Airborne fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) are often generated through widely-used thermal processes such as the combustion of fuels or the thermal decomposition of waste. Residents near Superfund sites are exposed to PM through the inhalation of windblown dust, ingestion of soil and sediments, and inhalation of emissions from the on-site thermal treatment of contaminated soils. Epidemiological evidence supports a link between exposure to airborne PM and an increased risk of cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.

Rare genetic disorders that cause BDNF haploinsufficiency, such as WAGR syndrome, 11p deletion, and 11p inversion, serve as models for understanding the role of BDNF in human energy balance and neurocognition. Patients with BDNF haploinsufficiency or inactivating mutations of the BDNF receptor exhibit hyperphagia, childhood-onset obesity, intellectual disability, and impaired nociception. Prader-Willi, Smith-Magenis, and ROHHAD syndromes are separate genetic disorders that do not directly affect the BDNF locus but share many similar clinical features with BDNF haploinsufficiency, and BDNF insufficiency is believed to possibly contribute to the pathophysiology of each of these conditions.

We evaluated the diagnostic utility of the three modalities of three-dimensional rotational angiography (3DRA): rotational angiography (RA), multiplanar reformat (MPR) and three-dimensional angiographic reconstruction (3D-R) in pediatric cardiac catheterization. The 3DRA studies were classified by anatomy of interest based on our injection protocol: pulmonary arteries (PA), aorta, cavopulmonary connection (CPC), and others. Retrospective review of 3DRA images by two reviewers for each modality was conducted with grading as inferior, similar, or superior in comparison with the diagnostic quality of fixed-plane angiography (FPA).

Objective: Lung injury activates multiple pro-inflammatory pathways, including neutrophils, epithelial, and endothelial injury, and coagulation factors leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Low-dose methylprednisolone therapy (MPT) improved oxygenation and ventilation in early pediatric ARDS without altering duration of mechanical ventilation or mortality. The contribution of genetic variation to urinary tract infection (UTI) risk in children with vesicoureteral reflux is largely unknown. The innate immune system, which includes antimicrobial peptides, such as the α-defensins, encoded by DEFA1A3, is important in preventing UTIs but has not been investigated in the vesicoureteral reflux population. We used quantitative real-time PCR to determine DEFA1A3 DNA copy numbers in 298 individuals with confirmed UTIs and vesicoureteral reflux from the Randomized Intervention for Children with Vesicoureteral Reflux (RIVUR) Study and 295 controls, and we correlated copy numbers with outcomes.

In July 2014, the Committee on Infectious Diseases (COID) updated their guidance on the use of palivizumab, recommending against use in preterm infants 29 to 35 weeks' gestational age (wGA). A primary data source cited to support this significant change was the low respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) hospitalization rate observed in the subpopulation of preterm (<37 wGA) infants evaluated from 2000 to 2005 through the New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN). Environmental ultrafine particulate matter (PM) is capable of inducing airway injury, while the detailed molecular mechanisms remain largely unclear. Here, we demonstrate pivotal roles of autophagy in regulation of inflammation and mucus hyperproduction induced by PM containing environmentally persistent free radicals in human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells and in mouse airways. PM was endocytosed by HBE cells and simultaneously triggered autophagosomes, which then engulfed the invading particles to form amphisomes and subsequent autolysosomes.

Sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) is a key transcription factor that regulates genes involved in the de novo lipid synthesis and glycolysis pathways. The structure, turnover and transactivation potential of SREBP-1c are regulated by macronutrients and hormones via a cascade of signalling kinases. Using MS, we have identified serine 73 as a novel glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) phosphorylation site in the rat SREBP-1c purified from McA-RH7777 hepatoma cells.
