Semiparametric estimator for the covariate-specific receiver operating characteristic curve.

Stat Methods Med Res

January 2025

CITMAga and Department of Statistics and Operations Research, Universidade de Vigo, Vigo, Galicia, Spain.

The study of the predictive ability of a marker is mainly based on the accuracy measures provided by the so-called confusion matrix. Besides, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve has become a popular index for summarizing the overall accuracy of a marker. However, the nature of the relationship between the marker and the outcome, and the role that potential confounders play in this relationship could be fundamental in order to extrapolate the observed results.

Assessing muscle mass in critically ill patients remains challenging. This retrospective cohort study explores the potential of phase angle (PA°) derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as a surrogate marker for muscle mass monitoring by associating it with daily creatinine excretion (DCE), a structural and metabolic muscle mass marker. In 20 ICU patients, we observed a linear relationship between PA° and DCE at initial (S1) and follow-up (S2) points, with Rho values of 0.

A dataset of Antarctic ecosystems in ice-free lands: classification, descriptions, and maps.

Sci Data

January 2025

Centre for Ecosystem Science, School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences, University of New South Wales, Sydney, NSW 2052, Australia.

Antarctica, Earth's least understood and most remote continent, is threatened by human disturbances and climate-related changes, underscoring the imperative for biodiversity inventories to inform conservation. Antarctic ecosystems support unique species and genetic diversity, deliver essential ecosystem services and contribute to planetary stability. We present Antarctica's first comprehensive ecosystem classification and map of ice-free lands, which host most of the continent's biodiversity.

Background: Long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA) can complicate the management of esophageal atresia (EA) with or without a tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). This series describes a short interval, staged, thoracoscopic internal traction approach for LGEA with distal TEF to manage complex anastomotic tension or an anatomically impossible esophageal anastomosis.

Methods: A retrospective review (2018-2024) was performed across four tertiary centers to identify patients with LGEA and distal TEF, managed with a staged, thoracoscopic internal traction approach.

Most circadian texts begin by stating that clocks are pervasive throughout the tree of life. Indeed, clock mechanisms have been described from cyanobacteria to humans, representing a notable example of convergent evolution: yet, there are several phyla in animals, protists or within fungi and bacteria, in which homologs of some-or all-known clock components seem to be absent, posing inevitable questions about the evolution of circadian systems. Moreover, as we move away from model organisms, there are several taxa in which core clock elements can be identified at the genomic levels.

Impacts of different intensities of commercial Sphagnum moss extraction on CO fluxes in a northern Patagonia peatland.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Department of Forest Sciences, Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Universidad de La Frontera, Temuco, Chile.

Peatlands are key ecosystems for global climate regulation because they provide the most efficient carbon sink on the planet. Despite this, they have been widely degraded by various anthropogenic disturbances, causing imbalances in their ecological functioning. A more recent type of disturbance corresponds to the commercial extraction of Sphagnum mosses, which has been carried out in temperate peatlands distributed in Australasia and Patagonia.

Departamento de Química, Laboratorio de Química Aplicada y Sustentable (LabQAS), Universidad del Bío-Bío, Concepción, Chile.

Ice-free areas are habitats for most of Antarctica's terrestrial biodiversity. Although fungal communities are an important element of these habitats, knowledge of their assemblages and ecological functions is still limited. Herein, we investigated the diversity, composition, and ecological functionality of fungal communities inhabiting sediments from ice-free areas across pristine and anthropogenically impacted sites in the Fildes Peninsula on King George Island, Antarctica.

The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) is a widely used self-report measure of subjective well-being, but studies of its measurement invariance across a large number of nations remain limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset-with data collected between 2020 and 2022 -to assess measurement invariance of the SWLS across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups (N = 56,968). All participants completed the SWLS under largely uniform conditions.

Pandemic antigones: The role of women in shaping funeral practices in Chile.

Death Stud

January 2025

Social Sciences Faculty, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.

This study, conducted in 2020, investigates the impact of health restrictions on funeral rites during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile, based on the experience of women who took part in these rites. Using Antigone's tragedy as a theoretical framework, it explores the tension between the moral law of honoring the deceased and the universal law manifested in pandemic-related restrictions-four semi-structured online interviews with women in Santiago who engaged in adapted funeral practices. The qualitative analysis revealed that participants developed innovative rituals to maintain the dignity of farewells and reintegrate the deceased into public and symbolic spheres, such as virtual gatherings and personalized tributes.

Instituto de Ciencias Aplicadas, Facultad de Ingeniería, Universidad Autónoma de Chile, Sede Talca, Talca, 3460000, Chile.

In the present study, the taxonomic position of Salinisphaera halophila (NZ_AYKF00000000) and Salinisphaera orenii (NZ_AYKH00000000) was re-evaluated. In addition, their metabolic potentials and mechanisms for mitigating stress conditions were determined. Comparisons of 16S rRNA gene sequences, analysis of the phylogenetic tree, phylogenomic tree, average nucleotide identity (ANI), and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values were conducted.

Background: Recent evidence from both randomized controlled trials and cohort studies in adults suggests that plasma remnant cholesterol (RC) levels predict cardiovascular disease. In children, studies are scarce, although high levels of RC might represent a marker of early atherosclerotic damage. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the cardiometabolic risk associated with RC, which extends beyond low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) in children.

Patients with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative (HER2-) primary breast cancer (BC) have low pathological complete response (pCR) rates with neoadjuvant chemotherapy. A subset of ER+/HER2- BC contains dense lymphocytic infiltration. We hypothesized that addition of an anti-programmed death 1 agent may increase pCR rates in this BC subtype.

Chilean Mediterranean forest on the verge of collapse? Evidence from a comprehensive risk analysis.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Departamento de Ingeniería Geoespacial y Ambiental, Facultad de Ingeniería, Universidad de Santiago de Chile, Chile.

World forests are experiencing significant modification due to the confluence of climate change and deforestation, with Mediterranean forests facing particularly acute threats. The Chilean Sclerophyllous Mediterranean Forest is considered a world biodiversity hotspot, a restricted ecosystem type that is highly affected by global change drivers. Despite the high ecological and environmental importance of this ecosystem, an integrated assessment of its risk derived from climate and land-use change is lacking.
