A novel Ru-catalyzed radical-triggered trifunctionalization of hexenenitriles is presented, employing a strategy of remote cyano group migration and -C(sp)-H functionalization. Through remote cyano migration, the alkenyl moiety undergoes difunctionalization to the formation of a benzylic radical intermediate. This intermediate facilitates -selective C-H bond addition relative to the C-Ru bond within the Ru(III) complex, ultimately enabling trifunctionalization.

Observations of Cherenkov-Like Radial Wake in Water Waves.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Ocean Observation‑Imaging Testbed of Zhejiang Province, Ocean College, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Cherenkov radiation (CR) is a fascinating phenomenon that occurs not only in electromagnetic (EM) waves but also in water waves. The V-shaped wake formed by a moving object on the water surface results from the constructive interference of water waves of different wavelengths, similar to CR. We designed and fabricated a one-dimensional (1D) water wave crystal to analogize the behavior of moving particles in water waves.

Aspartate Metabolism-Driven Gut Microbiota Dynamics and RIP-Dependent Mitochondrial Function Counteract Oxidative Stress.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Hunan Provincial Key Laboratory of Animal Intestinal Function and Regulation, Hunan international joint laboratory of Animal Intestinal Ecology and Health, Laboratory of Animal Nutrition and Human Health, College of Life Sciences, Hunan Normal University, Changsha, 410081, China.

Aspartate (Asp) metabolism-mediated antioxidant functions have important implications for neonatal growth and intestinal health; however, the antioxidant mechanisms through which Asp regulates the gut microbiota and influences RIP activation remain elusive. This study reports that chronic oxidative stress disrupts gut microbiota and metabolite balance and that such imbalance is intricately tied to the perturbation of Asp metabolism. Under normal conditions, in vivo and in vitro studies reveal that exogenous Asp improves intestinal health by regulating epithelial cell proliferation, nutrient uptake, and apoptosis.

Thalamic hemorrhage is a type of intracerebral hemorrhage with high disability and mortality rates. Because of its deep bleeding location, irregular shape of the hematoma, and compression of the third ventricle, it is not suitable for craniotomy. This paper reports a case of a 63-year-old male patient who sought medical attention for left-sided basal ganglia and thalamus hemorrhage that broke into the ventricles.

Optimal Neutron Spectrum Database for In-reactor Pu Production.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Science and Technology on Reactor System Design Technology Laboratory, Nuclear Power Institute of China, Chengdu, 610200, China.

Plutonium-238 (Pu) is a scarce heat-source radioisotope used in nuclear batteries, which is produced by in-reactor irradiation of Americium-241 (Am) or Neptunium-237 (Np). Optimizing the neutron spectrum can improve the production efficiency of Pu, but currently, it is still a lack of knowledge about the optimal neutron spectrum for Pu production. Genetic algorithms and burnup algorithms are combined to identify optimal neutron spectra for Pu production under various irradiation times and flux levels, and build an optimal neutron spectrum database, which answers the questions "What is the optimal neutron spectrum for Pu production?" and "What is the maximum efficiency for Pu production" once and for all.

Protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) play crucial roles in various cellular processes. Despite their significance, only a few PTMs have been extensively studied at the proteome level, primarily due to the scarcity of reliable, convenient, and low-cost sensing methods. Here, we present a straightforward and effective strategy for detecting PTMs on short peptides through host-guest interaction-assisted nanopore sensing.

Detection and Treatment with Peptide Power: A New Weapon Against Bacterial Biofilms.

ACS Biomater Sci Eng

January 2025

Xiangya School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Central South University, Changsha 410013, P. R. China.

Bacterial biofilms, complex microbial communities encased in a protective extracellular matrix, pose a significant threat to public health due to their inherent antibiotic resistance. This review explores the potential of peptides, particularly antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), as innovative tools to combat biofilm-related infections. AMPs, characterized by their potent antimicrobial activity and tissue permeability, offer a promising approach to overcome the challenges posed by biofilms.

Annu Rev Entomol

January 2025

Department of Entomology, China Agricultural University, Beijing, China; email:

Thanks to the fast development of sequencing techniques and bioinformatics tools, sequencing the genome of an insect species for specific research purposes has become an increasingly popular practice. Insect genomes not only provide sets of gene sequences but also represent a change in focus from reductionism to systemic biology in the field of entomology. Using insect genomes, researchers are able to identify and study the functions of all members of a gene family, pathway, or gene network associated with a trait of interest.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

City University of Hong Kong, Department of Physics and Materials Science, 83 Tat Chee Ave, Kowloon Tong, 999077, Hong Kong, HONG KONG.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are regarded as the potential alternative of lithium-ion batteries due to their ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh g-1). However, severe instability and safety problems caused by the dendrite growth and inevitable side reactions have hindered the commercialization of LMBs. To solve them, in this contribution, a design strategy of soluble lithiophilic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is proposed.
