Article Synopsis
  • - A new species, K.Tan & M.X.Ren, was discovered in a secluded valley near the Nujiang Gorge in Yunnan Province, China, and is detailed using both molecular and physical characteristics.
  • - This species stands out due to its unique features, including an oblanceolate lateral wing and a specific number of calyx glands, which differentiate it from similar endemic species.
  • - Molecular phylogenetic analyses confirm that this new species has distinct genetic boundaries from its closest relatives, solidifying its classification as a separate species.

Two new species of Sukatsheva, 1985, and , are described and illustrated from the latest Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China. Based on fossil specimens with wings, these new species are established and assigned to by a combination of three forewing characters: Sc with three branches ending at C, the four-branched Rs (R to R) originating distad of M (vs. three-branched RS (R undivided) in all other fossil and extant nannochoristids), and M forking with four branches; and a hind wing character of Sc simple and short, terminating at C well before the pterostigma.

A new orchid species, , is illustrated and described from Yunnan Province, China, based on morphological and molecular analyses. This plant is characterised by the ovoid-fusiform, slightly compressed pseudobulbs with 4 or 5 leaves with slightly crisped margins on their apical half, dorsal sepal heart-shaped, lip with a bituberculate basal callus and a thickened folded lateral lobe on each side, centrally with one cavity with slightly raised margins, the column with a single pair of broadly triangular, obtuse wings. Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian Inference analyses of combined nrITS and plastid DNA sequences place this species in section Cestichis.

Genetic delimitation of species from Hainan Island.

PhytoKeys

August 2020

Key Laboratory of Genetics and Germplasm Innovation of Tropical Special Forest Trees and Ornamental Plants (Hainan University), Ministry of Education, Haikou 570228, China Hainan University Haikou China.

Hainan Island harbours an extraordinary diversity of Gesneriaceae with 14 genera and 23 species, amongst which two species and one variety are recognised in the genus . These three taxa are all Hainan-endemics and show a complex geographical distribution pattern with considerable morphological intermixtures. In this study, we combined DNA (nuclear ITS sequences and cpDNAL-F and 1b) to evaluate genetic delimitation for 12 populations from the island, together with morphological similarity analysis using 16 morphological traits.

Biogeography and evolution of Asian Gesneriaceae based on updated taxonomy.

August 2020

Center for Terrestrial Biodiversity of the South China Sea, College of Ecology and Environment, Hainan University, Haikou 570228, China Hainan University Haikou China.

Based on an updated taxonomy of Gesneriaceae, the biogeography and evolution of the Asian Gesneriaceae are outlined and discussed. Most of the Asian Gesneriaceae belongs to Didymocarpoideae, except was recently moved into Gesnerioideae. Most basal taxa of the Asian Gesneriaceae are found in the Indian subcontinent and Indo-China Peninsula, suggesting Didymocarpoideae might originate in these regions.

Key Laboratory of Genetics and Germplasm Innovation of Tropical Special Forest Trees and Ornamental Plants, College of Ecology and Environment, Hainan University, Haikou 570228, China Hainan University Haikou China.

is an Asia-endemic genus of Malpighiaceae currently placed in the tetrapteroid clade, representing one of the seven inter-continent dispersions from New to Old World. A molecular phylogeny based on sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was recovered for the first time for the genus. Our results showed that the most recent common ancestor of probably originated in the South Indo-China Peninsula and diversified in this region.
