Background: SMAD2 is a coregulator that binds a variety of transcription factors in human development. Heterozygous loss-of-function and missense variants are identified in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) or arterial aneurysms. Mechanisms that cause distinct cardiovascular phenotypes remain unknown.

Background: The role of first-line single-agent rituximab immunotherapy in follicular lymphoma (FL) remains debated, as most patients eventually undergo chemotherapy.
Methods: In this study, we retrospectively analyzed 81 FL patients treated with first-line single-agent rituximab monotherapy with ( = 53) or without ( = 28) consolidation. Fifty-one patients (63%) were high-tumor burden according to Group d'Etude des Lymphomes Folliculaires (GELF) criteria.

Introduction: Insomnia is a highly prevalent condition that predisposes individuals to many chronic pain disorders, with most of them showing pronounced sexual dimorphism. We investigated whether experimental insomnia-like sleep disturbances (ESD) affect spontaneous pain and pain sensitivity, and whether sex modulates pain responses.
Methods: Twenty-four healthy participants (50% females, age 28.

Introduction: Vasa previa is a complication of pregnancy, which affects approximately 1:1200 pregnancies, and when undiagnosed prenatally, it can be associated with significant perinatal mortality. This condition is thought to be a sporadic entity without known genetic or familial associations and thus considered to carry a negligible recurrence risk.
Key Findings: We present a case of a 42-year-old gravida 3 para 2 diagnosed on transvaginal ultrasound with a vasa previa at 34 weeks associated with vaginal bleeding, which required an urgent caesarean in a prior spontaneous pregnancy.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an evidence-based algorithm for the management of symptomatic bipartite patella in the pediatric and adolescent population based on a systemic review of the published literature.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines on PubMed and Embase, selecting for studies discussing the management of symptomatic bipartite patella.
Results: Five studies met criteria, involving 315 knees (314 patients, average age 15.

Introduction: Adverse perinatal outcomes (APO) pose a significant global challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study aims to analyse two cohorts of high-risk pregnant women for APO to comprehend risk factors and improve prediction accuracy.
Methods: We considered an LMIC and a high-income country (HIC) population to derive XGBoost classifiers to predict low birth weight (LBW) from a comprehensive set of maternal and fetal characteristics including socio-demographic, past and current pregnancy information, fetal biometry and fetoplacental Doppler measurements.
Purpose: Research in high-income countries has extensively documented the non-operative management of spleen injuries in children, resulting in low splenectomy rates (5%). However, there is a lack of literature on this topic in low- and-middle-income countries (LMICs), including Brazil. This scoping review analyzed pediatric spleen trauma research trends in Brazil and the United States of America (USA).

Introduction: Seasonal influenza poses significant societal costs, including illness, mortality, and reduced work productivity. Vaccination remains the most effective strategy for preventing the disease, yet vaccination rates in the United States fall below 50% for adults. Understanding the factors influencing vaccination decisions is crucial for designing interventions to improve uptake.

Several states have recently enacted laws permanently granting all public school students access to free breakfast and lunch. However, children with dietary restrictions, such as celiac disease (CeD), may encounter barriers to participation in these meal programs. We surveyed caregivers of school-aged children with CeD to study barriers to universal school meals.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) profoundly impacts host T and NK cells across the lifespan, yet how this common congenital infection modulates developing fetal immune cell compartments remains underexplored. Using cord blood from neonates with and without congenital HCMV (cCMV) infection, we identify an expansion of Fcγ receptor III-expressing (FcγRIII-expressing) CD8+ T cells following HCMV exposure in utero. Most FcγRIII+CD8+ T cells express the canonical αβ T cell receptor (TCR), but a proportion express noncanonical γδ TCR.

This scoping review assessed the surgical backlog in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) due to COVID-19 and identified mitigation strategies. We searched seven databases for citations from December 2019 to December 2022, focusing on LAC patients with cancelled or postponed procedures. We registered our protocol at Open Science Framework (https://osf.

Background: Altered structural brain development has been identified in fetuses with congenital heart disease (CHD), suggesting that the neurodevelopmental impairment observed later in life might originate in utero. There are many interacting factors that may perturb neurodevelopment during the fetal period and manifest as structural brain alterations, such as altered cerebral substrate delivery and aberrant fetal hemodynamics.
Methods And Results: We extracted structural covariance networks from the log Jacobian determinants of 435 in utero T2 weighted image magnetic resonance imaging scans, (n=67 controls, 368 with CHD) acquired during the third trimester.

Background: Lifelong continuity of care is essential for patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) to maximize health outcomes; unfortunately, gaps in care (GIC) are common. Trends in GIC and of social determinants of health factors contributing to GIC are poorly understood.
Methods And Results: This retrospective cohort study included patients with CHD, aged 0 to 34 years, who underwent surgery between January 2003 and May 2020, followed up at a pediatric subspeciality hospital.

Macrophages maintain hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) quality by assessing cell surface Calreticulin (Calr), an "eat-me" signal induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Using zebrafish genetics, we identified Beta-2-microglobulin (B2m) as a crucial "don't eat-me" signal on blood stem cells. A chemical screen revealed inducers of surface Calr that promoted HSC proliferation without triggering ROS or macrophage clearance.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective serial cross-sectional study of National Pediatric Readiness Project assessments administered to US EDs in 2013 and 2021.
