Introduction: Seasonal influenza poses significant societal costs, including illness, mortality, and reduced work productivity. Vaccination remains the most effective strategy for preventing the disease, yet vaccination rates in the United States fall below 50% for adults. Understanding the factors influencing vaccination decisions is crucial for designing interventions to improve uptake.

Lipoblastoma Arising in the Head and Neck: A Clinicopathologic Analysis of 20 Cases.

Background: Lipoblastomas (LPBs) are benign adipocytic neoplasms believed to recapitulate the development of embryonal fat.

Methods: We investigated the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 20 lipoblastomas arising in the head and neck in 18 patients.

Results: Patients included 6 males and 12 females (1:2 ratio) with age at diagnosis ranging from 4 months to 28 years.

Given the high evolutionary conservation of pain, investigative approaches from Drosophila mutagenesis to human Mendelian genetics have aided our understanding of the maladaptive plasticity underlying NeuP. We analyzed clinical and histopathologic data of 97 pediatric patients who underwent excision of dermoid cysts. On review, 16.5% of the sample population demonstrated localized chronic inflammatory changes, including the presence of giant cells and epithelial disruption.

Adipocytic tumors in Children: A contemporary review.

Adipocytic neoplasms in the pediatric population demonstrate a different histologic spectrum and frequency than in adults. The vast majority of these tumors are benign, with lipoma being the most common entity. The identification of signature cytogenetic and molecular alterations for certain lesions, such as PLAG1 gene rearrangement in lipoblastoma and FUS-DDIT3 fusion in myxoid liposarcoma, has been helpful in approaching these neoplasms and aiding in confirming the diagnosis.

Natural Killer Cells Degenerate Intact Sensory Afferents following Nerve Injury.

Sensory axons degenerate following separation from their cell body, but partial injury to peripheral nerves may leave the integrity of damaged axons preserved. We show that an endogenous ligand for the natural killer (NK) cell receptor NKG2D, Retinoic Acid Early 1 (RAE1), is re-expressed in adult dorsal root ganglion neurons following peripheral nerve injury, triggering selective degeneration of injured axons. Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is mediated by two major exotoxins, toxin A (TcdA) and toxin B (TcdB), that damage the colonic epithelial barrier and induce inflammatory responses. The function of the colonic vascular barrier during CDI has been relatively understudied. Here we report increased colonic vascular permeability in CDI mice and elevated vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A), which was induced in vivo by infection with TcdA- and/or TcdB-producing C.

To date, mutations in 15 actin- or microtubule-associated genes have been associated with the cortical malformation lissencephaly and variable brainstem hypoplasia. During a multicenter review, we recognized a rare lissencephaly variant with a complex brainstem malformation in three unrelated children. We searched our large brain-malformation databases and found another five children with this malformation (as well as one with a less severe variant), analyzed available whole-exome or -genome sequencing data, and tested ciliogenesis in two affected individuals.

Treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis among people living with HIV.

Purpose Of Review: This review aims to describe the key principles in treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) in people living with HIV, including early access to timely diagnostics, linkage into care, TB treatment strategies including the use of new and repurposed drugs, co-management of HIV disease, and treatment complications and programmatic support to optimize treatment outcomes. These are necessary strategies to decrease the likelihood of poor treatment outcomes including lower treatment completion rates and higher mortality.

Recent Findings: Diagnosis of drug-resistant TB is the gateway into care; yet understanding the utility and the limitations of genotypic methods in this population is necessary.

Collective Shape Actuation of Polymer Double Emulsions by Solvent Evaporation.

We demonstrate that the shape actuation of water-in-oil-in-water double emulsion droplets can be achieved by controlling solvent evaporation in a model system, where the oil phase consists of hydrophobic homopolymer/amphiphilic block copolymer/solvent. A gradient of interfacial tension is created in the polymer shell, which drives significant deformation of the droplets in constant volume. The deformed droplets recover to their initial shape spontaneously, and shape actuation of droplets can be further tuned by osmotic pressure.

Initiation, scale-up and outcomes of the Cambodian National MDR-TB programme 2006-2016: hospital and community-based treatment through an NGO-NTP partnership.

Introduction: Prolonged inpatient multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) treatment for all patients is not sustainable for high-burden settings, but there is limited information on community-based treatment programme outcomes for MDR-TB.

Methods: The Cambodian Health Committee, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), launched the Cambodian MDR-TB programme in 2006 in cooperation with the National Tuberculosis Program (NTP) including a community-based treatment option as a key programme component. The programme was transferred to NTP oversight in 2011 with NGO clinical management continuing.

Racial variations in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation use following congenital heart surgery.

Objectives: Previous studies demonstrate racial and ethnic disparities among children undergoing congenital heart surgery. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used to support critically ill children after congenital heart surgery and improve survival. Thus, racial or ethnic variations in postoperative ECMO use following congenital heart surgery may be associated with racial/ethnic disparities in hospital survival.
