Background: The perception of Subjective Visual Vertical (SVV) is crucial for postural orientation and significantly reflects an individual's postural control ability, relying on vestibular, visual, and somatic sensory inputs to assess the Earth's gravity line. The neural mechanisms and aging effects on SVV perception, however, remain unclear.

Objective: This study seeks to examine aging-related changes in SVV perception and uncover its neurological underpinnings through functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).

Dual-drug loaded chondroitin sulfate embolization beads enhance TACE therapy for HCC by integrating embolization, chemotherapy, and anti-angiogenesis.

Mater Today Bio

February 2025

State Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Biomaterials and Devices, School of Biological Sciences & Medical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing, 210009, China.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major public health threat due to its high incidence and mortality rates. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), the primary treatment for intermediate-to-advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), commonly utilizes embolic agents loaded with anthracycline-based cytotoxic drugs. Post-TACE, the hypoxic microenvironment in the tumor induced by embolization stimulates the formation of new blood vessels, potentially leading to revascularization and diminishing TACE's efficacy.

Introduction: While considerable research in language production has focused on incremental processing during conceptual and grammatical encoding, prosodic encoding remains less investigated. This study examines whether focus and accentuation processing in speech production follows linear or hierarchical incrementality.

Methods: We employed visual world eye-tracking to investigate how focus and accentuation are processed during sentence production.

Background: Currently, some novel rods with lower elastic modulus have the potential as alternatives to traditional titanium alloy rods in lumbar fusion. However, how the elastic modulus of the rod (rod-E) influences the biomechanical performance of lumbar interbody fusion remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the quantitative relationships between rod-E and the biomechanical performance of transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF).

Biliary duct injury, biliary atresia (BA), biliary tract tumors, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and other diseases are commonly encountered in clinical practice within the digestive system. To gain a better understanding of the pathogenesis and development of these diseases and explore more effective treatment methods, organoid technology has recently garnered significant attention. Organoids are three-dimensional structures derived from stem/progenitor cells that can faithfully mimic the intricate structure and physiological function of tissues or organs .

Nanodiamond-mediated delivery of microRNA-7 for the neuroprotection of dopaminergic neurons.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol

January 2025

Development and Regeneration Key Lab of Sichuan Province, Department of Histology and Embryology, Department of Pathology, Chengdu Medical College, Chengdu, China.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the gradual loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and the accumulation of α-synuclein aggregates known as Lewy bodies. MicroRNA-7 (miR-7) targets the gene , which encodes α-synuclein, reducing its expression and alleviating neuronal damage in PD. Regulating the post-transcriptional levels of α-synuclein through miR-7 effectively inhibits its production.

Introduction: Artificial vascular scaffolds can mimic the structure of natural blood vessels and replace the damaged vessels by implanting them at the injury site to perform the corresponding functions. Electrospinning technology can perfectly combine biological signals and topographical cues to synergistically induce directed cell migration and growth.

Methods: In this study, poly (caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers, PCL nanofibers uniformly coated with the extracellular matrix derived from endothelial cells (ECd), and bi-directional linear gradient ECd-coated PCL nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and electrospray techniques to evaluate their effects on the proliferation and migration of Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and rapid endothelialization.

Background: Microfracture drilling is a surgical technique that involves creating multiple perforations in areas of cartilage defects to recruit stem cells from the bone marrow, thereby promoting cartilage regeneration in the knee joint. Increasing the exposed bone marrow surface area (more holes in the same area) can enhance stem cell outflow. However, when the exposed area is large, it may affect the mechanical strength of the bone at the site of the cartilage defect.

Angiomatoid fibrous histiocytoma (AFH) is a rare soft tissue tumor with intermediate malignant potential, and it rarely metastasizes. We encountered a unique AFH case where, the tumor was discovered initially in unusual locations-the left lung and the left 4th rib. Combined histological features with FISH and NGS analysis, the diagnosis of AFH was supported, however, it is difficult to determine which of these two is the primary lesion.
