Background: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of MP-AzeFlu (a novel intranasal formulation of azelastine hydrochloride and fluticasone propionate in a single spray) in children with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) and explore the importance of child symptom severity assessment in paediatric allergic rhinitis (AR) trials.

Methods: A total of 348 children (4-11 years) with moderate/severe SAR were randomized into a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 14-day, parallel-group trial. Efficacy was assessed by changes from baseline in reflective total nasal symptom score (rTNSS), reflective total ocular symptom score (rTOSS) and individual symptom scores over 14 days (children 6-11 years; n = 304), recorded by either children or caregivers.

Background: The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) is in the process of developing the EAACI Guidelines for Allergen Immunotherapy (AIT) for Allergic Asthma. We seek to critically assess the effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and safety of AIT in the management of allergic asthma.

Methods: We will undertake a systematic review, which will involve searching international biomedical databases for published, in progress and unpublished evidence.

Background And Objectives: Atopic dermatitis (AD) primarily affects infants and young children. Although topical corticosteroids (TCSs) are often prescribed, noncorticosteroid treatments are needed because compliance with TCSs is poor due to concerns about their side effects. In this longest and largest intervention study ever conducted in infants with mild-to-moderate AD, pimecrolimus 1% cream (PIM) was compared with TCSs.

Background: Five published meta-analyses (MAs) seem to prove the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy in allergic asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis.

Objective: We aimed to assess the consistency, magnitude, and robustness of the results of these MAs.

Methods: The data reported in the MAs were checked with the data reported in the original studies.

Objectives: To analyze in a retrospective cohort if sodium concentration in the rehydration fluids influence natremia in children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).

Study Design: Consecutive episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis admitted in a tertiary care referral center from 2000 to 2005. Rehydration was programmed for 48 hours with a 2-bag system.

Background: Evidence regarding the safety profile of drugs may vary depending on study sponsorship. We aimed to evaluate differences between studies funded by the pharmaceutical manufacturer of the drug (PF) and those with no pharmaceutical funding (NoPF) regarding the finding and interpretation of adverse effects of inhaled corticosteroids.

Methods: We assessed the safety reporting of inhaled corticosteroids in 275 PF and 229 NoPF studies identified by a MEDLINE search using prespecified criteria.

An eleven month-old child underwent a successful modified double switch operation for total correction of complete atrioventricular canal, double outlet right ventricle, noncommitted ventricular septal defect, pulmonary stenosis, common atrium and anomalous left superior vena cava to an unroofed coronary sinus. We describe the technique of modified double switch operation, utilizing an atrial switch combined with a Rastelli type reconstruction between the venous ventricle and the pulmonary artery.

Children with short bowel syndrome (SBS) undergo frequent operations, so they are at risk for sensitizing to latex. There have been isolated reports of sensitization to food in these children. In a cross-sectional study, we assessed sensitization to latex, cow's milk, and egg with skin prick tests (SPT) and serum-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) in 14 children with SBS.

Single recombinant latex allergens permit the study of the pattern of sensitization to individual allergens. We aimed to quantify the IgE-response to individual latex allergens in children sensitized to latex. The study group included 31 latex-sensitized children: 26 operated at least twice, 20 of them with spina bifida; two children with one operation and three atopic non-operated children.

Background: A genetic tendency to develop latex IgE responses in children with spina bifida has been suggested, but their degree of exposure to latex as well as the route and chronology for sensitization can be different from those of other children with multiple surgeries. The aim was to study the influence of the type of operation on the development of latex sensitization in children with myelomeningocele.

Methods: In 90 children with myelomeningocele operated with latex, data were collected about age, sex, family, and personal history of allergy, serum total IgE, presence of a ventricular-peritoneal (v-p) shunt, and number and duration of operations, classified as urological, orthopedic, on the v-p shunt, other neurosurgical, and others.

Background: Previous findings suggest that sensitization to latex in children with spina bifida is a dynamic process.

Objective: To study if changes appear in the sensitization status after withdrawal of latex.

Methods: We studied a consecutive sample of 68 children with spina bifida, by means of latex skin prick tests and quantification of serum latex-specific IgE on two separate occasions two years apart.

Background: Sensitization to latex has become a major problem in children with spina bifida. Life-threatening reactions may occur in these patients, therefore the search of latex sensitization must be an active task in all of these children.

Objective: To design an approach for the diagnosis of latex sensitization in children with spina bifida.

During 1991-1994, anonymous screening of newborn infants for maternal antibody to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was carried out in three regions of Spain: Valencia, Galicia and Sevilla. The newborn infants whose heel-stick blood eluates were satisfactory for HIV antibody tests were a consecutive series of 104 876, representing 99.3% of all newborn infants undergoing routine metabolic screening and estimated as comprising at least 98% of all births in the three regions.

Background: Some children with spina bifida who are sensitized to latex can have severe reactions, whereas others remain free of symptoms.

Objective: Our aim was to study the differences between these two groups of patients.

Material And Methods: In 110 consecutive children with spina bifida, we identified by means of skin prick tests and serum latex-specific IgE 32 patients sensitized to latex.

Background: Subgaleal abscesses and skull osteomyelitis are very uncommon since the introduction of antibiotics. Eikenella corrodens infection is extremely rare in childhood and has never been reported in calvarial osteomyelitis.

Methods: We present a previously healthy 9-year-old boy, with a history of frontal contusion without injury, who developed E corrodens osteomyelitis of the skull.

Background: Latex allergy is quite frequent in patients who have undergone multiple operations, such as children with spina bifida.

Objective: This investigation was carried to study the prevalence and risk factors associated with latex allergy in patients with spina bifida.

Methods: We studied 100 consecutive patients by skin prick tests and quantified specific IgE to latex with commercial antigens.
