Scorpion is a commonly used drug in traditional Chinese medicine for treating epilepsy, although the exact mechanisms are not yet fully understood. This study aimed to compare the treatment effects of Scorpion water extract (SWE) and Scorpion ethanol extract (SEE) on mice with pentetrazole-induced epilepsy and investigate the possible mechanisms through metabolomics methods. A pentetrazole-induced epileptic mice model was used to assess the corrective effects of SWE and SEE.

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a very rare malignant tumor. This study aimed to provide more evidence about the natural history and clinical features of ESOS, and clarify the impact of chemotherapy (CT) and radiotherapy (RT) on patient survival and postoperative recurrence for the sake of gaining a better understanding about the disease. Patient/tumor characteristics, recurrence, treatment, and follow-up durations were collected by searching studies in PubMed, Web of Science, Ovid, Elsevier, SpringerLink, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and WAN FANG Data before June 30, 2023.

The mechanism by which DNA-damage affects self-renewal and pluripotency remains unclear. DNA damage and repair mechanisms have been largely elucidated in mutated cancer cells or simple eukaryotes, making valid interpretations on early development difficult. Here we show the impact of ionizing irradiation on the maintenance and early differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs).

In trenchless pipe jacking engineering practice, the formation of high-quality slurry jacket on the outer wall of pipe section is the key to effectively reducing the pipe-soil frictional resistance, improving the construction efficiency, reducing the construction risk and ensuring the construction safety. Herein, the multifunctional experimental apparatus for the pipe-soil frictional resistance testing is improved to ensure the smooth implementation of the subsequent experimental research. The influences of the structural parameters of grouting holes in circular and rectangular pipe sections on the pipe-soil frictional resistance and the states of slurry jackets around the various pipe sections are investigated respectively based on orthogonal experiment.

In order to solve the problems of rutting and early fatigue cracks in emulsified asphalt cold recycled pavement, and the shortage of natural stone resources and new environmental hazards caused by the use of traditional limestone powder filler. In this study, coal gangue powder was added to prepare Emulsified Asphalt Mastic (EAM) to improve the rheological properties and fatigue performance. A series of tests, including frequency scanning, temperature scanning, Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR), Linear Amplitude Scanning (LAS), and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were conducted.

Uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC) is a significant cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. Prior research has demonstrated an association between cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2Â A (CDKN2A) and various tumors. As a member of the INK4 family, CDKN2A is involved in cell cycle regulation by controlling CDKs.

Previous studies reported that depressive symptoms were associated with a high risk of all-cause mortality. However, the effect of different long-term depressive symptom trajectory patterns on the risk of all-cause mortality has not been evaluated. Our research aimed to explore the association between different depressive symptom trajectories and the risk of all-cause mortality in Chinese adults.

Transition-metal carbides have been advocated as the promising alternatives to noble-metal platinum-based catalysts in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction over half a century. However, the effectiveness of transition-metal carbides catalyzing hydrogen evolution in high-pH electrolyte is severely compromised due to the lowered proton activity and intractable alkaline-leaching issue of transition-metal centers. Herein, on the basis of validation of molybdenum-carbide model-catalyst system by taking advantage of surface science techniques, MoC micro-size spheres terminated by Al doped MoO layer exhibit a notable performance of alkaline hydrogen evolution with a near-zero onset-potential, a low overpotential (40 mV) at a typical current density of 10 mA/cm, and a small Tafel slope (45 mV/dec), as well as a long-term stability for continuous hydrogen production over 200 h.

Radiation therapy is a common treatment modality for lung cancer, and resistance to radiation can significantly affect treatment outcomes. We recently described that lung cancer cells that express more germ cell cancer genes (GC genes, genes that are usually restricted to the germ line) can repair DNA double-strand breaks more rapidly, show higher rates of proliferation and are more resistant to ionizing radiation than cells that express fewer GC genes. The gene encoding TRIP13 appeared to play a large role in this malignant phenotype.

Novel anthropometric indices are more closely related to metabolic abnormalities than traditional anthropometric indices. Fewer studies have been conducted based on the relationship between novel anthropometric indicators and hyperuricemia. This study was to analyze the serum uric acid (SUA) levels of adults and the relationship between hyperuricemia and these new indicators in Su-Wuxi-Chang area of China, in order to provide a theoretical basis for the management of SUA levels in patients with hyperuricemia.

Niemann-Pick disease type C protein 1 (NPC1), classically associated with cholesterol transport and viral entry, has an emerging role in cancer biology. Here, we demonstrate that knockout of Npc1 in hepatocytes attenuates hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression in both DEN (diethylnitrosamine)-CCl induced and MYC-driven HCC mouse models. Mechanistically, NPC1 significantly promotes HCC progression by modulating the TGF-β pathway, independent of its traditional role in cholesterol transport.

The black-winged kite algorithm (BKA) constructed on the black-winged kites' migratory and predatory instincts is a revolutionary swarm intelligence method that integrates the Leader tactic with the Cauchy variation procedure to retrieve the expansive appropriate convergence solution. The essential BKA exhibits marginalized resolution efficiency, inferior assessment precision, and stagnant sensitive anticipation. To foster aggregate discovery intensity and advance widespread computational efficacy, an innovative complex-valued encoding BKA (CBKA) is presented to resolve the global optimization.

The impacts of climate change on human health are often underestimated or perceived to be in a distant future. Here, we present the projected impacts of climate change in the context of COVID-19, a recent human health catastrophe. We compared projected heat mortality with COVID-19 deaths in 38 cities worldwide and found that in half of these cities, heat-related deaths could exceed annual COVID-19 deaths in less than ten years (at + 3.

The laminae of varying lithologies are characteristic of shale oil reservoirs, with their pronounced heterogeneity and fluid-solid coupling significantly impacting oil productivity. To this end, this study initially quantified the permeability and mechanical heterogeneity in lamina-developed shale through permeability tests and quasi triaxial mechanical experiments on shale cores from different orientations in the Jiyang Depression. These tests revealed marked brittleness in horizontally oriented cores and elasticity in vertically oriented cores.

Targeting of diseased cells is one of the most urgently needed prerequisites for a next generation of potent pharmaceuticals. Different approaches pursued fail mainly due to a lack of specific surface markers. Developing an RNA-based methodology, we can now ensure precise cell targeting combined with selective expression of effector proteins for therapy, diagnostics or cell steering.
