In this study, composite films were developed by encapsulating cassia oil (CO) with β-cyclodextrin through a microencapsulation technique and incorporating it into a chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycerol matrix. The primary objective of the film was to inhibit bacterial growth on the surface of fresh bananas and extend their shelf life. Characterization methods were employed to evaluate the physical properties and functionality of the composite films.

Fucoidan, a water-soluble polysaccharide derived from marine organisms, has garnered significant attention for its ability to regulate gut microbiota and its anti-tumor properties. However, the existence of a correlation between the anti-tumor effect of fucoidan and its regulation of the gut microbiota remains unknown. In pursuit of this objective, we culled the gut microbiota of mice with broad-spectrum antibiotics to generate pseudo-sterile tumor-bearing mice.

The healing of bacteria-infected wounds has long posed a significant clinical challenge. Traditional hydrogel wound dressings often lack self-healing properties and effective antibacterial characteristics, making wound healing difficult. In this study, a bioactive small molecule cross-linking agent 4-FPBA/Lys/4-FPBA (FLF) composed of 4-formylphenylboronic acid (4-FPBA) and lysine (Lys) was utilized to cross-link guar gum (GG) and a tannic acid/iron (TA/Fe) chelate through multiple dynamic bonds, leading to the formation of a novel self-healing hydrogel dressing GG-FLF/TA/Fe.

This study was designed to evaluate the combined antimicrobial activity of selected phage cocktail (MS2+T7 phages) and essential oils (cinnamon, clove, oregano, and thymol) against Escherichia coli ATCC 15597. To select most effective phages, the lytic abilities of individual phages (MS2, phiX174, and T7) and their phage combinations were assessed using the phage spot test and plaque assay at various multiplicity of infections (MOIs) ranging from 0.01 to 100.

Pigeon adenovirus type 1 predominantly infects pigeons under 12 months of age (mainly 3-5 months old), causing major clinical symptoms such as vomiting, dehydration, and discharge of thin yellow feces. In February 2023, an outbreak of a pathogen with symptoms similar to pigeon adenovirus infections occurred on a pigeon farm in Shandong Province, which was eventually identified as pigeon adenovirus type 1. In this study, a strain of PiAdV-1 was isolated from naturally infected pigeons and named pigeon-adenovirus-1-isolate-CH-SD-2023, and the hexon gene sequence as amplified and analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Acute lung injury (ALI)/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) represents a spectrum of potentially fatal conditions that currently lack effective drug treatment. Recent researches suggest that Fibroblast Growth Factor 21 (FGF21) may protect against ALI/ARDS. However, the clinical use of FGF21 is limited by its rapid degradation, restricted targeting capabilities, and numerous adverse effects.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant global health challenge, marked by varying incidence and mortality rates across different regions. The pathogenesis of CRC involves multiple stages, including initiation, promotion, progression, and metastasis, influenced by genetic and epigenetic factors. The chaperone protein glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78), crucial in regulating the unfolded protein response (UPR) during endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, plays a pivotal role in CRC pathogenesis.

Tyramine, β-phenylethylamine, octopamine and other trace amines are endogenous substances recently recognized as important novel neurotransmitters in the brain. Trace amines act via multiple selective trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs) of the G protein-coupled receptor family. TAARs are expressed in various brain regions and modulate neurotransmission, neuronal excitability, adult neurogenesis, cognition, mood, locomotor activity and olfaction.

Gastric cancer (GC) remains a significant global health challenge, particularly due to the resistance of gastric cancer stem cells (GCSCs) to chemotherapy. This study investigates the role of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A2/B1 (HNRNPA2B1), a member of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs), in modulating mitochondrial metabolic reprogramming and contributing to chemoresistance in GCSCs. Through extensive analysis of tumor cancer genome atlas (TCGA) and gene expression omnibus (GEO) datasets, HNRNPA2B1 was identified as a key regulator in GCSCs, correlating with poor prognosis and enhanced resistance to chemoresistance.

Objectives: In this study, artificial intelligence techniques were used to achieve automated diagnosis and classification of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degenerative joint disease (DJD) on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.
Methods: An AI model utilizing the YOLOv10 algorithm was trained, validated and tested on 7357 annotated and corrected oblique sagittal TMJ images (3010 images of normal condyles and 4347 images of condyles with DJD) from 1018 patients who visited Peking University School and Hospital of Stomatology for temporomandibular disorders and underwent TMJ CBCT examinations. This model could identify DJD as well as the radiographic signs of DJD, namely, erosion, osteophytes, sclerosis and subchondral cysts.

Due to the difference of estrogen levels in different phases of estrous cycle, it is necessary to exclude the influence of endogenous estrogen when studying the cardiovascular effects of estrogen and its analogues. In this study, the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury of isolated heart were investigated in female rats during different phases of estrous cycle with male rats as comparison. The results indicated that the estrogen content in blood of rats during metestrus and diestrus (MD) was lower than those during proestrus and estrous (PE).

IL-21 is a type I cytokine that is produced by activated CD4 T cells and has a significant impact on the growth, survival, and functional activation of B lymphocytes. While IL-21 has been identified in several teleost fish species, its function and associated mechanisms focus on teleost fish B cells remain largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of IL-21 (OnIL-21) on IgM B cells from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), as well as the intracellular signaling transduction pathway involved.

Macrophages play crucial roles in regulating both homeostatic and inflammatory responses, with classical activated (M1) and alternatively activated (M2) subsets defined by the surrounding micro-environment. Renal fibrosis, developed from persistent inflammation, is worsened by M2 macrophages, yet the precise mechanisms underlying macrophage M2 polarization remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of Kv1.

There are evidence showing that meteorological factors, such as temperature and humidity, have critical effects on transmission of some infectious diseases, while quantifying the influence is challenging. In this study we develop a learning-explaining framework to discover the particular dependence of transmission mechanisms on meteorological factors based on multiple source data. The incidence rate based on the epidemic data and epidemic model is theoretically identified, and meanwhile the practical discovery of particular formula is feasible through deep neural networks (DNN), symbolic regression (SR) and sparse identification of nonlinear dynamics (SINDy).
