Copper homeostasis and Cuprotosis: Exploring novel therapeutic strategies for connective tissue diseases.

Int Immunopharmacol

January 2025

Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, Chifeng Cancer Hospital, Chifeng 024000, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Electronic address:

Copper is an indispensable element for human health, with its balance being critical to prevent the onset of diseases, particularly those affecting connective tissues. Imbalances in copper levels can lead to pathological alterations. Research indicates that copper supplements and chelators hold promise for the treatment of certain conditions, yet the precise mechanisms by which copper imbalances and the cell death mechanism known as cuprotosis contribute to connective tissue diseases remain elusive.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) combined with flexible vacuum-assisted ureteral access sheath (FV-UAS) versus extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for the management of 1-2 cm lower pole renal calculi (LPC) in obese patients.

Patients And Methods: This prospective, randomized study included 149 obese patients with 1-2 cm LPC. Patients were allocated into two groups: 76 patients underwent RIRS with FV-UAS, and 73 patients received ESWL.

Muscarinic receptor drug trihexyphenidyl can alter growth of mesenchymal glioblastoma .

Front Pharmacol

September 2024

Molecular and Experimental Surgery, Clinic for General-, Visceral -, Vascular- and Transplantation Surgery, Medical Faculty and University Hospital Magdeburg, Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain tumor, with a subtype called mesenchymal (MES-GBM) known for its resistance to treatment.
  • Trihexyphenidyl (THP), an existing medication, has been shown to effectively inhibit the growth and survival of MES-GBM cells while sparing non-tumor cells.
  • The study suggests THP's potential for repurposing as a cancer treatment, but more research is needed to clarify its mechanisms of action and establish optimal treatment protocols.

Ovary microcystic stromal tumor (MCST) is an extremely rare subtype of sex cord-stromal neoplasm, and only 57 cases have been reported. We herein report a unique case of ovarian MCST with positive nestin expression in a 39-year-old Chinese woman. The tumor showed microcystic stromal histological structures and characteristically expressed the CD10, WT-1, and Ki67 proteins.

Autophagy machinery in glioblastoma: The prospect of cell death crosstalk and drug resistance with bioinformatics analysis.

Cancer Lett

January 2024

Department of Pharmacology, National University of Singapore, NUS Centre for Cancer Research, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, 16 Medical Drive, Singapore, 117600, Singapore. Electronic address:

Brain tumors are common malignancies with high mortality and morbidity in which glioblastoma (GB) is a grade IV astrocytoma with heterogeneous nature. The conventional therapeutics for the GB mainly include surgery and chemotherapy, however their efficacy has been compromised due to the aggressiveness of tumor cells. The dysregulation of cell death mechanisms, especially autophagy has been reported as a factor causing difficulties in cancer therapy.

Autophagy and cancer drug resistance in dialogue: Pre-clinical and clinical evidence.

Cancer Lett

August 2023

Department of General Surgery and Institute of Precision Diagnosis and Treatment of Digestive System Tumors, Carson International Cancer Center, Shenzhen University General Hospital, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong, 518055, China. Electronic address:

The emergence of drug resistance is a major challenge for oncologists. Resistance can be categorized as acquired or intrinsic; the alteration of several biological mechanisms contributes to both intrinsic and acquired resistance. Macroautophagy/autophagy is the primary process in eukaryotes for the degradation of macromolecules and organelles.

Medical electronic endoscope is one of the indispensable tools in medical diagnosis and treatment. With the development of science and technology, electronic endoscope has higher safety and accuracy than traditional optical endoscope. Due to the sophisticated construction and high price, hospitals spend a lot of money on maintenance every year.

Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a major type of bladder cancer with a high incidence worldwide, resulting in a great disease burden. Treatment and surveillance are the most important part of NIMBC management. In 2018, we issued "Treatment and surveillance for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer in China: an evidence-based clinical practice guideline".

It was reported that amentoflavone (AF) had anti-tumor ability. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the role of AF in endometrial cancer as well as to discuss its underlying mechanism. The viability, proliferation, and apoptosis of endometrial carcinoma cells (KLE) with AF administration were detected by methyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay, clone formation, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) dUTP Nick-End Labeling (TUNEL) assays.

Objective: To study the safety and feasibility of transurethral bladder lesion mucosal en bloc resection with 2 μm laser for cystitis glandularis.

Methods: From July 2018 to July 2019, 58 patients with cystitis glandularis received surgical treatment were selected. All patients in this study were randomly divided into experimental group (transurethral 2 μm laser bladder lesion mucosal en bloc resection) and control group (traditional transurethral resection of bladder lesion mucosal).

Eriocitrin, a lemons flavanone, exhibits several biological properties, antiproliferative, and proapoptotic effects. However, its molecular mechanical action is not entirely clarified. Oxidative stress causes abnormal stimulation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) signaling has been strongly connected with the ruling of cell survival and apoptosis of cancer cells.

Purpose: To investigate the safety and efficacy of CT-guided I radioactive seed implantation (RSI) as a salvage therapy for recurrent head and neck squamous carcinoma (rHNSC) after external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) or surgery.

Materials And Methods: This is a multicenter retrospective study of 113 patients (83 males; median age 57 years) with rHNSC who underwent CT-guided I RSI between February 2003 and December 2017. Of the included patients, 107 patients previously received EBRT and 65 patients received surgery and all were ineligible or rejected for salvage surgery and/or repeat EBRT.

Background: Cord Blood (CB) has been considered a promising source of natural killer (NK) cells for cellular immunotherapy. However, it is difficult to expand the large numbers of highly pure NK cells from CB without cell sorting and feeder cells/multiple cytokines. In this study, we try to develop a simple, safe and economical method for ex vivo expansion and purification of NK cells from CB without cell sorting and feeder cells/multiple cytokines.

Background And Objectives: The exosomes released by mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in classical FBS-containing media have been demonstrated as an alternative, cell-free therapy in various diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It has been found that the function of exosomes is affected by culture condition. We previously developed a serum-free, xeno-free and chemically defined medium, and umbilical cord-derived MSCs in this medium retained the immunosuppressive capability.

Objective: To study the expression of G9a in human breast cancer, its association with the clinicopathological characteristics of breast cancer, and its effect on the proliferation of breast cancer cells.

Methods: A total of 122 specimens of breast cancer tissues and 61 adjacent normal tissues resected between October, 2016 and October, 2017 were obtained from the Tissue Bank of Ningxia Medical University General Hospital. Immunohistochemistry and real-time PCR were used to detect the expression of G9a in the breast cancer tissues.
