A deep understanding of the mechanical properties of weakly cemented sandstones in coal-bearing strata is crucial for ensuring the safety of coal mining operations. This study addresses this problem by investigating the deformation characteristics of such rocks through triaxial compression tests, and a novel piecewise constitutive model was developed, integrating the Double-strain Hoek model (TPHM) and statistical damage theory. The outcomes highlight several key findings: (1) The experiments revealed a distinct compaction stage in weakly cemented sandstone, which becomes shorter with an increase in confining pressure, highlighting a significant mechanical property of these rocks.

The increase of coal seam mining depth leads to the increase of ground temperature stress, which affects the fracture development and spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal samples. Taking anthracite as the research object, scanning electron microscopy, low-temperature N adsorption, temperature- programmed experiments and infrared spectroscopy tests were carried out to analyze the mechanism of the influence of pore structure and the number of oxygen-containing functional groups on the spontaneous combustion characteristics of coal samples from the physical and chemical perspectives. The results show that the connection between pores and fractures is enhanced and the scale of micro-fractures is also increased after the thermal and mechanical coupling.

The mechanical behavior and fracture mechanisms of deep fractured rocks under explosive dynamic loads are critical for understanding rock instability in engineering applications such as blasting operations. This study aims to investigate how the presence of pre-existing cracks and different stress states affect the mechanical properties and fracture patterns of rock-like specimens under dynamic loading conditions. We utilized a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) with an active confining pressure loading device to conduct impact compression tests on rock-like specimens containing pre-existing cracks.

Crystal structure similarity is useful for the chemical analysis of nowadays big materials databases and data mining new materials. Here we propose to use two-dimensional Wasserstein distance (earth mover's distance) to measure the compositional similarity between different compounds, based on the periodic table representation of compositions. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, 1586 Cu-S based compounds are taken from the inorganic crystal structure database (ICSD) to form a validation dataset.

The height of the water-conducting fracture zones (WCFZ) is crucial for ensuring safe coal mining beneath aquifers, particularly considering the secondary development of the WCFZ in upper seams due to repeated mining in close distance coal seams. Accurately predicting this height is essential for mine safety, groundwater protection, and optimal coal resource use. This study compiles extensive measured data from various mining areas in China to analyze the coupling relationship between the WCFZ development height and six influencing factors: mining thickness, mining depth, coal seam spacing, hard rock lithology ratio, and the slope length of working face.

Electronic address:

Polyethylene terephthalate microplastics (PET-MPs) have emerged as a significant environmental concern due to their persistence and potential health hazards. Their role in degenerative diseases, particularly intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), remains poorly understood, highlighting the need for systematic evaluation of their molecular toxicity. In this study, network toxicology and molecular docking approaches were applied to investigate the toxicological mechanisms of PET-MPs-induced IVDD.

Department of Geographical Sciences, University of Maryland, College Park, MD 20742, USA.

Mitigating methane (CH) emissions from China's coal mines as the largest contributor to anthropogenic CH emissions is vital for limiting global warming. However, the knowledge about CH mitigation potentials and economic costs of Chinese coal mines remain poorly understood, which hinders the formulation of tailored CH mitigation strategies. Here, we estimate and project China's provincial coal mine methane (CMM) emissions, mitigation potentials and costs under various coal production scenarios, by integrating the dynamic emission factors of CMM and key abatement technologies.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved remarkable success in various graph mining tasks by aggregating information from neighborhoods for representation learning. The success relies on the homophily assumption that nearby nodes exhibit similar behaviors, while it may be violated in many real-world graphs. Recently, heterophilous graph neural networks (HeterGNNs) have attracted increasing attention by modifying the neural message passing schema for heterophilous neighborhoods.
