Incorporating phase change materials (PCM) into three-dimensional porous network structures could effectively address the leakage problem. In this study, by investigating the effects of different cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) contents on the mechanical and thermal properties of polyethylene glycol (PEG)/CNF/waterborne polyurethane (WPU) phase change foams, a series of leak-proof, lightweight, and stable PEG/CNF/WPU phase change foams were synthesized. Utilizing CNFs as porous support materials could effectively mitigate the leakage of PCMs.

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO) is a common photocatalyst for water remediation, yet its powder form renders difficult to disperse, recycle, and regenerate, limiting photodegradation efficiency. In this study, a lignocellulosic-templated BiVO photocatalyst was fabricated from BiVO precursor and lignocellulose using a simple vacuum impregnation (w/o heat treatment on wood template). Results showed that the modified template retained original hierarchical structure with an increased specific surface area and reduced hemicellulose content, leading to a promising template for uniform distribution of BiVO.

Article Synopsis
  • Water-soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has potential as an eco-friendly adhesive but struggles with water and mildew resistance in the wood industry.
  • Researchers synthesized a polyester-type PVA adhesive (CPVA) using PVA and citric acid, which improved its bonding performance, water resistance, and anti-mildew properties.
  • The CPVA adhesive met performance standards and showed good bonding with plywood and metals, making it a viable alternative for creating formaldehyde-free wood composites.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

October 2024

Key Laboratory of High Efficient Processing of Bamboo of Zhejiang Province, China National Bamboo Research Center, Hangzhou 310012, China.

The utilization of plant-based flow catalytic microreactors has been increasingly gaining traction in the fields of water treatment, energy generation, and biotechnological science due to their inherent channel structures, renewable properties, and environmentally friendly nature. The conventional outside-in strategy for synthesizing plant-based monolithic microreactors typically entails prolonged hydrothermal modification, extensive chemical usage, or energy-intensive equipment. The present study presents a universal inside-out strategy for the rapid synthesis of monolithic catalytic microreactors derived from plant materials.

Reckoning with the global environmental challenge of plastic pollution, particularly in terms of recycling and biodegradation of thermosetting plastics, sustainable alternatives are imperative. The rapidly growing and eco-friendly material bamboo has great potential as a sustainable resource; however, it lacks the inherent self-bonding and plasticity characteristics found in plastics. This study presents a feasible approach to enhance the plasticity of bamboo by selectively removing part of its lignin and disrupting the crystalline structure of cellulose.

Article Synopsis
  • Bamboo consists of two types of tissues: thick-walled fibrous tissue and thin-walled parenchymal tissue, affecting energy consumption during LCNF preparation.
  • Nine homogenization cycles are needed for fibrous tissue, while only six are required for parenchymal tissue, resulting in different average diameters (45.1 nm for fibrous and 36.2 nm for parenchymal).
  • The tensile strength of LCNF films is higher when made from parenchymal tissue (142.46 MPa) compared to fibrous tissue (122.82 MPa), and using a metal organic framework improved the films' UV protection and antibacterial properties.

Plants (Basel)

June 2024

China National Bamboo Research Center, Key Laboratory of State Forestry and Grassland Administration on Bamboo Forest Ecology and Resource Utilization, Hangzhou 310012, China.

The ramet system is a typical structural type in the life history of clonal plants. This massive structure is formed by many similar ramets connected by underground rhizomes, which are independent and mutually influential. Therefore, the ramet system is unique to bamboo forests, and its role in the construction, maintenance, and productivity of bamboo populations is irreplaceable.

Butterflies have the ability to learn to associate olfactory information with abundant food sources during foraging. How the co-occurrence of both food and food odours affects the learning behaviour of adults and whether butterflies perceive the odour of their surroundings and develop a preference for that odour during the pupal stage have rarely been tested. We examined the effect of experience with food odour components (α-pinene and ethyl acetate) during the pupal and adult stages on the foraging behaviour of the flower-visiting butterfly .

This study investigated the effects of different adhesives, phenol formaldehyde (PF) and melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), on the mechanical and fire properties of flame-retardant laminated bamboo lumber (LBL). The results demonstrated that the flame-retardant treatment using phosphorus-nitrogen-boron compounds endowed the LBL with excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties, even though the bending strength and bond shear strength were slightly reduced. The PF-glued LBL exhibited superior mechanical and shear properties to the MUF-glued ones, primarily due to its higher processing temperature and deeper adhesive penetration.
