Laboratorio de Química Teórica Computacional (QTC), Facultad de Química y de Farmacia, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Avenida Vicuña Mackenna 4860, 7820436, Santiago de Chile, Chile.

Context: Dopamine -monooxygenase (D M) is an essential enzyme in the organism that regioselectively converts dopamine into R-norepinephrine, the key step of the reaction, studied in this paper, is a hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from dopamine to a superoxo complex on D M, forming a hydroperoxo intermediate and dopamine radical. It was found that the formation of a hydrogen bond between dopamine and the D M catalyst strengthens the substrate-enzyme interaction and facilitates the HAT which takes place selectively to give the desired enantiomeric form of the product. Six reactions leading to the hydroperoxo intermediate were analyzed in detail using theoretical and computational tools in order to identify the most probable reaction mechanism.

Memory & Aging Center, Department of Neurology, University of California in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA, USA.

Background: Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD)- TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP) type C is commonly associated with a clinical diagnosis of semantic dementia (SD). Although anterior temporal lobe (ATL) is one of the primary atrophy centers, it is yet to be defined which other areas are involved in the TDP-type C pathology early in the disease course.

Methods: We included 16 patients with autopsy-confirmed FTLD-TDP type C from the database of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center: 13 patients with semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA) and predominant left ATL atrophy, and 3 patients with semantic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD) and predominant right ATL atrophy.

Background: Cognitive complaints (CC) refer to a reported experience of cognitive decline and are recognized as a potential precursor to future functional decline and progression to dementia. Identifying individuals with CC may be a valuable opportunity for preventive measures, early detection, and intervention strategies to address dementia risk. However, the characteristics of CC and its associated risk of progression to dementia are highly heterogeneous, influenced significantly by CC identification methods, recruitment approaches, and attrition in longitudinal cohort studies.

Low-energy light ion beams are an essential resource in lithography for nanopatterning magnetic materials and interfaces due to their ability to modify the structure and properties of metamaterials. Here we create ferromagnetic/non-ferromagnetic heterostructures with a controlled layer thickness and nanometer-scale precision. For this, hydrogen ion (H) irradiation is used to reduce the antiferromagnetic nickel oxide (NiO) layer into ferromagnetic Ni with lower fluence than in the case of helium ion (He) irradiation.

The D-lactate enigma: exploring the inflammatory influence of D-lactate in cattle.

Front Vet Sci

December 2024

Laboratory of Inflammation Pharmacology and Immunometabolism, Institute of Pharmacology and Morphophysiology, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile.

D-lactic acidosis is associated with fermentative disturbances and is often marked by elevated levels of D-lactic acid in the blood, ruminal fluid, and synovial fluid in cattle. D-lactic acidosis is linked to various inflammatory manifestations, and although the causative factors have been extensively explored, the exact pathogenesis of the associated inflammation remains elusive. Notably, less attention has been given to D-lactate, a stereoisomer found in the plasma of affected animals, which may lead to D-lactic acidosis.
