Objective: To determine if oral secretions (OS) can be used as a noninvasively collected body fluid, in lieu of tracheal aspirates (TA), to track respiratory status and predict bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) development in infants born <32 weeks.

Study Design: This was a retrospective, single center cohort study that included data and convenience samples from week-of-life (WoL) 3 from 2 independent preterm infant cohorts. Using previously banked samples, we applied our sample-sparing, high-throughput proteomics technology to compare OS and TA proteomes in infants born <32 weeks admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) (Cohort 1; n = 23 infants).

The cognitive abilities of humans are distinctive among primates, but their molecular and cellular substrates are poorly understood. We used comparative single-nucleus transcriptomics to analyze samples of the middle temporal gyrus (MTG) from adult humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, rhesus macaques, and common marmosets to understand human-specific features of the neocortex. Human, chimpanzee, and gorilla MTG showed highly similar cell-type composition and laminar organization as well as a large shift in proportions of deep-layer intratelencephalic-projecting neurons compared with macaque and marmoset MTG.

Macromastia is a common condition that can lead to physical pain, emotional burden, and behavioral impairment, with significant decrements in quality of life. Reduction mammaplasty offers the only effective treatment of symptomatic macromastia, and patients experience significant improvements in their physical and psychosocial health through surgical correction. Although symptoms typically arise during adolescence, most women seeking surgical intervention do not undergo reduction mammaplasty until their fifth decade of life.

A novel syndrome was suspected in individuals sharing short stature, microcephaly, distinctive facial features, and congenital anomalies. We enrolled 6 patients in an institutional review board approved study and evaluated medical history, findings, facial photographs, and test results across this original cohort. Four additional cases with similar findings were contributed by clinicians from outside institutions, bringing the number of reported cases to 10 and supporting the existence of this novel syndrome.

Such data are considered part of the "Big Data" available in intensive care units and are potentially suitable for health care-focused artificial intelligence research. Despite the richness in content of the physiological measurements, and the clinical implications shown by derived metrics based on those measurements, they have been largely neglected from previous attempts in harmonizing data collection and standardizing reporting of results as part of common data elements (CDEs) efforts.
