Massive bleeding and bacterial infection of wounds may be life-threatening or even lead to death. Nowadays, gelatin-based hemostatic sponges have been widely used, but gelatin is not antibacterial and has poor structural stability. In this study, we mixed an antibacterial polypeptide, ε-poly-L-lysine (EPL), into gelatin.

Pancreatic cancer is characterized by occult onset, low early diagnosis rate, rapid progress, and poor prognosis. Due to the low response rate and low PD-L1 expression in pancreatic cancer, the therapeutic application of PL-L1 inhibitors in pancreatic cancer is greatly limited. In vitro studies showed that the expression of PD-L1 increased in pancreatic cancer cells stimulated by fluorouracil (5-FU).

Tree growth and lifespan are key determinants of forest dynamics, and ultimately control carbon stocks. Warming and increasing CO have been observed to increase growth but such increases may not result in large net biomass gains due to trade-offs between growth and lifespan. A deeper understanding of the nature of the trade-off and its potential spatial variation is crucial to improve predictions of the future carbon sink.

Further miniaturization of magnetic nanomaterials is intrinsically accompanied by a reduction in spin ordered domains, resulting in size-dependent magnetic behaviors. Consequently, a longstanding roadblock in the advancement of nanodevices based on magnetic nanomaterials is the absence of a method to beat the size-dependent limit in nanomagnetism. Here, we discover and exploit a spin-lattice coupling effect in three-dimensional freestanding magnetic nanoparticles to beat the size-dependent limit for the first time.

Three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs), a class of highly porous crystalline polymers, have exhibited great potentials in many applications. However, the reported topologies of 3D COFs have been limited to high-symmetry crystal systems, which significantly hindered the development of such functional materials. Herein, we demonstrate the first construction of four highly crystalline orthorhombic 3D COFs with an unprecedented fmj topology, based on judiciously choosing rotatable monomers.

We report the first example of photocatalytic acceptorless dehydrogenation using cationic Eosin Y as a bifunctional photocatalyst, without metal catalysts or HAT reagents. Under Bayesian optimized conditions, a wide range of flavones were synthesized in moderate to excellent yields, many of which were reported with biological activities. Mechanistic studies suggest that flavones likely form through two HAT processes, with hydrogen release occurring photoredox.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), such as atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases, heart failure (HF), and acute coronary syndrome, represent a significant threat to global health and impose considerable socioeconomic burdens. The intricate pathogenesis of CVD involves various regulatory mechanisms, among which microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical posttranscriptional regulators. In particular, miR-155 has demonstrated differential expression patterns across a spectrum of CVD and is implicated in the etiology and progression of arterial disorders.

Baseline risk stratification of cancer therapy-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) in patients with breast cancer who received anthracycline is a very important clinical issue. In this study, we used the Cox model to derive and validate a new score system based on LVTFD for baseline risk stratification of CTRCD in breast cancer patients receiving anthracycline.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAge-related hearing loss (ARHL) is considered one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders in the elderly; however, how it contributes to cognitive decline is poorly understood. With resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging from 66 individuals with ARHL and 54 healthy controls, group spatial independent component analyses, sliding window analyses, graph-theory methods, multilayer networks, and correlation analyses were used to identify ARHL-induced disturbances in static and dynamic functional network connectivity (sFNC/dFNC), alterations in global network switching and their links to cognitive performances. ARHL was associated with decreased sFNC/dFNC within the default mode network (DMN) and increased sFNC/dFNC between the DMN and central executive, salience (SN), and visual networks.

The COVID-19 mRNA vaccine and RSV mRNA vaccine have been approved on the market. Due to the inherent nuclease-instability and negative charge of mRNA, delivery systems are developed to protect the mRNA from degradation and facilitate its crossing cell membrane to express functional proteins or peptides in the cytoplasm.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is expected to become the fifth leading cause of death globally by 2040. Cardiovascular disease (CVD), particularly heart failure (HF), is a severe complication in CKD patients on hemodialysis. This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the risk of heart failure hospitalization in hemodialysis patients, providing a valuable tool for clinical decision-making.

Topical delivery of therapeutics on the skin can effectively alleviate skin symptoms of psoriasis and reduce systemic toxicity. However, the low delivery efficiency caused by the stratum corneum barrier limits the therapeutic impact. Here, we reported an oligopeptide hydrogel that encapsulates cell-penetrating-peptide (CPP)-decorated curcumin-loaded nanoemulsions (Cur-CNEs) to enhance the skin penetration of curcumin for topical treatment of psoriasis.

Viral infections in swine, such as African swine fever (ASF), porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), have a significant impact on the swine industry. Despite the significant progress in the recent efforts to develop effective vaccines against viral diseases in swine, the search for new protective vaccination strategy remains a challenge. The antigenic epitope, acting as a fundamental unit, can initiate either a cellular or humoral immune response.
