Background: This study assessed feasibility constructs of adolescent contraceptive care in the pediatric emergency department (PED), including contraception initiation.
Methods: We conducted a randomized trial in two PEDs with pregnancy-capable adolescents aged 15-18 years who were assigned to enhanced usual care (usual) or same-day initiation (same day). All received counseling and clinic referral, but same-day participants could also receive contraception in the PED.

Ketogenic diet therapy (KDT) is a safe and effective treatment for epilepsy and glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1) deficiency syndrome in infancy. Complete weaning from breastfeeding is not required to implement KDT; however, breastfeeding remains uncommon. Barriers include feasibility concerns and lack of referrals to expert centres.

Parechovirus A (PeV-A) infections have been detected with increasing frequency in US infants under 6 months of age, leading to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) health advisory in July 2022. Clinicians are advised to consider PeV-A laboratory testing of blood and cerebrospinal fluid when infants present with unexplained fever, sepsis-like illness, or neurological issues. Clinical laboratories are encouraged to offer in-house molecular testing for PeV-A to avoid diagnostic delays, unnecessary use of antibiotics, and prolonged hospitalization of infants presenting with sepsis-like illness.

We sought to define the cooccurring mutational profile of FLT3-ITD-positive (ITDpos) acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in pediatric and young adult patients and to define the prognostic impact of cooperating mutations. We identified 464 patients with FLT3-ITD mutations treated on Children's Oncology Group trials with available sequencing and outcome data. Overall survival, event-free survival (EFS), and relapse risk were determined according to the presence of cooccurring risk stratifying mutations.

Background: Opioid-induced constipation (OIC) is a well-known phenomenon, although there is limited literature evaluating the incidence of OIC in children admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The primary aim of this study was to determine the incidence of OIC in the PICU and to determine if it is associated with a higher rate of morbidities or prolonged length of stay (LOS).
Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective chart review from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, in our PICU.

Objectives: Nasoalveolar moulding (NAM) has resulted in profound outcomes in the treatment of bilateral cleft lip and palate patients, including non-surgical columellar lengthening and nasal moulding. We examine an innovative alternative that is less invasive, yet provides similar results. In this study, we describe a novel approach using the Customized Nasal Clip Protocol (CNCP™) and compare the treatment outcomes of a small cohort of infants with bilateral cleft lip ± palate with published results of the Grayson nasoalveolar moulding protocol.

Intrauterine smoke (IUS) exposure during early childhood has been associated with a number of negative health consequences, including reduced lung function and asthma susceptibility. The biological mechanisms underlying these associations have not been established. MicroRNAs regulate the expression of numerous genes involved in lung development.

Many adolescents use the emergency department (ED) as their primary source of health care. As a result, the ED serves as a unique opportunity to reach adolescents. Although many adolescent visits to the ED are related to reproductive health, ED providers report barriers to providing this care, including lack of training.

The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has risen significantly in the past two decades. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of mental health providers who have specialized training in delivering evidenced-based services to this population. Early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) is an evidenced-based treatment recommended for toddlers with ASD, and school psychologists are uniquely positioned to help children with ASD receive it.
