Objective: We sought to compare operative times and complications for attending surgeons operating alone or with an assistant including an orthopedic resident, fellow, or physician assistant (PA) for closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) of pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (SCH), an archetypal procedure integral to the education of orthopedic trainees.

Design: Using a retrospective database collected following institutional review board approval, a 1-way ANOVA (non-parametric) was used to assess the effect of assistant absence or presence by type of assistant on mean operative time. We analyzed the association between the attending surgeon assistant categories and the complication rate using Fisher's Exact Test.

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate whether conductive hearing loss (CHL) can be differentiated from sensorineural hearing loss in children ages 3-18 using a diotic and antiphasic digits-in-noise (DIN) tablet-based test using existing adult cut-off criteria.

Methods: A blinded multi-institutional prospective cohort of 64 children aged 3-18 scheduled for an audiometric soundbooth evaluation with a pediatric audiologist and a same-day otolaryngologist examination were recruited for the study. Following a conventional audiogram, the subjects underwent diotic (same-phased stimuli) and antiphasic (out-of-phase stimuli) DIN testing on a HearX Samsung Galaxy tablet with over-the-ear headphones, for a total of 128 measurements.

Objective: Tympanostomy tube placement has been shown to decrease systemic antibiotics usage in patients with recurrent acute otitis media. Systemic antibiotics in children are associated with an increase in antibiotic-associated conditions (asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergy, atopic dermatitis, celiac disease, overweight/obesity, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], autism, learning disability, and Clostridium difficile colonization) later in life. The objective of this study is to estimate whether tympanostomy tube placement is associated with a reduction in antibiotic-associated conditions in children with recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM).

Aim: To investigate metabolic risk factors (RFs) that accumulated over 20 years related to left ventricular mass index (LVMI), relative wall thickness (RWT) and LV remodelling patterns in participants with versus without early-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) or prediabetes (pre-D).

Methods: A total of 287 early-onset T2D/pre-D individuals versus 565 sociodemographic-matched euglycaemic individuals were selected from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study, years 0-25. We used the area under the growth curve (AUC) derived from quadratic random-effects models of four or more repeated measures of RFs (fasting glucose [FG], insulin, triglycerides [TG], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), total cholesterol (total-c), blood pressure and body mass index) to estimate the cumulative burden, and their associations with LV outcomes.

Background: Neurodevelopmental challenges are the most prevalent comorbidity associated with a diagnosis of critical CHD, and there is a high incidence of gross and fine motor delays noted in early infancy. Background: Stent encrustation with debris and mucostasis is a significant cause of airway injury and comorbidity, leading to ~25% of stent exchanges (1-3). Previous work from our group has shown that the experimental coating can reduce mucous adhesion in bench testing and demonstrated a signal for reducing airway injury and mucostasis in a feasibility study.

Autophagy regulates the degradation of damaged organelles and protein aggregates, and is critical for neuronal development, homeostasis, and maintenance, yet few neurodevelopmental disorders have been associated with pathogenic variants in genes encoding autophagy-related proteins. We report three individuals from two unrelated families with a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by speech and motor impairment, and similar facial characteristics. Rare, conserved, bi-allelic variants were identified in ATG4D, encoding one of four ATG4 cysteine proteases important for autophagosome biogenesis, a hallmark of autophagy.
