The lack of a robust system to reproducibly propagate HRV-C, a family of viruses refractory to cultivation in standard cell lines, has substantially hindered our understanding of this common respiratory pathogen. We sought to develop an organoid-based system to reproducibly propagate HRV-C, and characterize virus-host interaction using respiratory organoids. We demonstrate that airway organoids sustain serial virus passage with the aid of CYT387-mediated immunosuppression, whereas nasal organoids that more closely simulate the upper airway achieve this without any intervention.

Owning to the versatile nature in participation of Diels-Alder (D-A) reactions, the development of efficient approaches to generate active ortho-quinodimethanes (o-QDMs) has gained much attention. However, a catalytic method involving coupling of two readily accessible components to construct o-QDMs is lacking. Herein, we describe a palladium carbene migratory insertion enabled dearomative C(sp)-H activation to form active o-QDM species through the cross-coupling of N-tosylhydrazones with aryl halides.

Due to its "ferroionic" nature, CuInPS combines switchable ferroelectric polarization with highly mobile Cu ions, allowing for multiple resistance states. Its conductive mechanism involves ferroelectric switching, ion migration, and corresponding intercoupling, which are highly sensitive to external electric field. Distinguishing the dominant contribution of either ferroelectric switching or ion migration to dynamic conductivity remains a challenge and the conductive mechanism is not clear yet.

Irrespective of the specific see-through device, obtaining optimal transparency remains the primary goal. In this work, we introduce a general strategy to enhance the transparency of various see-through devices. We achieve this by structuring the colored functional materials into imperceptible three-dimensional mesh lines, addressing a common challenge in multi-layer structures where each layer causes a reduction in transparency due to their color or opacity.

The hybrid skin-topological effect (HSTE) has recently been proposed as a mechanism where topological edge states collapse into corner states under the influence of the non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). However, directly observing this effect is challenging due to the complex frequencies of eigenmodes. In this study, we experimentally observe HSTE corner states using synthetic complex frequency excitations in a transmission line network.

Large-amount encapsulation and subsequent expressing are common characteristics for many biomedical applications, such as cosmetic creams and medical ointments. Emulsion gels can accomplish that, but often undergo exclusive, complex, multiple synthesis steps, showing extremely laborious and non-universal. The method here is simple via precisely interfacial engineering in homogenizing a nanoparticle aqueous dispersion and a polymer oil solution, gaining interfacial 45° three-phase-contact-angle for the nanoparticle that can bridge across oil emulsions' interfaces and ultimately form interconnected macroscopic networks.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, combining remarkable electrical properties and mechanical flexibility, offer fascinating opportunities for flexible integrated circuits (ICs). Despite notable progress, so far the showcased 2D flexible ICs have been constrained to basic logic gates and ring oscillators with a maximum integration scale of a few thin film transistors (TFTs), creating a significant disparity in terms of circuit scale and functionality. Here, we demonstrate medium-scale flexible ICs integrating both combinational and sequential elements based on 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS).

The emergence of single-atom catalysts offers exciting prospects for the green production of hydrogen peroxide; however, their optimal local structure and the underlying structure-activity relationships remain unclear. Here we show trace Fe, up to 278 mg/kg and derived from microbial protein, serve as precursors to synthesize a variety of Fe single-atom catalysts containing FeNO (1 ≤ x ≤ 4) moieties through controlled pyrolysis. These moieties resemble the structural features of nonheme Fe-dependent enzymes while being effectively confined on a microbe-derived, electrically conductive carbon support, enabling high-current density electrolysis.

Natural enzymes feature distinctive second spheres near their active sites, leading to exquisite catalytic reactivity. However, incumbent synthetic strategies offer limited versatility in functionalizing the second spheres of heterogeneous catalysts. Here, we prepare an enzyme-mimetic single Co-N atom catalyst with an elaborately configured pendant amine group in the second sphere via 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition, which switches the oxygen reduction reaction selectivity from the 4e to the 2e pathway under acidic conditions.

Colloidal properties of nanoparticles are intricately linked to their morphology. Traditionally, achieving high-concentration dispersions of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets has proven challenging as they tend to agglomerate or re-stack under increased surface contact and Van der Waals attraction. Here, we unveil an excluded volume effect enabled by 2D morphology, which can be coupled with electrostatic repulsion to synthesize high-concentration aqueous graphene dispersions.

Carbon nanomaterials show outstanding promise as electrocatalysts for hydrogen peroxide (HO) synthesis via the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction. However, carbon-based electrocatalysts that are capable of generating HO at industrial-level current densities (>300 mA cm) with high selectivity and long-term stability remain to be discovered. Herein, few-layer boron nanosheets are in-situ introduced into a porous carbon matrix, creating a metal-free electrocatalyst (B-C) with HO production rates of industrial relevance in neutral or alkaline media.

Metal halide perovskites show promise for next-generation light-emitting diodes, particularly in the near-infrared range, where they outperform organic and quantum-dot counterparts. However, they still fall short of costly III-V semiconductor devices, which achieve external quantum efficiencies above 30% with high brightness. Among several factors, controlling grain growth and nanoscale morphology is crucial for further enhancing device performance.

Although acute myeloid leukemia (AML) affects hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)-supportive microenvironment, it is largely unknown whether leukemia-modified bone marrow (BM) microenvironment can be remodeled to support normal hematopoiesis after complete remission (CR). As a key element of BM microenvironment, endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) provide a feasible way to investigate BM microenvironment remodeling. Here, we find reduced and dysfunctional BM EPCs in AML patients, characterized by impaired angiogenesis and high ROS levels, could be partially remodeled after CR and improved by N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC).
