Synthetic vascular grafts are promising conduits for small caliber arteries. However, due to restenosis caused by intimal hyperplasia, they cannot keep long patency in vivo. In this work, through single cell RNA sequencing, we found that thrombospondin-1 (THBS1) was highly expressed in the regenerated smooth muscle cells (SMCs) in electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) vascular grafts.

Aims: This study aimed to explore the role and underlying mechanisms of brain-derived exosomes in traumatic brain injury-induced acute lung injury (TBI-induced ALI), with a particular focus on the potential regulation of ferroptosis through miRNAs and Scd1.

Methods: To elucidate TBI-induced ALI, we used a TBI mouse model. Exosomes were isolated from the brains of these mice and characterized using TEM and NTA.

Background And Object: It is a challenging step to guide a nasobiliary catheter from the mouth to the nasal cavity in endoscopic nasobiliary drainage (ENBD), and new methods are always being explored to improve the procedure. We have developed a novel device which is composed of a dedicated adjustable snare and a tongue depressor-like handle, for completing oral-nasal conversion of the ENBD tube. In this study, we aim to assess the utility of our new technique in repositioning the ENBD catheter by comparing it with conventional guidewire technique.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease, and podocyte injury is one of the major contributors to DKD. As a crucial transcriptional factor that regulates cellular response to oxidative stress, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is an attractive therapeutic target for DKD. In this study, we evaluated the therapeutic potential of DDO-1039, a novel small-molecule Nrf2 activator developed with protein-protein interaction strategy, on podocyte injury in DKD.

Serum uric acid and prediabetes progression and regression: a retrospective cohort study.

Postgrad Med J

December 2024

Department of Endocrinology, Nanjing First Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, No. 68 Changle Road, Nanjing 210006, China.

Background: The impact of serum uric acid (SUA) levels on metabolic disorders, particularly concerning the development or reversal of prediabetes, is not well understood. While high uric acid is recognized for its association with metabolic disturbances, its specific influence on prediabetes progression and regression has been insufficiently explored. This study investigates how SUA levels correlate with the natural course of prediabetes, shedding light on its management.

Organic photovoltaic materials that can be processed via non-halogenated solvents are crucial for the large-area manufacturing of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, the limited available of electron acceptors with adequate solubility and favorable molecular packing presents a challenge in achieving efficient non-halogenated solvent-processed OSCs. Herein, inspired by the three-dimensional dimeric acceptor CH8-4, we employed a molecular isomerization strategy to synthesize its isomers, CH8-4A and CH8-4B, by tuning the position of fluorine (F) atom in the central unit.

The polycomb protein complex interacts with GATA-6/PPARα to inhibit α-MHC expression.

Dev Growth Differ

December 2024

Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, China.

Transcription factors collaborate with epigenetic regulatory factors to orchestrate cardiac differentiation for heart development, but the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. Here, we report that GATA-6 induces cardiac differentiation but peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) reverses GATA-6-induced cardiac differentiation, possibly because GATA-6/PPARα recruits the polycomb protein complex containing EZH2/Ring1b/BMI1 to the promoter of the cardiac-specific α-myosin heavy chain (α-MHC) gene and suppresses α-MHC expression, which ultimately inhibits cardiac differentiation. Furthermore, Ring1b ubiquitylates PPARα and GATA-6.

The Genetic Odyssey of Axolotl Regeneration: Insights and Innovations.

Int J Dev Biol

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Evolution & Marine Biodiversity (Ministry of Education) and Institute of Evolution and Marine Biodiversity, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, China.

The axolotl, a legendary creature with the potential to regenerate complex body parts, is positioned as a powerful model organism due to its extraordinary regenerative capabilities. Axolotl can undergo successful regeneration of multiple structures, providing us with the opportunity to understand the factors that exhibit altered activity between regenerative and non-regenerative animals. This comprehensive review will explore the mysteries of axolotl regeneration, from the initial cellular triggers to the intricate signaling cascades that guide this complex process.

Aim: There is a lack of consensus regarding the efficacy of thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) and erector spinae plane block (ESPB) for postoperative pain in randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The comparison of TPVB and ESPB was explored through a systematic review and meta-analysis (MA) of relevant RCTs.

Methods: A comprehensive search of relevant literature was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Embase, and MEDLINE, from 2019 to June 2024.

Aim: Intraoperative lung-protective ventilation strategies (LPVS) have been shown to improve lung oxygenation and prevent postoperative pulmonary problems in surgical patients. However, the application of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)-based LPVS in emergency traumatic brain injury (TBI) has not been thoroughly explored. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of drive pressure-guided individualized PEEP on perioperative pulmonary oxygenation, postoperative pulmonary complications, and recovery from neurological injury in patients with TBI.

Aim: With the advantage of preserving thyroid function while minimizing intervention-related morbidity, minimally invasive thermal ablation techniques such as microwave ablation (MWA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) have emerged as alternatives to traditional open surgery. This study compares the efficacy and safety of MWA and RFA with that of open surgery for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules by utilizing a propensity score matching study design to improve comparability.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients with benign thyroid nodules treated at the North China Electric Power University (Baoding) School Hospital between May 2020 and May 2023.
