Background: The COVID-19 pandemic led to emotional and behavioral challenges for hospitalized pediatric patients, their families, and staff. Visitor restrictions, closure of patient lounges and playrooms, masking requirements, and enhanced isolation rules resulted in limited access to typical sources of psychosocial support during this traumatic event. Complementary and integrative health therapies such as acupuncture and related therapies are well suited to provide the humanitarian support patients and families need during times of crisis.

Fludarabine is a nucleoside analog with antileukemic and immunosuppressive activity commonly used in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Several fludarabine population pharmacokinetic (popPK) and pharmacodynamic models have been published enabling the movement towards precision dosing of fludarabine in pediatric HCT; however, developed models have not been validated in a prospective cohort of patients. In this multicenter pharmacokinetic study, fludarabine plasma concentrations were collected via a sparse-sampling strategy.

Case: Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) has been noted after the South American pandemic of Zika virus which peaked in 2015 to 2016, and the associated sequelae are still being described. Scoliosis has been noted in patients with CZS; however, there is a paucity of literature on the prevalence or management of scoliosis secondary to this condition. We report the case of a 5-year-old girl with severe neuromuscular scoliosis due to CZS that was managed with halo-gravity traction, followed by a growth-friendly construct.

Plasma zinc concentrations (PZC) have been shown to significantly increase during zinc supplementation. This study investigated the effects of daily preventive zinc supplementation on hair and nail zinc concentrations compared with a control group. In a randomized controlled trial, 6- to 23-month-old children (n = 3407) in Lao PDR were randomly assigned to one of four groups and followed for ~ 36 weeks: daily preventive zinc dispersible tablet (7 mg/d; PZ), daily micronutrient powder (10 mg zinc/d; MNP), therapeutic zinc supplements for diarrhea treatment (20 mg/d for 10 days; TZ), or daily placebo powder (Control).

Background: Although efforts have been made to address the inequities of surgical care globally, to our knowledge, there has been no comprehensive analysis of orthopaedic clinical observerships in North America that are available for international surgeons.

Methods: Two investigators performed a systematic online search to identify orthopaedic clinical observerships that are available in the United States and Canada for international surgeons. Variables such as host type, geographic location of host site, program type, eligibility criteria, subspecialty focus, application and participation fees, availability of funding, duration of observership, and the quality of online information that is available based on an online content (OC) score were collected.

The improved understanding of trauma-induced coagulopathy in adults has led to an evolution in the strategies of damage-control resuscitation. While its impact on the care of pediatric trauma patients is of tremendous interest, the evidence is sparse, and a great deal of research is still needed in this domain. Areas of particular interest include age-related differences in hemostasis and balanced resuscitation, advances in functional coagulation assays and effective adjunctive medications, such as tranexamic acid, for hemorrhage control.

Study Question: What are the causal relationships between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and body mass index (BMI)?

Summary Answer: Bidirectional Mendelian randomization analyses suggest that increased BMI is causal for PCOS while the reverse is not the case.

What Is Known Already: The contribution of obesity to the pathogenesis of PCOS is controversial. To date, published genetic studies addressing this question have generated conflicting results and have not utilized the full extent of known single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with body mass index (BMI).
