With the escalating demand for exploration within confined spaces, bionic design methodologies have attracted considerable attention from researchers, primarily due to the intrinsic limitations of human access to hazardous environments. However, contemporary bionic robots primarily attain linear motion through the axial radial deformation of their body segments, thereby lacking the upright functionality that is characteristic of these organisms. In response to the limitations associated with current bionic earthworm robots concerning upright capability and stiffness modulation, we propose an innovative bionic robot that incorporates upright functionality and programmable stiffness.

Versatile nitrate-respiring heterotrophs are previously concealed contributors to sulfur cycle.

Nat Commun

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resource and Environment, School of Environment, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, 150090, PR China.

Heterotrophic denitrifiers play crucial roles in global carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, their inability to oxidize sulfide renders them vulnerable to this toxic molecule, which inhibits the key enzymatic reaction responsible for reducing nitrous oxide (NO), thereby raising greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we applied microcosm incubations, community-isotope-corrected DNA stable-isotope probing, and metagenomics to characterize a cohort of heterotrophic denitrifiers in estuarine sediments that thrive by coupling sulfur oxidation with denitrification through chemolithoheterotrophic metabolism.

The tiller angle, one of the critical factors that determine the rice plant type, is closely related to rice yield. An appropriate rice tiller angle can improve rice photosynthetic efficiency and increase yields. In this study, we identified a transcription factor, TILLRE ANGLE CONTROL 8 (TAC8), that is highly expressed in the rice tiller base and positively regulates the tiller angle by regulating cell length and endogenous auxin content; TAC8 encodes a TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/CYCLOIDEA/PCF transcriptional activator that is highly expressed in the nucleus.

Diverse Annulations of Alkyl(phenyl)phosphinic Chlorides and Imines.

Org Lett

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering, Department of Organic Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, People's Republic of China.

The reactivity of alkyl(aryl)phosphinic chlorides and imines was investigated in the presence of a base. The results indicated that allyl/benzyl(aryl)phosphinic chlorides gave rise to 1,2-azaphosphines (δ-phostims), while nonbenzylic alkyl(aryl)phosphinic chlorides produced the corresponding β-phosphinolactams (β-phostims) in their reaction with cyclic dibenzo[,][1,4]oxazepines, whereas steric electron-rich arylmethyl(aryl)phosphinic chlorides generated [2 + 2 + 2] annuloadducts in some cases. The current investigation provides useful insight into the reactivity of phosphinic chlorides and imines.
