Article Synopsis
  • Inflammation may contribute to postoperative delirium (POD) in older patients, particularly those with hip fractures, prompting this study to explore the role of the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a risk factor for POD.
  • The study analyzed data from 1,242 hip fracture patients, finding that an NLR of 7.6 or higher significantly increased the risk of developing POD and extended its duration, alongside other factors like stroke and complications.
  • The findings suggest that NLR could serve as a valuable predictive marker for POD in elderly patients, providing new insights into managing their postoperative care.

Objective: To investigate the status and related factors of sterilizers in dental health-care settings in Yunnan Province, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for the health administrative department to formulate regional quality control programs and systems, proposing reasonable suggestions for optimizing the allocation of sterilizer resources in Yunnan's dental health-care settings, thereby improving resource utilization efficiency.

Methods: This cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2600 dental health-care settings in Yunnan Province in March 2020. Uni-variable linear regression, multi-variable linear regression, curve fitting and threshold effect analysis were used to understand the relationship between dental units and sterilizers.

The absence of an effective gripping force feedback mechanism in minimally invasive surgical robot systems impedes physicians' ability to accurately perceive the force between surgical instruments and human tissues during surgery, thereby increasing surgical risks. To address the challenge of integrating force sensors on minimally invasive surgical tools in existing systems, a clamping force prediction method based on mechanical clamp blade motion parameters is proposed. The interrelation between clamping force, displacement, compression speed, and the contact area of the clamp blade indenter was analyzed through compression experiments conducted on isolated pig kidney tissue.

Objectives: Droplets or aerosols loaded with SARS-CoV-2 can be released during breathing, coughing, or sneezing from COVID-19-infected persons. To investigate whether the most commonly applied air-cleaning device in dental clinics, the oral spray suction machine (OSSM), can provide protection to healthcare providers working in clinics against exposure to bioaerosols during dental treatment.

Method: In this study, we measured and characterized the temporal and spatial variations in bioaerosol concentration and deposition with and without the use of the OSSM using an experimental design in a dental clinic setting.

Over the past decades, the spread of multi-drug-resistant (MDR-KP) is becoming a new threat and new effective therapies against this pathogen are needed. Bacteriophage (phage) therapy is considered to be a promising alternative treatment for MDR-KP infections compared with antibacterial drug usage. Here, we reported a new phage BUCT541 which can lyse MDR-KP ST23.

Background: Understanding the acute kidney injury (AKI) microenvironment changes and the complex cellular interaction is essential to elucidate the mechanisms and develop new targeted therapies for AKI.

Methods: We employed unbiased single-cell RNA sequencing to systematically resolve the cellular atlas of kidney tissue samples from mice at 1, 2 and 3 days after ischemia-reperfusion AKI and healthy control. The single-cell transcriptome findings were validated using multiplex immunostaining, western blotting, and functional experiments.

Gm614 Protects Germinal Center B Cells From Death by Suppressing Caspase-1 Transcription in Lupus-Prone Mice.

Front Immunol

June 2021

Beijing Institute of Brain Disorders, Laboratory of Brain Disorders, Ministry of Science and Technology, Collaborative Innovation Center for Brain Disorders, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Only a few signaling pathways have been reported in germinal center (GC) B-cell proliferation and death. In this study, we showed that a novel uncharacterized Gm614 protein is highly expressed in GC B cells from lupus-prone mice. Critically, ablation of this GC B-cell-specific Gm614 promoted GC B-cell death and mitigation of autoimmune symptoms, whereas overexpression protected GC B cells from death and exacerbated autoimmune symptoms.

In this study, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) was loaded into a poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA)/wool keratin composite membrane by emulsion electrospinning to prepare a composite membrane with a core-shell structure for guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The physicochemical properties, drug release performance in vitro and cytotoxicity of the composite membrane were evaluated to select the optimum concentration of bFGF. The fibers in the six groups of composite membranes were uniform in thickness, had a smooth surface, and did not exhibit a string bead structure.

Thrombocytopenia is associated with life-threatening bleeding and is common in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Robust molecular prognostic biomarkers need to be developed to improve clinical decision making for patients with MDS with thrombocytopenia. Wilms tumor 1 (WT1) and preferentially expressed antigen in melanoma (PRAME) are promising immunogenic antigen candidates for immunotherapy, and their clinical effects on patients with MDS with thrombocytopenia are still not well understood.
