Background: Probiotics can colonize both the human and animal bodies and consist of active microorganisms that are beneficial to health. The use of probiotics has been shown to alleviate certain neurological diseases and disturbances in gut microbiota resulting from chronic ethanol exposure. Research indicates that probiotics can influence the nervous system via the microbial-gut-brain axis, wherein extracellular vesicles secreted by the gut microbiota play a significant role in this process.

Background: Chronic ethanol exposure (CEE) is recognized as an important risk factor for depression, and the gut-brain axis has emerged as a key mechanism underlying chronic ethanol exposure-induced anxiety and depression-like behaviors. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are the key metabolites generated by gut microbiota from insoluble dietary fiber, exert protective roles on the central nervous system, including the reduction of neuroinflammation. However, the link between gut microbial disturbances caused by chronic ethanol exposure, production of SCFAs, and anxiety and depression-like behaviors remains unclear.

Prodrug nanoassemblies are emerging as a novel drug delivery system for chemotherapy, comprising four fundamental modules: a drug module, a modification module, a response module, and a surface functionalization module. Among these modules, surface functionalization is an essential process to enhance the biocompatibility and stability of the nanoassemblies. Here, we selected mitoxantrone (MTO) as the drug module and DSPE-PEG as surface functionalization module to develop MTO prodrug nanoassemblies.

Unlabelled: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small non-coding RNAs that exert their biological functions as negative regulators of gene expression. They are involved in the skin wound healing process with a dynamic expression pattern and can therefore potentially serve as biomarkers for skin wound age estimation. However, no reports have described any miRNAs as suitable reference genes (RGs) for miRNA quantification in wounded skin or samples with post-mortem changes.

Ketamine as a glutamate receptor antagonist has a rapid, potent, and long-lasting antidepressant effect, but its specific mechanism is still not fully understood. Depression is associated with elevated levels of glutamate and astrocyte loss in the brain; the exploration of the relationships between ketamine's antidepressant effect and astrocytes has drawn great attention. Astrocytes and aquaporin 4 (AQP4) are essential components of the glymphatic system, which is a brain-wide perivascular pathway to help transport nutrients to the parenchyma and remove metabolic wastes.

Forensic microbiology has been widely used in the diagnosis of causes and manner of death, identification of individuals, detection of crime locations, and estimation of postmortem interval. However, the traditional method, microbial culture, has low efficiency, high consumption, and a low degree of quantitative analysis. With the development of high-throughput sequencing technology, advanced bioinformatics, and fast-evolving artificial intelligence, numerous machine learning models, such as RF, SVM, ANN, DNN, regression, PLS, ANOSIM, and ANOVA, have been established with the advancement of the microbiome and metagenomic studies.

Postmortem interval (PMI) estimation has always been a major challenge in forensic science. Conventional methods for predicting PMI are based on postmortem phenomena, metabolite or biochemical changes, and insect succession. Because postmortem microbial succession follows a certain temporal regularity, the microbiome has been shown to be a potentially effective tool for PMI estimation in the last decade.
