Recent studies suggest abnormal microRNA (miRNA) expression may have potential prognostic value in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In this systematic review, we searched different databases (PubMed, ASH, ASCO, and SIOP) for studies published from 2008 to 2018 that evaluated the prognostic impact of miRNAs in childhood ALL. We also used DIANA-miRPath v3.

Structural studies of membrane proteins have been hurdled by their difficulty for expression in heterogeneous expression systems due to their intrinsically strong hydrophobicity and requirements for association with other cellular membranes. This study aims to design a construct for expression of membrane proteins. Because of its outstanding interest in HIV-1 vaccine design, transmembrane gp41 amino acid residue 662-723 was chosen as a representative membrane protein.

The incidence of pediatric cancer is lower than that of adult cancer worldwide. However, the former has detrimental side effects on the health of individuals, even after the cancer is cured, due to the impact of treatment on development. Recently, correlations have been made between the gut microbiome and cancer in several studies but only on adult participants.

Aggresomes are inclusion bodies for misfolded/aggregated proteins. Despite the role of misfolded/aggregated proteins in neurological disorders, their role in cancer pathogenesis is poorly defined. In the current study we aimed to investigate whether aggresomes-positivity could be used to improve the disease subclassification and prognosis prediction of pediatric medulloblastoma.

The 13th African continental meeting of the international society of paediatric oncology, held on 6-9 March 2019 in Cairo, was organised in collaboration with the Children Cancer Hospital (57357) in Egypt and the global parents' organisation (Childhood Cancer International) and supported by a large international faculty. With 629 delegates from 37 countries (24 African), this was the largest forum of healthcare professionals focused on children and young people with cancer in Africa to showcase advances and discuss further improvements. Three targeted workshops, on nursing care, pharmacy and nutrition, attracted large numbers and catalysed new collaborative initiatives in supportive care studies, extended roles for pharmacists in quality control and care delivery and addressed malnutrition concurrently with cancer treatment.

During the last decade, metaproteomics has provided a better understanding and functional characterization of the microbiome. A large body of evidence now reveals interspecies, species of bacteria-host interactions, via the secreted modulatory microbial protein "metaproteome". Although high-throughput state-of-art mass spectrometry has recently empowered metaproteomics, its profile remains unclear, and, most importantly, the exact consequences and underlying mechanism of these protein molecules on the host are insufficiently understood.

The aim of the present study was to demonstrate the effect of inhalation-flow, inhalation-volume and number of inhalations on aerosol-delivery of inhaled-salbutamol from two different dry powder inhalers (DPIs) in both healthy-subjects and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Relative pulmonary-bioavailability and systemic-bioavailability of inhaled-salbutamol, delivered by Diskus and Aerolizer, was determined in 24-COPD patients and 24-healthy subjects. The healthy-subjects and the COPD-patients participated in the study for 7 days in which they received 4 study doses of 200 μg salbutamol (one slow-inhalation, two slow-inhalations, one fast-inhalation, and two fast-inhalations) in four alternative days with 24 hr washout period after each dose.

Althoughpediatric tumors represent less than 1% of all new cancer diagnoses, they still rank the second in the list of disease-related morbidity and mortality in children in the US. Combining biomarker-driven targeted therapy with individualized genomic analysis is the principle of precision medicine trials. The cellular-mesenchymal-epithelial transition (c-MET) factor receptor signaling pathway plays an important role in many physiological functions including embryological development.

Successful T cell immunotherapy for brain cancer requires that the T cells can access tumour tissues, but this has been difficult to achieve. Here we show that, in contrast to inflammatory brain diseases such as multiple sclerosis, where endothelial cells upregulate ICAM1 and VCAM1 to guide the extravasation of pro-inflammatory cells, cancer endothelium downregulates these molecules to evade immune recognition. By contrast, we found that cancer endothelium upregulates activated leukocyte cell adhesion molecule (ALCAM), which allowed us to overcome this immune-evasion mechanism by creating an ALCAM-restricted homing system (HS).

Background: Biobanks have become a powerful tool that fosters biomedical research. The success of biobanks depends upon people's perception and willingness to donate their samples for research. This is the first biorepository in Egypt, hence, little is known about the beliefs and attitudes of parents toward participation.

Aggresomes are transient microtubule-dependent inclusion bodies that sequester misfolded proteins and are ultimately removed by autophagy. Here we report the generation of a choroid plexus carcinoma cell line; Children's Cancer Hospital Egypt (CCHE)-45, which is characterized by the constitutive formation of aggresomes. When examining the autophagy pathway as the main route for aggresomes clearance, CCHE-45 cells displayed increased autophagy flux mediated by MAP1LC3B.

Over the last two decades, harnessing the power of the immune system has shown substantial promise. Specifically, the successes that chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells achieved in the treatment of hematologic malignancies provided a concrete platform for further development in solid tumors. Considering that the latter contribute more than three quarters of cancer-related deaths in humans makes it clear that solid tumors represent the larger medical challenge, but also the larger developmental promise in the market.

Background: Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a small round blue cell malignant tumor, representing 7% of childhood malignancies, and over 50% of all soft tissue sarcomas. Cyclophosphamide (CPA) is a prodrug and is the mainstay of RMS treatment. CYP2B6 is a highly polymorphic drug metabolizing enzyme involved in CPA bioactivation.

Research on childhood diseases represents a great global challenge. This challenge is maximized in both childhood cancer disciplines and developing world. In this paper, we aim at describing our institution experience in starting a structured childhood cancer research program in one of the developing countries in a short time based on philanthropic efforts.

Background: Results from case-control studies have shown an increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in young children born by caesarean delivery, and prelabour caesarean delivery in particular; however, an association of method of delivery with childhood leukaemia subtypes has yet to be established. We therefore did a pooled analysis of data to investigate the association between childhood leukaemia and caesarean delivery.
Methods: We pooled data from 13 case-control studies from the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium done in nine countries (Canada, Costa Rica, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, and the USA) for births from 1970-2013.

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) accounts for 2-5% of all pediatric renal malignancies, and is known for its propensity to metastasize to bone and other sites. We are reporting two cases with bilateral CCSK that were diagnosed at our institution. One patient initially presented with bilateral renal masses, as well as pulmonary, hepatic and bone metastasis; while other present only with bilateral masses with no evident distant metastasis.

Background: Low grade gliomas are the most common brain tumor in children. Tandem duplication involving the KIAA1549 and the BRAF kinase genes results in a gene fusion that has been recently characterized in a subset of low grade glioma While there is no clear evidence that the KIAA1549-BRAF gene fusion has an effect on prognosis, it is an attractive target for therapy development and as a diagnostic tool.
Methods: In the current study we examine the prevalence of KIAA1549-BRAF gene fusion in pediatric patients diagnosed with low grade glioma in the Egyptian population and its relationship to clinical and histological subtypes.
