Background: Surgical resection is integral for the treatment of neuroblastoma, the most common extracranial solid malignancy in children. Safely locating and resecting primary tumor and remote deposits of disease remains a significant challenge, resulting in high rates of complications and incomplete surgery, worsening outcomes. Intraoperative molecular imaging (IMI) uses targeted radioactive or fluorescent tracers to identify and visualize tumors intraoperatively.

Neuroblastoma accounts for 15% of pediatric cancer deaths, despite multimodal therapy including surgical resection. Current neuroblastoma rodent models are insufficient for studying the impact of surgery and combination treatments, largely due to the small size of mouse models. Human neuroblastoma SK-N-BE(2) cells were injected into the left adrenal gland of 5-6-week-old RNU homozygous nude rats.

Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased challenges to intimate partner violence (IPV) service provision. This study aimed to explore administrative perspectives on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on United States regional and national IPV service organizations.
Methods: We interviewed 35 administrators working within state, regional, or national organizations addressing IPV.

Aim: To evaluate associations between characteristics of simulated point-of-care cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training with simulated and actual intensive care unit (ICU) CPR performance, and with outcomes of children after in-hospital cardiac arrest.
Methods: This is a pre-specified secondary analysis of the ICU-RESUScitation Project; a prospective, multicentre cluster randomized interventional trial conducted in 18 ICUs from October 2016-March 2021. Point-of-care bedside simulations with real-time feedback to allow multidisciplinary ICU staff to practice CPR on a portable manikin were performed and quality metrics (rate, depth, release velocity, chest compression fraction) were recorded.

Introduction: Endoscopic surveillance guidelines for patients with repaired esophageal atresia (EA) rely primarily on expert opinion. Prior to embarking on a prospective EA surveillance registry, we sought to understand EA surveillance practices within the Eastern Pediatric Surgery Network (EPSN).
Methods: An anonymous, 23-question Qualtrics survey was emailed to 181 physicians (surgeons and gastroenterologists) at 19 member institutions.

Ventricular tachycardia and cardiac tumors are both extremely rare diagnoses in pediatric patients. We report a pediatric case of cardiac fibroma that was noted during the work up of ventricular tachycardia in a young patient concomitantly diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.

Degeneration of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is one of the most critical phenotypic changes of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of vision loss in the elderly. While cultured polarized RPE cells with original properties are valuable in models to study RPE biology and the consequences of genetic and/or pharmacological manipulations, the procedure to establish mouse primary PRE cell culture or pluripotent stem cell-derived RPE cells is time-consuming and yields a limited number of cells. Thus, establishing a mouse RPE culture system is highly desirable.

Background: The sensitivity and specificity of the leukocyte esterase test for the diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) are suboptimal. Recent studies have identified markers that appear to more accurately differentiate children with and without UTI. The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of these markers, which included CCL3, IL-8, CXCL1, TNF-alpha, IL-6, IFN-gamma, IL-17, IL-9, IL-2, and NGAL, in the diagnosis of UTI.

Renal functional reserve (RFR) is described as the difference between a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measured at baseline and after protein stimulation. The percent change in GFR after a protein load varies based on differences in experimental conditions, with the use of an oral meat protein stimulus and a creatinine clearance method to quantify GFR showing the greatest RFR. A decline in RFR has been found in numerous patient groups.

Background: To compare clinical history and measurements of fecal load on abdominal radiography (AR) in the prediction of urinary tract infection (UTI) recurrence in children.
Methods: We combined data from two multicenter longitudinal studies in which children less than 6 years of age with a first or second UTI were followed for recurrence of UTI. Two radiologists reviewed the scout abdominal radiographs of initial voiding cystourethrograms obtained at enrollment from children at two participating sites and measured stool visible in various parts of the colon.

Background: Young adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) are increasing in number with an increased risk for acute kidney injury. Little is known concerning the impact of non-recovery of kidney function for these patients. Therefore, we sought to explore the rates of acute kidney disease, persistent renal dysfunction, and their associations with adverse outcomes in young adults with CHD.

Purpose: Reproductive decline due to parental age has become a major barrier to fertility as couples have delayed having offspring into their thirties and forties. Advanced parental age is also associated with increased incidence of neurological and cardiovascular disease in offspring. Thus, elucidating the etiology of reproductive decline is of clinical importance.

A previous study suggested that use of adjuvant systemic corticosteroids reduces kidney scarring in children radiologically confirmed to have extensive pyelonephritis. Efficacy of corticosteroids for children with febrile urinary tract infection (UTI) has not been studied.

Lipocalins are a family of secreted adipokines which play important roles in various biological processes. Lipocalin-2 (LCN-2) has been shown to be involved in acute and chronic inflammation. This particular protein is critical in the pathogenesis of several diseases including cancer, diabetes, obesity, and multiple sclerosis.

Background: The specificity of the leukocyte esterase test (87%) is suboptimal. The objective of this study was to identify more specific screening tests that could reduce the number of children who unnecessarily receive antimicrobials to treat a presumed urinary tract infection (UTI).
Methods: Prospective cross-sectional study to compare inflammatory proteins in blood and urine samples collected at the time of a presumptive diagnosis of UTI.

Background: Influenza attacks the epithelium of the lung, causing cell death and disruption of the epithelial barrier leading to fluid buildup in the lung and impairment of gas exchange. Limited treatment options for severe influenza pneumonia prioritize the need for the discovery of effective therapies. IL-22 is a cytokine that promotes tissue integrity and has strong promise as a treatment option.

Historically, the approach to pediatric cranioplasty has been largely extrapolated from the treatment of adults. More recently, however, the intricacies of pediatric cranial reconstruction have become better understood, and the surgical management has been refined contemporaneously. Each patient's cranial defect bears a unique set of challenges and, as such, the choice of cranioplasty technique must be tailored accordingly.

Pediatric cholestasis often results from mechanical obstruction of the biliary tract or dysfunction in the processes of forming and excreting bile. Various genetic defects with resulting molecular inaccuracies are increasingly being recognized, often with specific clinical characteristics. Identifying of the molecular abnormality can enable implementation of timely, appropriate treatment in some affected individuals and provide prognostic indicators for both families and care teams.
