Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the impact of limited English proficiency (LEP) on breast cancer screening rates among women in the U.S.
  • LEP women (5.7% of the sample) showed significantly lower rates of screening mammograms (78% vs. 90%) and faced greater barriers to healthcare access.
  • Spanish-speaking women, in particular, were identified as a vulnerable subgroup with even lower probabilities of receiving screenings compared to those who speak other languages.

Cancers (Basel)

Department of Surgery, University of California, San Francisco, CA 94143, USA.

Biliary tract cancer consists of cholangiocarcinoma (CC) and gallbladder cancer (GBC). When resectable, surgery provides the best chance at long-term survival. Unfortunately, surgery for these tumors is associated with long operative times, high morbidities, and prolonged hospital stays.

Survivors of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Repair Face Barriers to Long-Term Follow-Up Care.

J Surg Res

November 2021

Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, Riley Hospital for Children, Indianapolis, Indiana. Electronic address:

Background: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) carries high morbidity and mortality, and survivors commonly have neurodevelopmental, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary sequela requiring multidisciplinary care well beyond repair. We predict that following hospitalization for repair, CDH survivors face many barriers to receiving future medical care.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of all living CDH patients between ages 0 to 12 years who underwent repair at Riley Hospital for Children (RHC) from 2010 through 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare surgical outcomes between fellowship-trained (FT) surgeons and general surgeons (GS) performing appendectomies in an inner-city hospital over nine years.
  • Despite no significant differences in demographics or major complications, FT surgeons had lower rates of post-operative ileus, conversions to open surgery, and shorter lengths of hospital stay.
  • Ultimately, having fellowship training in laparoscopic surgery was linked to better outcomes regarding ileus and length of stay, with diabetes being the only major complication risk factor identified.

Pylephlebitis is an uncommon complication of uncontrolled intra-abdominal infection that is associated with high morbidity and mortality. We present our experience with a unique case of cecal diverticulitis and septic thrombophlebitis of the superior mesenteric vein that was promptly diagnosed with high-resolution imaging and blood cultures. Antibiotic and anticoagulation therapy was instituted on confirming the diagnosis with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to control the infection and prevent propagation of the thrombus.

Benign adrenal hemangiomas may mimic metastases on PET.

Clin Nucl Med

November 2013

From the *Department of Surgery, University of Illinois at Chicago Metropolitan Group Hospitals Program; †Department of Radiology, Division of Nuclear Medicine, and ‡Department of Pathology, Creticos Cancer Center at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center; and §Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, IL.

CT or MRI are utilized in the initial evaluation of adrenal incidentalomas; however, overlap exists between benign and malignant lesions on these examinations. The American College of Radiology recommends PET scans to complement CT and MRI for patients with adrenal masses and a moderate-to-high likelihood of neoplastic disease. We present images of a PET-avid adrenal lesion in a patient with pulmonary and pancreatic neoplasms that mimicked metastasis, but was found to be a benign adrenal hemangioma on surgical resection.

Background: We aimed to evaluate our learning curve comparing surgical time of laparoendoscopic single-site (LESS) banding with multiport laparoscopy.

Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data comparing our first 48 LESS bands with our first 50 multiport laparoscopic bands at our institution. We then compared the first 24 LESS bands with the last 24 bands.

Ischemic injury to the rectum is rare owing to its rich vascular supply, and is seldom seen in clinical practice. Risk factors include major vascular occlusive disease, disruption of collateral circulation, and low flow state. It is of paramount importance to diagnose this entity early in its course.
