In the tumor microenvironment (TME), cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs) facilitate drug resistance and tumor metastasis. Therefore, more and more attention has been focused on the regulation of TME by preventing the cross-talk between tumor cells and CAFs in the treatment of breast cancer. In this study, we have combined the benefits of deep drug penetration, pH sensitivity, and tumor-targeting delivery to prepare chondroitin sulphate (CS)-based nanomicelles (BBR/CS-DOX) for the co-delivery of doxorubicin (DOX) and berberine (BBR).

Peptostreptococcus anaerobius plays an important role in the development of colorectal cancer, and previous studies by our group have demonstrated that Peptostreptococcus anaerobius promotes resistance to 5-Fu chemotherapy in animal models of colorectal cancer. In this study, the effects of Peptostreptococcus anaerobius on chemotherapy resistance in colorectal cancer and its possible mechanism of action were investigated from the clinical point of view. Patients were selected according to exclusion and inclusion criteria and divided into sensitive and chemotherapy groups (n = 20/group).

Article Synopsis
  • - Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are versatile stem cells that help with immune regulation, inflammation reduction, and tissue repair through direct contact and paracrine effects, mainly using extracellular vesicles (EVs) for communication.
  • - MSC-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) have shown promise in treating rheumatic diseases due to their low immune response, stability, and similar benefits as MSCs, making them a potential alternative to direct cell therapy.
  • - This review discusses the latest findings on the properties and roles of MSC-EVs in rheumatic conditions, offering insights into how they might provide new treatment strategies and enhance our understanding of the diseases’ mechanisms.

Department of Pediatric Intensive Care Medicine, Hainan Women and Children's Medical Center, Haikou, China. Electronic address:

Self-immolative prodrugs have gained significant attention as an innovative approach for targeted cancer therapy. These prodrugs are engineered to release the active anticancer agents in response to specific triggers within the tumor microenvironment, thereby improving therapeutic precision while reducing systemic toxicity. This review focuses on the molecular architecture and design principles of self-immolative prodrugs, emphasizing the role of stimuli-responsive linkers and activation mechanisms that enable controlled drug release.

September 2024

Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Clinical Research Center, Shandong Provincial Key Medical and Health Discipline of Endocrinology, Affiliated Hospital of Shandong Second Medical University, Weifang, 261031, China.

Background: Empagliflozin (EMPA) has demonstrated efficacy in providing cardiovascular benefits in metabolic diseases. However, the direct effect of EMPA on autophagy in obesity-related cardiac dysfunction remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to determine changes in cardiac autophagy during diet-induced obesity and clarify the exact mechanism by which EMPA regulates autophagic pathways.

Rationale: Fear memory, a fundamental symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), is improved by (2R, 6R)-hydroxynorketamine ((2R, 6R)-HNK) administration. However, the phase of fear memory in which the injected drug is the most effective at mitigating PTSD-like effects remains unknown.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the effects of (2 R, 6 R)-HNK administration during three phases [acquisition (AP), reconsolidation (RP), and extinction (EP)] on PTSD-like behaviors in single prolonged stress (SPS) and contextual fear conditioning (CFC) rat models.

As a thriving artificial material, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), boasting inherent structural designability and functional adaptability, and with compositions akin to biological macromolecules, have emerged as a rising star in the field of material science. However, the progression of COFs is significantly impeded by the arduous and intricate preparation procedures of novel building blocks, as well as the inefficient development process of new reactions. An efficient, uncomplicated, and versatile functionalization approach, which has the potential to not only facilitate customized preparation of COFs based on application demands but also enable precise performance control, has become a focal point of research.

The ubiquitin-specific protease 7 (USP7), as a member of deubiquitination enzymes, represents an attractive therapeutic target for various cancers, including prostate cancer and liver cancer. The change of the inhibitor stereocenter from the S to R stereochemistry (S-ALM → R-ALM34) markedly improved USP7 inhibitory activity. However, the molecular mechanism for the stereo-selectivity of enantiomeric inhibitors to USP7 is still unclear.

Background: The rapid increase in the number of patients with chronic diseases and depression, as well as the rapid spread of their effects, have led to these two health problems gradually developing into major public health issues in China and around the world. Currently, many individuals with chronic diseases are experiencing depressive symptoms one after another. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct research on how to prevent depression in this growing population of individuals with chronic diseases in a timely manner.

Background And Purpose: This study aims to examine the global, regional, and national burden of ischemic stroke from 1990 to 2021.

Method: We used data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 database to comprehensively assess ischemic stroke indicators globally, regionally, and in 204 countries, including incidence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), and Joinpoint regression analysis.

Results: In 2021, there were a total of 7,804,449 cases of ischemic stroke globally (95% uncertainty interval = 6,719,760-8,943,692), with an age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of 92.

Purpose: Ischemic stroke is a refractory disease wherein the reperfusion injury caused by sudden restoration of blood supply is the main cause of increased mortality and disability. However, current therapeutic strategies for the inflammatory response induced by cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury are unsatisfactory. This study aimed to develop a functional nanoparticle (MM/ANPs) comprising apelin-13 (APNs) encapsulated in macrophage membranes (MM) modified with distearoyl phosphatidylethanolamine-polyethylene glycol-RVG29 (DSPE-PEG-RVG29) to achieve targeted therapy against ischemic stroke.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how intestinal sweet taste receptors and glucose transporters influence glycemic control in rats with Type 2 diabetes after undergoing duodenal-jejunal bypass (DJB) surgery.
  • Researchers evaluated changes in gut peptide levels, glucose transporters, and sweet taste receptors in different parts of the intestines following surgery.
  • Results indicate that DJB surgery improved glucose tolerance and stimulated gut peptide secretion, but this effect was negated when sweet taste receptor activity was inhibited, suggesting a link between taste sensing and glucose regulation.

Background/aim: Tenofovir amibufenamide (TMF) employs innovative ProTide technology and a methylation strategy to enhance the lipid solubility and plasma stability of the amide bond, providing advantages over tenofovir alafenamide (TAF). Despite promising Phase III clinical trial results demonstrating its antiviral efficacy, real-world data on TMF remains scarce. This study evaluates the antiviral efficacy and safety of TMF compared to TAF as the initial treatment in patients with high viral loads of chronic hepatitis B (CHB).

Background: In the past, there has been a clear conclusion regarding the sole impact of serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) levels or type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) on the risk of death. However, the combined effect of sNfL levels and type 2 DM on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality is still uncertain.

Methods: This study was a prospective cohort study based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
