Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Pediatrics Boston Children's Hospital Boston Massachusetts USA.
Background: Decisions about who should perform tracheal intubation in academic settings must balance the needs of trainees to develop competency in pediatric intubation with patient safety. Airway protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic may have reduced opportunities for trainees, representing an opportunity to examine the impact of shifting laryngoscopy responsibilities away from trainees.
Methods: This observational study combined data from 11 pediatric emergency departments in North America participating in either the National Emergency Airway Registry for Children (NEAR4KIDS) or a national pediatric emergency medicine airway education collaborative.

Introduction: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a well-recognized therapy in children with refractory hypoxia. Different cannulas have been used with reported complications with placement, such as cardiac perforation, and multiple reports focusing on avoiding this. However, strategies to avoid hepatic vein cannulation and reposition when it occurs are not well described.

Here we examine recent evidence suggesting that many drugs and diet supplements (DS), experimental AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) agonists as well as energy-depleting stress, lead to decreases in anabolism, growth or proliferation, and potency of cultured oocytes, embryos, and stem cells in an AMPK-dependent manner. Surprising data for DS and drugs that have some activity as AMPK agonists in in vitro experiments show possible toxicity. This needs to be balanced against a preponderance of evidence in vivo that these drugs and DS are beneficial for reproduction.

This review is a response to the Fellows Forum on testing 2% oxygen for best culture of human blastocysts (J Ass Reprod Gen 34:303-8, 1; J Ass Reprod Gen 34:309-14, 2) prior to embryo transfer. It is a general analysis in support of the position that an understanding of stem cell physiology and responses to oxygen are necessary for optimization of blastocyst culture in IVF and to enhance reproductive success in fertile women.

In this study, we compared the effect of isoflurane and desflurane on the posterior tibial somatosensory evoked potential recorded by scalp electrodes during correction of idiopathic scoliosis in pediatric patients. Depth of sedation was controlled by maintaining bispectral index (BIS) at 60 throughout the study. Comparison of patients breathing desflurane and isoflurane showed an evoked cortical amplitude (N37-P45) of 0.
