It is important to maintain confidence in the risk and benefit balance of major caries-preventive programs using fluoride. The ongoing debate about potential effects of early-life exposures to fluoride on cognitive neurodevelopment requires high-quality scientific evidence. This study aimed to investigate the potential effects of fluoride exposure on cognitive neurodevelopment assessed with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale 4th edition (WAIS-IV) in an Australian population-based sample.

Children requiring veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) or cardiac surgery often undergo cervical cannulation or carotid artery clamping, which can interrupt cerebral circulation. Inadequate collateral flow through the circle of Willis (CoW) may lead to cerebral ischaemia within the vascular territory and/or watershed regions. Pre-cannulation survey of the CoW using transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound may be performed to predict and plan neuroprotection.

Article Synopsis
  • Anti-GD2 antibody therapy offers benefits for neuroblastoma patients, but its effectiveness is limited by the tumor's immunosuppressive environment.
  • Research shows that using copper chelation can enhance this therapy by improving immune responses, specifically by boosting the activity of neutrophils that help fight the tumor.
  • The study suggests repurposing the approved copper chelator Cuprior as a safe and effective method to improve the outcomes of anti-GD2 therapy in neuroblastoma patients.

Aim: To investigate the incidence, risk factors and outcomes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bloodstream infections (P-BSI) in Queensland children aged 0-18 years.

Methods: A retrospective data-linkage study was conducted of P-BSI identified by Pathology Queensland laboratories from resident Queensland children admitted to publicly-funded Queensland Hospitals between 2000 and 2019. We estimated age-standardised incidence of P-BSI and case fatality ratios (48 h, 7-, 30- and 90-day all-cause mortality from the date of the blood culture collection).

Background: Acute application of adjunctive negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) significantly improves time to re-epithelialization in pediatric burn patients. This adjunctive treatment has not yet been broadly or routinely adopted as a standard primary burns dressing strategy. The Implementation of Negative PRessurE for acute Pediatric burns (INPREP) trial will implement and evaluate the impact of adjunctive NPWT in parallel with co-designed implementation strategies and resources across four major pediatric hospitals.

Aim: To compare the device-measured physical activity behaviours of preschool children with typical motor development to those with probable developmental coordination disorder (pDCD) and at risk for developmental coordination disorder (DCDr).

Method: A total of 497 preschool children (4-5 years) in the Coordination and Activity Tracking in CHildren (CATCH) study completed repeated motor assessments and wore an ActiGraph GT3X on the right hip at baseline for 1 week. We calculated physical activity metrics from raw accelerometer data using a validated random forest classification machine learning model for preschool-age children.

Background: The cause of acute paediatric hepatitis of unknown aetiology (2022) has not been established despite extensive investigation.

Objective: To summarise the evidence for and against a causal role for human adenovirus (HAdv), adeno-associated virus 2 (AAV-2) and SARS-CoV-2 in outbreaks of paediatric hepatitis in 2022.

Methods: We appraised and summarised relevant evidence for each of the Bradford Hill criteria for causality using quantitative (statistical modelling) and qualitative (narrative coherence) approaches.

Aim: We sought to determine the degree of agreement between clinical and laboratory methods for diagnosing scabies in school-aged children.

Methods: Clinical information and samples were collected from children aged 7 months to 14 years attending educational institutions in Auckland, New Zealand. Two methods determined scabies status: the International Alliance for the Control of Scabies clinical criteria (IACS) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR).

Background: Little population-based evidence exists about prevalence of lifetime disclosure and non-disclosure of child sexual abuse (CSA). Evidence is lacking about disclosure by girls and women compared with boys and men, and gender diverse individuals. It is unclear if disclosure is more common in contemporary society, and if disclosure is influenced by abuse severity and perpetrator type.

Objective: Previous retrospective studies have reported vigabatrin-associated brain abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging (VABAM), although clinical impact is unknown. We evaluated the association between vigabatrin and predefined brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) changes in a large homogenous tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) cohort and assessed to what extent VABAM-related symptoms were reported in TSC infants.

Methods: The Dutch TSC Registry and the EPISTOP cohort provided retrospective and prospective data from 80 TSC patients treated with vigabatrin (VGB) before the age of 2 years and 23 TSC patients without VGB.

"You need to be supported": An integrative review of nurses' experiences after death in neonatal and paediatric intensive care.

Aust Crit Care

December 2024

End-of-Life Advisory Panel, Australian College of Critical Care Nurses, Banora Point, NSW, Australia; Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Queensland Children's Hospital, South Brisbane, QLD, Australia.

Background: The death of a child can have a profound impact on critical care nurses, shaping their professional practice and personal lives in diverse, enduring ways. Whilst end-of-life care is recognised as a core component of critical care nursing practice and a research priority, evidence about nurses' experiences after death in neonatal and paediatric intensive care is poorly understood.

Research Question: What is the experience of the nurse after death of a patient in neonatal and/or paediatric intensive care?

Method: Following registration with Open Science Framework, an integrative review of the empirical literature was undertaken.

Survival of the fittest? Peak oxygen uptake and all-cause mortality among older adults in Norway.

Prog Cardiovasc Dis

December 2024

Cardiac Exercise Research Group (CERG), Department of Circulation and Medical Imaging, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim, Norway; Centre for Research on Exercise, Physical Activity and Health, School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels necessary for older adults (70-77 years) to reduce their risk of death, hypothesizing that higher peak oxygen uptake (VO) would be protective.
  • The research included a cohort of 1,565 older adults in Norway, who underwent VO testing and were monitored for all-cause mortality over five years.
  • Results indicated that lower VO levels (less than 26.5 mL/kg/min for men and 22.2 mL/kg/min for women) significantly increased the risk of death, emphasizing the need for maintaining or improving CRF in later life.

Article Synopsis
  • * Using a large Queensland cohort, the research found that 10.1% of participants had been reported for child maltreatment, with 3.3% admitted and 4.8% presenting at emergency departments for CMDs.
  • * The results indicate that all forms of substantiated child maltreatment significantly correlated with increased risk for CMDs, particularly anxiety and depression, suggesting a need for better screening for maltreatment in hospital settings.
