Air-conditioning systems, composed mainly of humidity control and heat reallocation units, play a pivotal role in upholding superior air quality and human well-being across diverse environments ranging from international space stations and pharmacies to granaries and cultural relic preservation sites, and to commercial and residential buildings. The adoption of sorbent water as the working pair and low-grade renewable or waste heat in adsorption-driven air-conditioning presents a state-of-the-art solution, notably for its energy efficiency and eco-friendliness vis-à-vis conventional electricity-driven vapor compression cycles. Here, we introduce a rational π-extension strategy to engineer an ultrarobust and highly porous zirconium metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF).

Ginseng-containing Shentao Ruangan granules (STR) have been a well-known Chinese medicine prescription for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in China for decades. This study aimed to establish an experimental framework to decipher the underlying mechanism of STR in the treatment of HCC. Microarray analysis, network pharmacology, RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), bioinformatics analysis, and and experiments were used as integrated approaches to uncover the effects and mechanisms of action of STR.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the predominant form of dementia, is a neurodegenerative disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by a subtle onset and a spectrum of cognitive and functional declines. The clinical manifestation of AD encompasses memory deficits, cognitive deterioration, and behavioral disturbances, culminating in a severe impairment of daily living skills. Despite its high prevalence, accounting for 60-70% of all dementia cases, there remains an absence of curative therapeutics.

Foot ulcers are amongst the most prevalent complications of diabetes, known for their delayed healing process. Recent research indicates that the transcription factor forkhead box M1 (FOXM1) plays a role in promoting diabetic ulcer repair. However, the precise mechanisms underlying FOXM1 functions in this context remain unclear.

The inaugural lecture, or oration, delivered by Regiomontanus at the University of Padua in 1464 is deemed a document of remarkable significance in the history of science. Although it has attracted much scholarly attention, few efforts have been directed towards identifying the traces of Byzantine influence it might carry; that is to say, the extent to which Regiomontanus might have been influenced by the views of his patron, Bessarion. This paper responds to the need for such a study, arriving at the following conclusions.

Background: Previous economic evidence about interventions for schizophrenia is outdated, non-transparent and/or limited to a specific clinical context.

Aims: We developed a discrete event simulation (DES) model for estimating the cost-effectiveness of interventions in schizophrenia in the UK.

Method: The DES model was developed based on the structure of previous models, populated with demographic, clinical and cost data from the UK, and antipsychotics' effects from recent network meta-analyses.

Harnessing nanoengineered CAR-T cell strategies to advance solid tumor immunotherapy.

Trends Cell Biol

December 2024

Department of Biotherapy, Cancer Center and State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, China. Electronic address:

The efficacy and safety of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy is still inconclusive in solid tumor treatment. Recently, nanotechnology has emerged as a potent strategy to reshape CAR-T cell therapy with promising outcomes. This review aims to discuss the significant potential of nano-engineered CAR-T cell therapy in addressing existing challenges, including CAR-T cell engineering evolution, tumor microenvironment (TME) modulation, and precise CAR-T cell therapy (precise targeting, monitoring, and activation), under the main consideration of clinical translation.

Electronic address:

Protein PARylation is a reversible post-translational modification; however, its role in fungal virulence has remained elusive. Recently, Gao et al. demonstrated that PARylation of two 14-3-3 regulatory proteins by poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase is essential for the virulence of rice blast fungus, highlighting the critical regulatory function of PARylation in fungal pathogenicity.

Learning curve in mandibular reconstruction with vascularized iliac crest free flap: a cumulative sum analysis.

Int J Oral Maxillofac Surg

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Oral and Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, Key Laboratory of Oral Biomedicine Ministry of Education, Hubei Key Laboratory of Stomatology, School and Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China; Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Head Neck Oncology, School and Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. Electronic address:

The repair of mandibular defects is challenging due to the functional and structural complexity of the mandible. The aim of this study was to evaluate the learning curve of mandibular reconstruction using a vascularized iliac crest free flap (ICFF) performed by a single surgeon. This retrospective study used the cumulative sum (CUSUM) method to analyse the operation times of 60 patients who underwent mandibular reconstruction surgery with an ICFF between 2013 and 2022.

Division of Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases, Oregon Health & Science University, Portland, OR, 97239, USA; Rheumatology Section, VA Portland Health Care System, Portland, OR, 97239, USA. Electronic address:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder with a complex pathogenesis that evolves through various stages before clinical symptoms emerge. This review outlines the natural history of RA, starting from genetic predisposition and environmental triggers to preclinical autoimmunity and subsequent joint inflammation. Key genetic factors interact with environmental elements like smoking and infections, producing autoantibodies such as anti-citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) and rheumatoid factor, which precede clinical manifestations by several years.

Background: The use of the residual cancer burden (RCB) for assessing breast cancer after neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) is increasingly common, but the prognostic difference between RCB 0 and RCB I is unclear.

Methods: We systematically reviewed literature from PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and oncology conferences until September 24, 2023. We used fixed- and random-effects models to calculate hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for event-free survival (EFS), overall survival (OS), and distant disease-free survival (DDFS).

Purpose: The clinical benefits of pyrotinib plus taxanes or vinorelbine have not been studied systemically. Consequently, we conducted a prospective evaluation to assess the efficacy and safety of pyrotinib plus taxanes or vinorelbine in patients with human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2)-positive metastatic breast cancer (MBC).

Methods: Patients with HER2-positive MBC were included to receive pyrotinib combined with taxanes or vinorelbine in Jiangsu Cancer Hospital.

The Impact of BMI on Heart Rate During Suspension Laryngoscopy Operation in Patients With Laryngeal Lesions: A Prospective Cohort Study.

J Voice

December 2024

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Suspension laryngoscopy can trigger vagal reflexes, leading to a decrease in heart rate, a phenomenon that is more common in patients with a high body mass index (BMI). This study aims to systematically evaluate the effect of BMI on heart rate during suspension laryngoscopy (SL-HR) in patients with laryngeal lesions.

Methods: We employed univariate generalized linear regression and stratified analyses to assess the relationship between BMI and changes in SLHR, adjusting for confounders such as age, gender, intubation type, and depth.
