Objective: Temporary hemiepiphysiodesis (TH) is a very common technique for coronal angular deformity of the knee in children, especially non-idiopathic. However, there is currently a dearth of comparative research on the hinge eight-plate (HEP) and traditional eight-plate (TEP). This study aimed to assess the clinical effectiveness and implant-related complication rates of TH using TEP and HEP for non-idiopathic coronal angular deformity, as well as to identify clinical factors affecting correction velocity.

November 2024

Department of Pediatrics, State Key Laboratory of Experimental Hematology, National Clinical Research Center for Blood Diseases, Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Tianjin, China.

Article Synopsis
  • PDGFRB fusions in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) are rare, accounting for only 0.8% of tested cases.
  • A study involving 6457 patients over seven years identified 28 with PDGFRB-positive ALL, revealing a median age of 10 and a varied response to treatment.
  • The results highlighted that while chemotherapy with tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) improved complete remission rates, high levels of measurable residual disease (≥0.01%) were linked to poorer outcomes, suggesting a need for tailored treatment strategies to improve survival.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of Sophora japonica extract on alveolar bone mass in ovariectomized osteoporosis mice.

Methods: Six-week-old female non-pregnant wild-type C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into sham operation group, ovariectomy(OVX) group and OVX+Sophora japonica extract group. Ovaries of the mice in the OVX group and the OVX+Sophora japonica extract group were removed, and the mice in the OVX+Sophora japonica extract group were treated by Sophora japonica extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg, three times a week for 4 weeks; while mice of the other two groups were given an equal volume of normal saline at the same time.

World J Pediatr

January 2024

Department of Infectious Disease, Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, 3333 Binsheng Road, Binjiang District, Hangzhou, 310052, China.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the leading global cause of respiratory infections and is responsible for about 3 million hospitalizations and more than 100,000 deaths annually in children younger than 5 years, representing a major global healthcare burden. There is a great unmet need for new agents and universal strategies to prevent RSV infections in early life. A multidisciplinary consensus development group comprising experts in epidemiology, infectious diseases, respiratory medicine, and methodology aims to develop the current consensus to address clinical issues of RSV infections in children.

There is a lack of long-term data on the benefit of growth hormone (GH) treatment in Chinese children born small for gestational age (SGA). This study was conducted to assess the long-term efficacy and safety of GH treatment in children born SGA. One hundred and twenty prepubertal SGA children who did not achieve catch-up growth with height remained less than -2 standard deviations (SD) below gender-specific height were enrolled in this two-year, randomized, dose-comparative study followed by an extension study of up to 10 years.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how the phospholipase C (PLC) family contributes to the development and progression of acute T lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL).
  • Methods included analyzing cell death in T-ALL cells after using PLC inhibitors and assessing the influence of PLC expressions on patient survival using various statistical analyses.
  • Results indicated that certain T-ALL cell lines were sensitive to PLC inhibitors, while others were resistant, and high expression of specific PLC genes was linked to poor patient prognosis, suggesting these genes could be potential targets for therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the outcomes of 384 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and TCF3::PBX1 fusion, indicating that contemporary risk-directed treatments have improved survival rates.
  • Results show a 5-year event-free survival rate of 84.4% and overall survival of 88.9%, with male sex and high minimal residual disease (MRD) at day 46 being significant factors that negatively impact survival.
  • The presence of testicular leukemia at diagnosis is a strong independent risk factor, suggesting that patients with this condition may benefit from new therapeutic approaches such as molecular therapies or immunotherapy.

Extended vincristine and dexamethasone pulse therapy may not be necessary for children with TCF3-PBX1 positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Br J Haematol

November 2022

Department of Pediatrics, State Key Laboratory of Experimental Haematology, National Clinical Research Center for Blood Diseases, Haihe Laboratory of Cell Ecosystem, Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Tianjin, China.

The effect of prolonged pulse therapy with vincristine and dexamethasone (VD) during maintenance therapy on the outcome of paediatric patients with TCF3-PBX1 positive acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) remains uncertain. We conducted non-inferiority analysis of 263 newly diagnosed TCF3-PBX1 positive ALL children who were stratified and randomly assigned (1:1) to receive seven additional VD pulses (the control group) or not (the experimental group) in the CCCG-ALL-2015 clinical trial from January 2015 to December 2019 (ChiCTR-IPR-14005706). There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics between the two groups.

Objective: The current study aims to conduct a quantitative dynamic analysis of hip morphology using a computer-assisted design (CAD) model to evaluate the combined pelvic and femoral osteotomies in the treatment of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD).

Materials And Methods: CAD models of patients with unilateral LCPD treated by combined pelvic and proximal femoral osteotomies were established based on the data of CT scan, on which morphological parameters were measured. Shape difference analysis of normal hips was adopted to locate the most apparent displacement and the main strain on the surface of the proximal femur.
