Improving Access to Community-Based Services for Sexual Assault Survivors.

Background: Emergency department (ED) encounters are often the only healthcare provider encounter for patients seeking care after a reported sexual assault (SA), making the encounter a crucial opportunity to connect patients to support services in the community. An opportunity existed at an urban Level II trauma center to standardize SA discharge planning.

Aims: This quality improvement project aimed to improve access to SA support services.

Physicians-in-training and advanced practice providers perceptions in managing perioperative obstructive sleep apnea: a multi-institutional survey.

Study Objectives: Physicians-in-training (residents, fellows) and Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) receive limited education on sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). They often assess patients first. We aimed to understand their views on OSA and screening for OSA in the perioperative period.

System-level interventions for fall risk assessment, fall prevention and fall injury prevention in long-term care facilities: a scoping review.

Objectives: Older adults living in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) are at high risk for falls. Interventions to prevent falls and fall-related injury in this population may be individual-level or system-focused interventions. However, relatively little attention has been given to research on system-focused interventions.

Objective: Falls are a significant concern in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) as fall-related injuries can result in functional impairment, disability and death. Older adults living in LTCFs are at greater risk for falls than those in the community. Using scoping review methodology, we aimed to synthesise evidence examining intervention effects of person-focused interventions for risk assessment and prevention in LTCFs in order to identify evidence-based practices in LTCFs.

Symptom Burden Contributes to Sleep Problems Through Depressive Symptoms in Middle-Aged and Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Multigroup Analysis.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between symptom burden and sleep problems and the role of depressive symptoms on these relationships in middle-aged and older adults with type 2 diabetes.

Methods: The study employed a cross-sectional, correlational design with secondary analysis. De-identified data sets from three original studies were combined.

Outcomes of postgraduate fellowships and residencies for nurse practitioners: An integrative review.

Background: In 2011, the Institute of Medicine published a report on the future of nursing, which recommended nurse practitioner postgraduate training in the form of fellowships or residencies. Since then, the number of postgraduate programs has grown, but data is still scarce regarding their efficacy and benefits.

Aim: The goal of this integrative review is to synthesize available literature regarding the outcomes of nurse practitioner postgraduate fellowships and/or residencies on clinical competence and perceived readiness to practice.

Roadmap for integrating the AACN essentials with perioperative nursing.

Faculty members teaching in pre-licensure nursing programs are entrusted with revising nursing education to meet the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education. Colleges of nursing faculty experience difficulty establishing enough clinical sites as healthcare facilities continue to overcome staffing challenges since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Perioperative nursing is an underutilized area despite the potential for students to attain valuable nursing competencies and experiences in perioperative areas.

The Gut Microbiome and Symptom Burden After Kidney Transplantation: An Overview and Research Opportunities.

Many kidney transplant recipients continue to experience high symptom burden despite restoration of kidney function. High symptom burden is a significant driver of quality of life. In the post-transplant setting, high symptom burden has been linked to negative outcomes including medication non-adherence, allograft rejection, graft loss, and even mortality.

Objectives: Ineffective nurse-to-nurse handoff communication is associated with information omissions, diagnostic errors, treatment errors, and delays. New nurses report a lack of confidence and ability in handoff communication, which may stem from inadequate training in prelicensure nursing programs. Our objective was to introduce prelicensure nursing students to a standardized, theory-based method for handoff, including behavioral strategies employed by nurses during interrupted handoff.

Effectiveness of Trauma-Informed Care Implementation in Health Care Settings: Systematic Review of Reviews and Realist Synthesis.

Purpose: Given the ubiquity of traumatic exposures and the profound impact of trauma on health, a trauma-informed care (TIC) approach in health care is critical. TIC seeks to promote safety within health care and prevent retraumatization. The lack of systems-level data has been a major barrier to TIC implementation.

Evidence-based simulation: Fostering competency through structured and multisource feedback.

Preclinical simulation is an evidence-based method for nurse practitioner (NP) students to improve clinical communication and disease management competency. During simulation, students may receive feedback from multiple sources, including standardized patients (SPs), faculty, peers, and themselves. Although evidence supports simulation with multisource feedback, its impact on clinical knowledge and communication has yet to be evaluated among NP students.

