Introduction: The purpose of this study was to review rates of infection after civilian ballistic fractures and assess the effect of early antibiotic administration (EAA) on infection rates.
Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study done at an urban Level 1 Trauma Center. Patients ages 16 years and older with ballistic orthopaedic extremity injuries between May 2018 and December 2020 were enrolled.

Background: Functional electrical stimulation-assisted rowing (FES rowing) is a rehabilitation exercise used to prevent disuse osteoporosis, which is common in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, its effect on bone loss prevention varied in SCI patients, potentially due to inconsistent loading. This study investigates the effect of ergometer setup and rowing speed on lower extremity loading during rowing.

Background: Traumatic peroneal tendon dislocation (PTD) is known to occur with pilon and calcaneus fractures, however, literature describing PTD in concurrence with injury to the talus remains limited.
Methods: This was a retrospective review of adult patients with operatively treated talus fractures treated at a level I academic trauma center between 2007 and 2021. Charts, radiographs, and advanced imaging, when available, were reviewed for patient demographics, injury characteristics, and complications.

Purpose: To evaluate the psychometric properties of performance and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for custom ankle-foot orthosis (AFOs) users.
Materials And Methods: Current AFO users completed two assessments one week apart; new AFO users completed an assessment before device delivery and at one- and two-months post-delivery.
Results: Seventy current and 31 new users consented and provided data.

Background: Understanding midfoot joint kinetics is valuable for improved treatment of foot pathologies. Segmental foot kinetics cannot currently be obtained in a standard gait lab without the use of multiple force plates or a pedobarographic plate overlaid with a force plate due to the single ground reaction force (GRF) vector.
Research Question: Can an algorithm be created to distribute the GRF into multiple segmental vectors that will allow for calculation of accurate midfoot and ankle moments?
Methods: 20 pediatric subjects (10 typically developing, 10 with foot pathology) underwent multi-segment foot gait analysis using the Milwaukee Foot Model.

Background: Clinical gait analysis plays a pivotal role in diagnosing and treating walking impairments. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) offer a low-cost, portable, and practical alternative to traditional gait analysis equipment, making these techniques more accessible beyond specialized clinics. Previous work and algorithms developed for specific clinical populations, like in individuals with Parkinson's disease, often do not translate effectively to other groups, such as stroke survivors, who exhibit significant variability in their gait patterns.

To identify baseline characteristics that predict visual outcomes after a lapse in treatment among patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) who received intravitreal antivascular endothelial growth factor injections. In this retrospective study, patients with DME who had lapses in treatment of 3 months or longer were separated into 2 groups (stable vision, n = 201; vision loss, n = 61) based on an Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study vision loss threshold of 10 letters. Stepwise backward logistic regression was used to analyze baseline factors associated with vision loss and to create a predictive algorithm.

Background: In the United States, 1 in 11 people receive primary care from a federally qualified health center (FQHC). Text messaging interventions (TMIs) are accessible ways to deliver health information, engage patients, and improve health outcomes in the health center setting.
Objective: We aimed to evaluate the impact of a TMI implemented with a group visit (GV) intervention among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at FQHCs on patient-reported outcomes and clinical outcomes based on patient TMI engagement.

Background: Employment plays an important role in the maintenance of mental and physical health. Losing a job creates emotional distress, which can, in turn, interfere with effective job seeking. Thus, a program for job seekers that provides support for both the logistics of job seeking as well as emotional distress may help people find employment and improve emotional well-being.

Background: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is one of the most common causes of heel pain. With its treatment being mainly conservative, a lot of controversy surrounds the choice of the best conservative management for this entity. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the effectiveness of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) to other conservative treatment options for the management of plantar fasciitis PF.

A newly identified subtype of hereditary axonal motor neuropathy, characterized by early proximal limb involvement, has been discovered in a cohort of 34 individuals with biallelic variants in von Willebrand factor A domain-containing 1 (). This study further delineates the disease characteristics in a cohort of 20 individuals diagnosed through genome or exome sequencing, incorporating neurophysiological, laboratory and imaging data, along with data from previously reported cases across three different studies. Newly reported clinical features include hypermobility/hyperlaxity, axial weakness, dysmorphic signs, asymmetric presentation, dystonic features and, notably, upper motor neuron signs.

Should we care about the biomechanics of the foot or the full locomotor system? Anatomic changes are the main concerns of an orthopedic surgeon; however, the main objectives of treatment for lesser toe dysfunctions are to relieve the patient's symptoms to preserve or improve function. It is imperative to understand that the foot is part a three-dimensional biokinetic system that needs to function combined so that loads are harmoniously distributed throughout the body without harmful effects, especially for one of the most frequent voluntary neuromotor tasks in humans: walking.

Historically, the wind-up delivery is considered a more biomechanically advantageous pitching motion compared to the stretch. Recently, some pitchers have shifted to pitching exclusively from the stretch regardless of the game situation. The goal of this study was to compare temporal, kinematic and kinetic variables between the wind-up and stretch deliveries.
