Objective: Effective methods for establishing an aged animal model of diabetes and glycemic fluctuation have rarely been investigated. The aim of the study was to explore the feasibility of inducing glycemic fluctuation in aged Sprague-Dawley rats and to evaluate the corresponding changes in cognitive function.

Methods: Male rats aged 48 weeks were fed a high-fat and high-glucose diet and given streptozotocin intraperitoneally to establish a rat model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Background: Intrinsic capacity reflects an individual's functions and capacities across their lifetime. There are few studies on whether the level of intrinsic capacity can predict long-term mortality in Chinese populations.

Objective: To explore the effects of intrinsic capacity on long-term outcomes in older Chinese adults.

Artificial intelligence provides an opportunity to try to redefine disease subtypes based on similar pathobiology. Using a machine-learning algorithm (Subtype and Stage Inference) with cross-sectional MRI from 296 individuals with focal epilepsy originating from the temporal lobe (TLE) and 91 healthy controls, we show phenotypic heterogeneity in the pathophysiological progression of TLE. This study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trials Registry (number: ChiCTR2200062562).

Objective: To investigate the correlations of cognitive function with glycated albumin (GA), the ratio of GA to glycated hemoglobin (GA/HbA), and the concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Methods: A total of 44 elderly T2DM patients were evaluated for cognitive function using the mini-mental state examination (MMSE) and the Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA). Patients were then divided into two groups based on the MMSE and MoCA scores: a cognitive dysfunction group and a normal cognitive function group.

Sarcopenia is the age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength or physical function. It is most common in elderly individuals. Due to its high incidence, insidious onset, and extensive impact on the body, it has a huge impact on the family medical burden and the social public health expenditure in China.

Chinese expert consensus on prevention and control interventions for older adults with physical functional impairment (2022).

Aging Med (Milton)

March 2023

Center of Gerontology and Geriatrics, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine West China Hospital, Sichuan University Chengdu China.

Older adults are at high risk for functional impairment, which is closely related to sarcopenia, falls, and frailty. This seriously affects their quality of life and health, and places a heavy burden on society and families. Although domestic and foreign sports recommendations and prevention and control guidelines/expert consensus have been issued for healthy older adults and functional impairment-related diseases, there is no guidance on prevention and control interventions for older adults with physical functional impairment.

Article Synopsis
  • Malnutrition results from inadequate intake or use of energy and nutrients, affecting both physical and mental health, especially in the elderly, and leading to poor clinical outcomes.
  • It's a widespread issue among older adults, significantly straining medical resources and society due to various risk factors such as demographics, chronic diseases, and psychosocial issues.
  • The current recommendations for addressing malnutrition in China's elderly population are inconsistent, prompting efforts to develop standardized prevention and intervention strategies based on global evidence and local clinical experience.

Reliability and Validity of the Function Impairment Screening Tool in Chinese Older Adults.

Front Med (Lausanne)

October 2021

Department of Geriatrics, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Physical function gradually decreases with age in older adults, affecting their independence and quality of life and leaving them prone to adverse outcomes. Despite the importance of assessing function for older adults, most studies have focused on disability and paid less attention to functional impairment. Thus, given the lack of valid and practical methods for evaluating functional impairment for older adults, we developed the function impairment screening tool (FIST) using the Delphi method.

Department of Geriatrics, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine, Beijing 100053, China. Electronic address:

China has the largest number of individuals with dementia worldwide. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing global health issue that seriously threatens human health and quality of life and imposes a significant burden on families and society. To date, no treatment exists that can delay AD progression.

Hypertension is an important factor affecting the health of older adults. Antihypertensives can reduce stroke, cardiovascular events, and mortality in older hypertensive patients. Blood pressure management is difficult in older adults since geriatric syndromes such as frailty and comorbidities often coexist with hypertension.

Prevalence of Normal-Weight Obesity in Community-Dwelling Chinese Older Adults: Results from the Beijing Longitudinal Study of Aging.

Diabetes Metab Syndr Obes

May 2020

Department of Geriatrics, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine, Beijing 100053, People's Republic of China.

Objective: Normal-weight obesity (NWO) is characterized by high body fat percentage (BFP) in individuals with normal body mass index (BMI). This condition may increase the risk of serious health problems, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, insulin resistance, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. However, the prevalence of NWO in older adults in Beijing remains unclear.

Depression, Anxiety, and Apathy in Mild Cognitive Impairment: Current Perspectives.

Front Aging Neurosci

January 2020

Department of Geriatrics, Xuanwu Hospital, Capital Medical University, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine, Beijing, China.

: Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is an important risk state for dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD). Depression, anxiety, and apathy are commonly observed neuropsychiatric features in MCI, which have been linked to cognitive and functional decline in daily activities, as well as disease progression. Accordingly, the study's objective is to review the prevalence, neuropsychological characteristics, and conversion rates to dementia between MCI patients with and without depression, anxiety, and apathy.

Background: The present study identified whether glycemic variability (GV) was associated with vascular calcification and explored the underlying mechanisms.

Methods: Eighty-four consecutive type 2 diabetic patients with unstable angina (UA) were included from January 2018 to June 2018 to calculate calcification scores using computerized tomographic angiography (CTA), and the patients were divided into 2 groups: high calcification score group (HCS group) and low calcification score group (LCS group). Intergroup differences in GV were determined via comparisons of the standard deviation (SD) of blood glucose.

Background/objectives: Frailty in older adults predicts dependence and mortality and is a major challenge for healthcare systems in countries with rapidly aging populations. Little is known about frailty in China. We investigated the prevalence and associated risk factors of frailty in older adults in China.

The effect of depression on sleep quality and the circadian rhythm of ambulatory blood pressure in older patients with hypertension.

J Clin Neurosci

May 2017

Department of Geriatrics, Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University, China National Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Medicine, Beijing 100053, China. Electronic address:

Objective: To explore the effect of depression on the sleep quality, and the circadian rhythm of ambulatory blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension.

Methods: A total of 73 older patients with hypertension were screened for depression and divided into two groups. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the circadian rhythm of ambulatory blood pressure were compared between the non-depressed (control) and depressed (case) group.
