Department of Endocrinology, Affiliated Hospital of Jinggangshan University, No.1,Quanshuiyan Road,Jizhou District, Ji'an City, 343000, Jiangxi Province, China.

Background: Previous studies have established a correlation between elevated levels of remnant cholesterol (RC) and the occurrence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) as well as insulin resistance (IR); however, the precise nature of these associations remains incompletely elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the relationships between RC and IR, as well as RC and T2D, and to determine the extent to which IR mediated the relationship between RC and T2D.

Methods: This was an observational study that utilized cross-sectional methods to examine the general population in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2020.

To examine the proportion and trends of cervical adenocarcinoma in cervical cancer (ICC), mainly including cervical adenocarcinoma (CADC) and squamous cervical cancer (SCC) in China, and to analyze the distribution of human papilloma virus (HPV) in CADC and SCC. Published studies reporting HPVs distribution in various histological types or relative proportions of CADC in ICC in China were identified manually and searched systematically in Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library databases, CNKI and Wanfang since the databases were established until October 2022. Meta-analysis was performed using Stata 16.

The clinicopathological and molecular features of primary high-grade neuroendocrine tumour in the breast.

Histopathology

December 2024

Department of Pathology, Molecular Pathology Research Center, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Aims: Nottingham grade for breast cancers, rather than gastro-entero-pancreatic (GEP) grade for neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), is currently applied to primary breast NETs, which need further clarification. High-grade NETs in breast also remain poorly recognised.

Methods And Results: Among 595 breast carcinomas with diffuse synaptophysin (Syn) or chromogranin A (CgA) immunostaining (≥ 90%), 197 eligible cases were selected, including 69 NETs, 123 invasive breast carcinomas of no special type (IBC-NSTs) and five neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs).

Circular RNAs in Viral Infection and Antiviral Treatment.

Cells

December 2024

Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College, Yunnan Key Laboratory of Vaccine Research and Development on Severe Infectious Disease, Kunming 650118, China.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of noncoding RNAs that lack the 5'-cap structure and the 3' poly(A) tail. Their distinguishing feature is that the 3' and 5' ends are covalently linked to form a closed circular structure. CircRNAs have a longer half-life and stronger ribonuclease resistance compared with linear RNA.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy, which increases the risk of other pregnant complications and adverse perinatal outcomes. Thyroid dysfunction is closely with the risk of diabetes mellitus. However, the relationship between euthyroid function in early pregnancy and GDM is still controversial.

Objective: To determine the epidemiological cut-off (ECOFF) values of etimicin against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii and Staphylococcus aureus.

Methods: We selected 1500 isolates from five hospitals throughout five cities in China spanning from January 2018 to December 2021 in the study. Minimal inhibit concentrations (MICs) of etimicin were determined using the broth microdilution method.

Background And Objective: Thyroidectomy, followed by postoperative thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression therapy, is the established therapeutic approach for low-risk differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC). Recently, there has been a growing body of research dedicated to postoperative TSH suppression therapy in low-risk DTC. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive literature review concerning the necessity of TSH suppression therapy in DTC after hemithyroidectomy.

Two Cases of Macroglobulinemia with Elevated Serum CA125: Case Reports and Literature Review.

Cancer Manag Res

December 2024

Department of Laboratory Medicine, State Key Laboratory of Complex Severe and Rare Diseases, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Science and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, People's Republic of China.

Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is a relatively rare hematological malignancy characterized by serum monoclonal IgM gammopathy and bone marrow infiltration of lymphoma cells (small B lymphocytes, plasmacytoid lymphocytes, or plasma cells). Elevated CA125 is most seen in ovarian cancer or some benign diseases such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometriosis. No cases of WM combined with elevated CA125 have been reported so far.

Fe-capsaicin nanozyme attenuates sepsis-induced acute lung injury by regulating the functions of macrophages.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

November 2024

Research Unit of Island Emergency Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (No. 2019RU013), Hainan Medical University, Haikou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • In sepsis, macrophages play a crucial role in acute lung injury (ALI), and previous research showed that Iron-capsaicin-based nanoparticles (Fe-CAP NPs) can reduce inflammation associated with ALI.
  • The study involved treating bone marrow-derived macrophages and mice with LPS and observing changes in inflammatory markers and cellular behavior, using various laboratory techniques.
  • Results indicated that Fe-CAP NPs decreased harmful macrophage activity (reflected by reduced CD86 and increased CD206 expression), lowered levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), and improved lung tissue health, suggesting their potential therapeutic benefits in sepsis-induced ALI.

Non-Cell-Autonomous Cardiomyocyte Regulation Complicates Gene Supplementation Therapy for -Associated Cardiac Defects in Mice.

JACC Basic Transl Sci

November 2024

School of Basic Medical Sciences, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, Department of Biomedical Informatics, Peking University Health Science Center, Beijing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Truncating mutations are significant contributors to cardiomyopathy, with different types of mutations presenting distinct cardiac issues in mouse models.
  • Germline mutations lead to defects in cardiac maturation, while cardiomyocyte-specific mutations cause pathological hypertrophy, but genetic mosaic mutations show no observable defects.
  • Treatment with adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors to restore lamin-A demonstrated that targeting non-cardiomyocyte cells is crucial for improving cardiac health associated with these mutations.

Article Synopsis
  • Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a serious condition affecting mothers that has unclear causes and varying recovery rates; genetic research may help understand it better.* -
  • A study screened six patients with severe PPCM and their families, finding that 66% had pathogenic genetic mutations, with a high rate of mutation shared among family members.* -
  • The research suggests that for women genetically predisposed to PPCM, pregnancy might worsen their condition, highlighting the importance of genetic counseling for those with family histories of heart disease.*

Background: Junior anaesthesiologists often find it difficult to gain the trust of surgeons, possibly because of their limited experience and unfamiliarity with surgeons. Therefore, they can face pressure when navigating disagreements with senior surgeons. We investigated whether and how differences in anaesthesiologist-surgeon seniority might impact patient safety.
