Family participation is regarded as crucial for promoting patient well-being, particularly in geriatric care, where patients often face greater challenges and require additional support in making medical decisions. The importance of family participation is frequently framed within a cultural context that acknowledges differing conceptions of autonomy. However, it remains unclear how family members are actually prompted or discouraged in their participation in medical decision-making.

Natural cytotoxic peptides (NCPs) are emerging sources of novel anticancer chemotherapeutics. Especially, Melittin, which is the major component of bee venom and the first-in-class NCP, has been considered as a promising anticancer scaffold. Nevertheless, as a classical linear, cationic, amphipathic, and membrane-lytic peptide, Melittin may be easily degraded by proteases, suffering from poor stability, moderate anticancer durability, and severe hemolysis.

The recurrence of drug-resistant and expensive treatment drugs are major causes of the low survival rate of multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Exploring a safe, effective, low-cost and novel drug treatment for MM is a promising strategy to relieve the burden of MM patients. In this study, we found that prodigiosin could inhibit MM cell proliferation and induce MM cell apoptosis, however, it had a lesser cytotoxic effect on normal B cells within the IC range of MM cells.

Automated pulmonary anomaly detection using computed tomography (CT) examinations is important for the early warning of pulmonary diseases and can support clinical diagnosis and decision-making. Most training of existing pulmonary disease detection and lesion segmentation models requires expert annotations, which is time-consuming and labour-intensive, and struggles to generalize across atypical diseases. In contrast, unsupervised anomaly detection alleviates the demand for dataset annotation and is more generalizable than supervised methods in detecting rare pathologies.

The widespread distribution and ecumenical abundance of the poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (De Geer), in chicken houses, has been bringing about one intractable challenge for the egg-laying hens. However, because of the appearance of drug resistance and the animal safety legislation, the search for some effective insecticidal agents is necessary. In the present investigation, the essential oil extracted from the tender shoots and young leaflets of Toona sinensis (Chinese toon, TSEO) were demonstrated to be not only display significant antioxidant effect, but also revealed prominent insecticidal activity against the poultry red mite.

Introduction And Importance: Renal artery aneurysm (RAA) is a rare, but potentially life-threatening condition. The rarity of malignancy-associated RAAs limits our understanding of their natural history, morphological characteristics, intervention criteria, and available treatment options. When these aneurysms manifest as large cystic formations, they may mimic renal masses or cysts.

Intensive farming of fed fish could produce large amounts of uneaten feed and feces, potentially leading to increased nitrous oxide (NO) emissions. Filter-feeding fish can ingest residual feed and feces, but it is unclear whether introducing them into fed fish farming ponds could reduce NO emissions. This study employed monoculture of fed largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, LB) and polyculture of LB with filter-feeding silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, SC) at density ratios of 18:1, 9:1 and 4.

Various methods have been explored to activate potassium permanganate (Mn(VII)) for the elimination of organic compounds, typically by generating highly-reactive manganese species (RMnS) or mediated by electron transfer process (ETP). However, the oxidation selectivity, transformation pathways, toxicity byproduct potential, and efficacy in complicated water matrices associated with RMnS and ETP have not been comprehensively evaluated and compared, which is important for selecting a fit-of-purpose mechanism for water remediation. This study selected Mn(VII)/graphite process and ultraviolet (UV)/Mn(VII) process as the model ETP-dominated system and RMnS-dominated system, respectively.

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is one of the most rigorously regulated contaminants frequently detected in surface and groundwater. Magnetic iron sulfides are naturally abundant, environmentally friendly materials ideal for the removal of Cr(VI) from contaminated water, but the high-spin states of Fe(III) ions limits their adsorption affinity. Herein, we develop a heteroatom-doping approach to boost the Cr(VI) removal efficacy of greigite.

Background: Hospitalized children experience mortality as a result of infections. Since the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, China's strict prevention measures have curbed pathogen transmission, altering infection-related epidemiology. The Futang Research Center of Pediatric Development has collected the face sheet of discharge medical records (FSMRs) data from 27 tertiary children's hospitals since January 2016, which facilitate us to investigate this issue.

Background: Talaromyces marneffei is an emerging pathogen, and the number of infections in HIV-negative individuals is increasing. In HIV-negative individuals, talaromycosis is usually misdiagnosed as another disease, especially tuberculosis (TB).
Methods: We retrospectively extracted the clinical data of HIV-negative patients with Talaromyces marneffei infection from 2018 to 2023, analyzed the differences between TB patients and talaromycosis patients and attempted to establish differential diagnosis models utilizing clinical prediction models for these two diseases.
