Importance: It is unknown whether adenotonsillectomy causes undesirable weight gain in children with mild obstructive sleep-disordered breathing (oSDB).

Objective: To compare changes in anthropometric measures in children with mild oSDB treated with adenotonsillectomy vs watchful waiting.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This was an exploratory analysis of the Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy Trial for Snoring (PATS) randomized clinical trial of adenotonsillectomy vs watchful waiting for mild oSDB (snoring with obstructive apnea-hypopnea index of <3 events/hour) that took place at 7 pediatric tertiary care centers across the US and included 458 children aged 3.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine if controlled substance waste management systems (CSWMS) demonstrate microbial growth, and therefore present a potential infection risk to pediatric hospital patients.

Methods: Twenty CSWMS, either Smart Sink or Pharma Lock systems, located in patient care areas were sampled. Twelve were located in critical care areas.

The conundrum of high-grade hydronephrosis with non-obstructive drainage on diuretic renography.

J Pediatr Urol

July 2024

Children's Hospital of Orange County, Division of Pediatric Urology, Orange, CA, USA; University of California, Irvine, Department of Urology, Irvine, CA, USA.

Background: Patients with high grade hydronephrosis (HN) and non-obstructive drainage on mercaptoacetyltriglycine (MAG-3) diuretic renography (renal scans) can pose a dilemma for clinicians. Some patients may progress and require pyeloplasty; however, more clarity is needed on outcomes among these patients.

Objective: Our primary objective was to predict which patients with high-grade HN and non-obstructive renal scan, (defined as T ½ time <20 min) would experience resolution of HN.

In this case series, we present four unique cases of Riga-Fede disease (RFD), a rare disorder characterized by mucosal trauma as a result of repetitive tongue protrusion against the incisors, leading to the development of a large oral mass/ulceration. Due to the rapid development and growth of these lesions mimicking malignancy, it is important for the general and pediatric otolaryngologist to correctly diagnose and treat this benign disorder. This series highlights the variable clinical presentations, along with comorbidities of RFD, as well as the importance of interdisciplinary care between the pediatric otolaryngologist and pediatric dentist in its management.

In the fall of 2019, a much-publicized court case brought to national attention the issues of patient-doctor confidentiality when it comes to reporting the deaths of newborns in the United States. It is unclear whether the recent overturning of will lead to more cases like this. This article discusses issues of countertransference, as well as the ethical and legal implications were it to be a psychiatrist, in active treatment of such a patient, who would be required to make such a report.

Introduction: The complement response activates upon reperfusion in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and contributes to excessive neuroinflammation and worse outcomes. C5a is a powerful anaphylatoxin central to each of the complement pathways, and its engagement with C5aR1 is directly tied to brain injury and neuronal death. Reasoning C5aR1 antagonism can decrease excessive neuroinflammation and thereby improve neurological and functional outcomes, we tested this hypothesis in a rat model of HIE with PMX205, a small molecule that inhibits C5a-C5aR1 interaction.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) and inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) are rare cancers observed predominantly in children and young adults. ALCL accounts for 10-15% of all pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphomas and is commonly diagnosed at an advanced stage of disease. In children, 84-91% of cases of ALCL harbor an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene translocation.

Evaluation, analysis, and reporting of medication adherence for clinical trials of anticoagulants in children: guidance from the ISTH SSC Subcommittee on Pediatric and Neonatal Thrombosis and Hemostasis.

J Thromb Haemost

July 2024

Department of Pediatrics, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Division of Hematology, Cancer and Blood Diseases Institute, Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

In response to growing recognition that nonadherence prevents children, adolescents, and young adults from achieving the therapeutic benefits of anticoagulant medication, the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Scientific and Standardization Committee Subcommittee on Pediatric and Neonatal Thrombosis and Hemostasis convened a working party on medication adherence. The primary aim of this article was to synthesize recommendations from the larger adherence science literature to provide guidance regarding the classification, collection, and interpretation of anticoagulation adherence data. The secondary aim of this article was to evaluate the degree to which trials published from 2013 to 2023 adhered to these guidance recommendations.

Objective: The shock index (SI), the ratio of heart rate to systolic blood pressure, is a clinical tool for assessing injury severity. Age-adjusted SI models may improve predictive value for injured children in the out-of-hospital setting. We sought to characterize the proportion of children in the prehospital setting with an abnormal SI using established criteria, describe the age-based distribution of SI among injured children, and determine prehospital interventions by SI.

Center for Gene Therapy, The Abigail Wexner Research Institute, Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, OH, USA; The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA.

Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare, degenerative, recessive X-linked neuromuscular disease. Mutations in the gene encoding dystrophin lead to the absence of functional dystrophin protein. Individuals living with DMD exhibit progressive muscle weakness resulting in loss of ambulation and limb function, respiratory insufficiency, and cardiomyopathy, with multiorgan involvement.

Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, Norfolk, VA, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - Foreign body ingestions are common in kids under 6, with serious complications being rare but possible, especially with specific items like sharp objects, caustics, magnets, and button batteries.
  • - Complications from these ingestions can include gastrointestinal obstruction, perforation, necrosis, and fistula formation, leading to worse health outcomes.
  • - The initial assessment involves taking a patient's history, conducting a physical exam, and using X-rays to find radiopaque objects; removal of the foreign body is necessary in high-risk cases or when the patient shows symptoms.

Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at risk of complications from viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2. We present the clinical characteristics and outcomes of pediatric patients with SCD from the Pediatric COVID-19 United States Registry who developed acute COVID-19 due to SARS-CoV-2 infection (n = 259) or multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C; n = 4). Nearly half of hospitalized children with SCD and SARS-CoV-2 infection required supplemental oxygen, though children with SCD had fewer intensive care (ICU) admissions compared to the general pediatric and immunocompromised populations.
