung and gut microbiomes and their associations with severe pneumonia and host susceptibility, integrating deep metagenomics and transcriptomics with detailed clinical data.

Patient-centered care (PCC) is an innovative approach to the diagnosis and treatment of malignancy that aims to improve patients' experience during the management of their disease. However, despite growing interest, the concept and specifics of PCC remain unclear. This consensus document addresses this gap by providing a literature review and a clear definition of PCC and outlines its main components as observed in real-world practice.

This study examines the UK's May 2023 judgment in an international organ trafficking and organ tourism case. Human trafficking for organ removal is one of the least understood but growing forms of trafficking worldwide. Countries in the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas are often widely criticized by the international transplant community as sites for organ trafficking.

Spike-protein-based pseudotyped viruses were used to evaluate vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they cannot be used to evaluate the envelope (E), membrane (M), and nucleocapsid (N) proteins. The first generation of virus-like particle (VLP) pseudotyped viruses contains these four structural proteins, but their titers for wild-type severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are relatively low, even lower for the omicron variant, rendering them unsuitable for neutralizing antibody detection.

Department of Structural Heart Disease, Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Peking Union Medical College Beijing China.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed 103 patients and found that 32 developed persistent PH after shunt correction, identifying three key predictors: high mean pulmonary artery pressure, high total pulmonary resistance, and low oxygen saturation.
  • * A predictive model was created from their findings, achieving a strong statistical performance, which could help identify those at higher risk for persistent PH after surgical correction of these shunts.

The profile of antibodies against antigenic epitopes of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during neutralizing antibody (NAb) decay has not been clarified. Using a SARS-CoV-2 proteome microarray that contained viral antigenic peptides, we analyzed the characteristics of the humoral response in patients with coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) in a longitudinal study. A total of 89 patients were recruited, and 226 plasma samples were serially collected in 2020.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare, inherited, multisystem disorder characterized by hypophosphatemia that occurs secondary to renal phosphate wasting. Mutations in PHEX gene (located at Xp22.1) in XLH alter bone mineral metabolism, resulting in diverse skeletal, dental, and other extraskeletal abnormalities that become evident in early childhood and persist into adolescence and adult life.

  • A 35-year-old woman with recurrent pancreatitis was admitted to the hospital, where imaging showed ansa pancreatica and a major duodenal papilla adenoma.
  • During an endoscopic procedure, the adenoma was removed using a hybrid technique, while a pancreatic stent was placed to prevent further pancreatitis episodes.
  • This case is unique as it marks the first report linking a major papilla adenoma with ansa pancreatica, and the minimally invasive methods used successfully addressed the patient's condition without needing more invasive surgery.

Key Laboratory of Bioactive Substances and Resources Utilisation of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Institute of Medicinal Plant Development, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Peking Union Medical College Beijing China.

Sea buckthorn leaf tea, an emerging potential functional beverage product, has not yet had appropriate product standards and corresponding quality evaluation methods, and its poor taste directly affects the acceptance of the population, thus limiting its market consumption potential. In this study, two major packaging forms of sea buckthorn leaf tea available in the Chinese market were selected. The contents of total phenolics, total flavonoids, and 10 phenolic compounds, as well as the in vitro antioxidant capacity and sensory characteristics of sea buckthorn leaf tea were analyzed.
