Background: Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a complication of reperfusion therapy following acute ischemic stroke (AIS). We aimed to develop and validate a model for predicting HT and its subtypes with poor prognosis-parenchymal hemorrhage (PH), including PH-1 (hematoma within infarcted tissue, occupying < 30%) and PH-2 (hematoma occupying ≥ 30% of the infarcted tissue)-in AIS patients following intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) based on noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) and clinical data.

Methods: In this six-center retrospective study, clinical and imaging data from 445 consecutive IVT-treated AIS patients were collected (01/2018-06/2023).

Background: No studies have evaluated the impact of the cement distribution as classified on the basis of the fracture bone marrow edema area (FBMEA) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the efficacy of percutaneous vertebral augmentation (PVA) for acute osteoporotic vertebral fractures.

Methods: The clinical data of patients with acute, painful, single-level thoracolumbar osteoporotic fractures were retrospectively analyzed. The bone cement distribution on the postoperative radiograph was divided into 4 types according to the distribution of the FBMEA on the preoperative MRI.

Background: Early knee effusion is a common phenomenon after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with potential clinical implications. Unlike traditional alloy knee prostheses, the polyetheretherketone (PEEK) knee system has radiographic transparency on magnetic resonance (MR) scans, which allows analysis of prosthetic knee effusion. We aimed to identify the distribution and volume of knee effusion after TKA with the PEEK prosthesis with use of MR imaging and to analyze whether dynamic changes in effusion were correlated with serum inflammatory marker changes and knee function recovery.

Density functional theory study of hydrogen and oxygen reactions on NiO(100) and Ce doped NiO(100).

J Mol Model

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Polyolefins and Catalysis, Shanghai, 200062, People's Republic of China.

Context: This study aims to reveal the reaction mechanisms of H and O on the NiO(100) and Ce-doped NiO(100) surfaces using the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the on-site Coulomb correction (DFT + U) method. It was found that H and O react favorably on the reduced surfaces of both materials. However, after the oxygen vacancy is filled, the activation energy for the reaction between H₂ and lattice oxygen increases.

Conflicts within the tsetse fly belt revealed a strong correlation between the dynamics of bovine trypanosomosis and the insurgency involving farmers and herders in Nigeria and parts of West Africa. This study examined the history, causes and influence of farmers-herdsmen conflicts on banditry, terrorism and food security as it relates to the epidemiology of African animal trypanosomosis (AAT). A combination of literature database searches, semi-structured questionnaires, and mathematical modeling was employed.

Increasing evidence suggests that carotenoids play an important role in visual and cognitive development during early life. This study aimed to depict the carotenoid profile in maternal/cord plasma and breast milk in three northern cities of China while investigating the association between dietary carotenoid intake and breast milk carotenoid levels. We enrolled 990 lactating mothers from three urban northern Chinese cities to collect breast milk (including colostrum, transitional milk, early mature milk, middle mature milk, and late mature milk).

State Key Laboratory of Rare Earth Resource Utilization, Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun 130022, China.

Methicillin-resistant (MRSA) is a refractory pneumonia-causing pathogen due to the antibiotic resistance and the characteristics of persisting inside its host cell. Lysostaphin is a typical bacteriolytic enzyme for degrading bacterial cell walls via hydrolysis of pentaglycine cross-links, showing potential to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria. However, there are still grand challenges for native lysostaphin because of its poor shelf stability and limited bioavailability.

Chongqing Research Center for Pharmaceutical Engineering, College of Pharmacy, Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing 400016, China.

A novel palladium-catalyzed allylic C-H alkylation of terminal olefins with 3-carboxamide oxindoles is described. A variety of new 3-carboxamide-3-allylation oxindoles with an all-carbon quaternary center were obtained in moderate to good yields (up to 99%). In addition, the asymmetric version of this reaction was also explored, providing moderate enantioselectivity.

To measure the electroacoustic parameters of transducers in the continuous sound field in a limited water area, a reciprocity calibration method of hydrophones using a spatial sampling average method in a non-anechoic tank was developed. The sound propagation in the non-anechoic tank under the impedance boundary condition, with a sound source producing continuous sound, is introduced based on the Helmholtz equation and Green's function. The reciprocity constant is given using the spatial sampling average sound pressure, and the three-transducer reciprocity calibration procedure was established.

A low-frequency broadband ring transducer driven by the flextensional structure.

J Acoust Soc Am

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Underwater Acoustic Technology, Harbin Engineering University, Harbin 150001, China.

The flextensional transducer (FT) is a typical low-frequency transmitting transducer that is capable of high-power operation due to its capacity for displacement amplification. This article uses the structural configuration of the class IV FT as the basis for designing a ring transducer, which is a circular structure comprising a multitude of class IV flextensional structures as well as circular acoustic radiation structures. The flextensional structure drives the circular acoustic radiation structure, which in turn generates sound waves at low frequencies.

Leading-edge serrations inspired by owls exhibit the capability to control airfoil-turbulence interaction noise, but the design principle of the serration shape is still an open issue. To this end, we designed five types of serration shapes with different combinations of curvature, namely, triangular, ogee, anti-ogee, feather-like, and anti-feather-like. These curves are applied to serrated modifications with different bluntness levels (sharp or blunt) and amplitudes (0.

As an effective method to enhance the dielectric performance of polyolefin materials, polar side group modification has been extensively applied in the insulation and energy storage materials of electrical and electronic systems. In this work, two side groups with different topological structures were adopted, namely, vinyl acetate (VAc, aliphatic chain) and -vinyl-pyrrolidone (NVP, saturated ring), to modify polypropylene (PP) chemical grafting, and the effects of structural topology of the polar side group on the microscopic and macroscopic characteristics of PP, particularly on its electrical anti-breakdown ability, were investigated. Experimental results showed that the side group structural topology directly affected the crystallization and thermal properties of PP.

Podocytes are essential to maintain the normal filtration function of glomerular basement membrane, which could be injured by ischemia-reperfusion. As complicated function of autophagy in terminal differentiated podocytes, autophagy dysfunction might contribute to I/R induced renal dysfunction following glomerular filtration membrane (GFM) injuries. Meanwhile, apelin-13, an endogenous polypeptide, has been proved to be effective in regulating autophagy and apoptosis in podocytes.