Personalized Mobile Health-Enhanced Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Maternal Distress: Examining the Moderating Role of Adverse Childhood Experiences.

Background: Maternal history of trauma is a risk factor for distress during pregnancy. The purpose of this paper was to examine the theorized differential impact of a cognitive behavioral intervention (Mothers and Babies Personalized; MB-P) on maternal distress and emotional regulation for those with ≥ 1 adverse childhood experiences (ACEs; vs no ACEs) from pregnancy to 3 months postpartum.

Methods: Between August 2019 and August 2021, eligible pregnant individuals aged ≥ 18 years, < 22 weeks' gestation, and English-speaking were recruited from 6 university-affiliated prenatal clinics.

Stress and human health in diabetes: A report from the 19 Chicago Biomedical Consortium symposium.

Stress and diabetes coexist in a vicious cycle. Different types of stress lead to diabetes, while diabetes itself is a major life stressor. This was the focus of the Chicago Biomedical Consortium's 19 annual symposium, "Stress and Human Health: Diabetes," in November 2022.

Surgical plume is produced when heat-generating instruments are used to cut, cauterize, or vaporize tissue during surgery. Surgical plume can rapidly diffuse, and without the use of plume evacuators to ensure it is captured, filtered, and removed, health care workers and patients are at risk for inhalation exposure to airborne contaminants, including smoke and biological hazards. The use of surgical plume evacuators in health care facilities is inconsistent across the United States.

Nurses' Experience After First Wave of COVID-19: Implications for a Trauma-Informed Workforce.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted nurses worldwide, increasing their risk of burnout and compassion fatigue. Although the literature on nurse deployment has been limited, this study describes nurses' experience and assesses their professional quality of life after the first phase of the pandemic and redeployment efforts.

Methods: In 2020, nurses returning from their deployment to COVID-19 treatment units were invited to complete the Professional Quality of Life Survey and gather for debrief sessions, referred to as campfires, in which semistructured questions about their experiences were administered among clinical nurses and nurse leaders.

Feasibility of implementing acupuncture in medically underserved breast cancer survivors (FAB): A protocol.

Nearly 94% of breast cancer survivors experience one or more symptoms or side effects during or after endocrine therapy. Joint pain, hot flashes, sleep disturbance, fatigue, depression, and anxiety are the most common concurrent symptoms, some of which can persist for 5 to 10 years. Acupuncture is a holistic modality that addresses multiple symptoms and side effects in a single therapy.

Serum total tau, neurofilament light, and glial fibrillary acidic protein are associated with mortality in a population study.

Background: Total tau (t-tau), neurofilament light (NfL), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) are neuronal cytoskeletal biomarkers that may indicate greater risk of poor outcomes in age-related conditions, including mortality. Health disparities experienced by some racial minority subgroups may influence biomarker expression and effects on longevity. We aimed to examine (a) associations of serum t-tau, NfL, and GFAP with overall and cardiovascular mortality and (b) differences in associations by racial background.

Experiences of stigma, mental health, and coping strategies in Lebanon among Lebanese and displaced Syrian men who have sex with men: A qualitative study.

Background: In Lebanon, men who have sex with men (MSM) face high rates of stigma, discrimination, and violence. Minority stress, or the unique stressors related to anti-MSM stigma and discrimination, negatively impacts the mental health of MSM. These stressors are heightened for those with intersectional minority identities such as displaced Syrian MSM in Lebanon.

Evaluating an Advanced Practice Provider-Managed Coronavirus Disease 2019 Deterioration Program.

Background: COVID-19 changed how healthcare systems could provide quality healthcare to patients, safely. An urban healthcare system created an advanced practice provider (APP)-managed continuous remote patient monitoring (cRPM) program.

Methods: A mixed-method study design focusing on the usable and feasible nature of the cRPM program.

Improving Domestic Violence Screening and Follow-Up in a Community Health Clinic.

Purpose: To implement an improved DV screening and follow-up protocol at a suburban community health clinic that is consistently used by staff with appropriate female patients as well as to assess provider/staff barriers to this.

Methods: The project was completed at a community health clinic and included 2 presentations: the first to outline current practices as well as the intervention plan at the pre-intervention time point and then to review results of the intervention and elicit feedback post intervention. Provider/staff barrier surveys were completed at both time points.
