Olfactory Dysfunction in Allergic Rhinitis.

Clin Rev Allergy Immunol

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Olfactory dysfunction (OD) can have serious consequences as it hinders individuals from detecting important warning signals like smoke, spoiled food, and gas leaks. This can significantly impact their nutritional status, eating satisfaction, and overall quality of life. Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a common disease that greatly affects the quality of life and can lead to a decrease, distortion, or complete loss of olfactory ability.

IL-6 Promotes Muscle Atrophy by Increasing Ubiquitin-Proteasome Degradation of Muscle Regeneration Factors After Cerebral Infarction in Rats.

Neuromolecular Med

January 2025

Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, The Affiliated Jiangning Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, No. 168 Gushan Road, Dongshan Street, Jiangning District, Nanjing, 211199, Jiangsu, China.

Muscle atrophy in pathological or diseased muscles arises from an imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation. Elevated levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) are a hallmark of ischemic stroke and have been associated with muscle atrophy in certain pathological contexts. However, the mechanisms by which IL-6 induces muscle atrophy in the context of stroke remain unclear.

Safety and clinical efficacy of modified tracer fixation technique in orthopedic robot-assisted percutaneous vertebroplasty for Kümmell's disease.

J Robot Surg

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedics, Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, 210028, Jiangsu, China.

The rising incidence of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCF) has increased the demand for precise treatments like robot-assisted percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP), especially for conditions like Kümmell's disease that require high surgical accuracy. However, the traditional tracer fixation method has certain limitations. This study aimed to compare the safety and clinical efficacy of a modified tracer fixation technique with the traditional fixation method in robot-assisted percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) for Kümmell's disease.

The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is rich in taurine, a conditionally essential amino acid functioning in anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-aging, osmoregulation, and neuromodulation. Breeding oyster varieties with enhanced taurine content is significant to meet people's demand for high-quality oysters. In the present study, polymorphisms in the oyster cysteamine dioxygenase (CgADO) gene that encodes the central enzyme of the cysteamine pathway for taurine synthesis were investigated, and their association with taurine content was assessed in the Changhai (CH) and Qinhuangdao (QHD) populations.

Ovarian cancer is a common malignant tumor in women, exhibiting a certain sensitivity to chemotherapy drugs like gemcitabine (GEM). This study, through the analysis of ovarian cancer single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data and transcriptome data post-GEM treatment, identifies the pivotal role of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α) in regulating the treatment process. The results reveal that HIF-1α modulates the expression of VEGF-B, thereby inhibiting the fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2)/FGFR1 signaling pathway and impacting tumor formation.

Dual efficacy of tocilizumab in managing PD-1 inhibitors-induced myocardial inflammatory injury and suppressing tumor growth with PD-1 inhibitors: a preclinical study.

Cancer Immunol Immunother

January 2025

Department of Oncology, The Second Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, 330006, Jiangxi Province, China.

The combined use of tocilizumab (TCZ) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in cancer treatment is gaining attention, but preclinical studies are lacking. Our study aims to investigate the synergistic anti-tumor effect of TCZ combined with ICIs and its role in treating immune-related adverse events (irAEs). The clinical significance of high interleukin-6 (IL-6) expression in tumor patients was analyzed from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.

A novel quantitative angiogenesis assay based on visualized vascular organoid.

Angiogenesis

January 2025

Department of Physiology and Pathophysiology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, State Key Laboratory of Vascular Homeostasis and Remodeling, Beijing Advanced Center of Cellular Homeostasis and Aging-Related Diseases, Clinical Stem Cell Research Center, Peking University Third Hospital, Peking University, Beijing, 100191, China.

Angiogenesis describes the sprouting of blood vessels from existing vasculatures and it plays a pivotal role in disease progress such as diabetes, age-related macular degeneration and cancer. However, the most widely used anti-angiogenic agents targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway still lacked of specificity and therapeutic efficacy. To establish a method suitable for high-throughput drug screening and faithfully recapitulate the feature of in vivo angiogenesis, we generated a PECAM1-mRuby3-secNluc; ACTA2-EGFP dual reporter human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC) line and utilizing the cell line to establish a visualized and quantifiable in vitro angiogenesis model with stem cell-derived vascular organoid.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a central nervous system degenerative disease with a stealthy onset and a progressive course characterized by memory loss, cognitive dysfunction, and abnormal psychological and behavioral symptoms. However, the pathogenesis of AD remains elusive. An increasing number of studies have shown that oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) and oligodendroglial lineage cells (OLGs), especially OPCs and mature oligodendrocytes (OLGs), which are derived from OPCs, play important roles in the pathogenesis of AD.
