To investigate the prospective association of sleep duration with the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults in Suzhou. The study used the data of 53 269 participants aged 30-79 years recruited in the baseline survey from 2004 to 2008 and the follow-up until December 31, 2017 of China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) conducted in Wuzhong District, Suzhou. After excluding participants with airflow limitation, self-reported chronic bronchitis/emphysema/coronary heart disease history at the baseline survey and abnormal or incomplete data, a total of 45 336 participants were included in the final analysis.

In this paper, we propose a new type of nonlinear strict distance and similarity measures for intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFSs). Our proposed methods not only have good properties, but also improve the drawbacks proposed by Mahanta and Panda (Int J Intell Syst 36(2):615-627, 2021) in which, for example, their distance value of [Formula: see text] is always equal to the maximum value 1 for any intuitionistic fuzzy number [Formula: see text]. To resolve these problems in Mahanta and Panda (Int J Intell Syst 36(2):615-627, 2021), we establish a nonlinear parametric distance measure for IFSs and prove that it satisfies the axiomatic definition of strict intuitionistic fuzzy distances and preserves all advantages of distance measures.

To understand the incidence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the Suzhou cohort, and explore the risk factors for the development of COPD in Suzhou, and provide a scientific basis for COPD prevention. This study was based on the China Kadoorie Biobank project in Wuzhong District, Suzhou. After excluding individuals with airflow obstruction and self-reported chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or pulmonary heart disease at baseline, 45 484 individuals were finally included in the analysis.

After brain injury, infiltration and abnormal activation of neutrophils damages brain tissue and worsens inflammation, but the mediators that connect activated neutrophils with neuroinflammation have not yet been fully clarified. To identify regulators of neutrophil-mediated neuroinflammation after traumatic brain injury, a mouse model of traumatic brain injury was established by controlled cortical impact. At 7 days post-injury (sub-acute phase), genome-wide transcriptomic data showed that interleukin 17A-associated signaling pathways were markedly upregulated, suggesting that interleukin 17A may be involved in neuroinflammation.

Roles for adipose tissues in energy metabolism, health maintenance and disease onset have been established. Evidence indicates that white, brown and beige fats are quite different in terms of their cellular origin and biological characteristics. These differences are significant in targeting adipocytes to study the pathogenesis and prevention strategies of related diseases.

Proteomics is a powerful tool that can be used to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of diseases and identify new biomarkers. Therefore, it may also be helpful for understanding the detailed pathological mechanism of traumatic brain injury (TBI). In this study, we performed Tandem Mass Tag-based quantitative analysis of cortical proteome profiles in a mouse model of TBI.

Aim: Accurate severity grading of lumbar spine disease by magnetic resonance images (MRIs) plays an important role in selecting appropriate treatment for the disease. However, interpreting these complex MRIs is a repetitive and time-consuming workload for clinicians, especially radiologists. Here, we aim to develop a multi-task classification model based on artificial intelligence for automated grading of lumbar disc herniation (LDH), lumbar central canal stenosis (LCCS) and lumbar nerve roots compression (LNRC) at lumbar axial MRIs.

Historic medical texts in China focused on schematic representations of external pathologies for the most part, but Imperially Commissioned Golden Mirror of the Orthodox Lineage of Medicine (, Yuzuan yizong jinjian), published in 1742, stands out for its illustrations of disease states. This contribution explores depictions of smallpox and breast abscesses, as they appeared in The Golden Mirror.

The mudskipper Boleophthalmus pectinirostris inhabits intertidal mudflats, exhibiting semilunar reproductive rhythms. To investigate whether melanopsin is possibly involved in the synchronization of the semilunar spawning rhythm in the female mudskipper, we first cloned all four melanopsin subtypes (opn4m1, opn4m3, opn4x1, opn4x2) in B. pectinirostris.

Cranberry is a dietary supplement popularly used for the prophylaxis of urinary tract infection. Interestingly, cranberry-warfarin interactions in clinical reports have shown bidirectional outcomes. (±) Warfarin, a widely prescribed anticoagulant, but with a narrow therapeutic index, contains equal amounts of S- and R-warfarin, of which S-warfarin is more active.

Based on first-principles calculations, the spin-dependent electronic transport of nanoporous graphene nanoribbons is investigated. A three-terminal configuration is proposed, which can electronically control the spin polarization of transmission, instead of magnetic methods. By modulating the gate voltage, not only could the transmission be switched between completely spin up and spin down polarized states to realize a dual-spin filter, but also the spin polarization could be finely tuned between 100% and -100%.

We used fresh leaves of Sophora japonica L. variety 'Qingyun 1' (A0) and 10 superior clones of the same species (A1-A10) to explore leaf morphological characteristics and total particle retention per unit leaf area under natural and artificial simulated dust deposition treatments. Our objectives were to explore the relationship between the two methods and to assess particle size distribution, X-ray fluorescence (XRF) heavy metal content, and scanning electron and atomic force microscopy (SEM and AFM) characteristics of leaf surface microstructure.

Transfer RNA (tRNA)-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs) are a recently established family of regulatory small non-coding RNAs that modulate diverse biological processes. Growing evidence indicates that tsRNAs are involved in neurological disorders and play a role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disease. However, whether tsRNAs are involved in traumatic brain injury-induced secondary injury remains poorly understood.

Acetaminophen (APAP) poisoning is the most common cause of drug-induced acute liver injury (ALI). Our results showed that toll-like receptor 5 (TLR5) was abundantly expressed in hepatocytes and dramatically downregulated in the toxic mouse livers. Hence, we herein investigated the role of TLR5 signaling after APAP overdose.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a growing public health problem, is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, although its prevention measures and clinical cares are substantially improved. Increasing evidence shows that TBI may increase the risk of mood disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the complex relationship between TBI and AD remains elusive.

The heterogeneity of traumatic brain injury (TBI)-induced secondary injury has greatly hampered the development of effective treatments for TBI patients. Targeting common processes across species may be an innovative strategy to combat debilitating TBI. In the present study, a cross-species transcriptome comparison was performed for the first time to determine the fundamental processes of secondary brain injury in Sprague-Dawley rat and C57/BL6 mouse models of TBI, caused by acute controlled cortical impact.
