Proper lung function requires the maintenance of a tight endothelial barrier while simultaneously permitting the exchange of macromolecules and fluids to underlying tissue. Disruption of this barrier results in an increased vascular permeability in the lungs, leading to acute lung injury. In this study, we set out to determine whether transcriptional targets of Notch signaling function to preserve vascular integrity.

DEAD-box helicases are multifunctional proteins participating in many aspects of cellular RNA metabolism. DEAD-box helicase 41 (DDX41) in particular has pivotal roles in innate immune sensing and hematopoietic homeostasis. DDX41 recognizes foreign or self-nucleic acids generated during microbial infection, thereby initiating anti-pathogen responses.

Objective: Nontyphoidal infection is one of the most common foodborne illnesses, and its oncogenic potential has been documented in animal models. The primary goal of this study was to examine whether individuals who were exposed to enteric infection are more likely to develop colorectal cancer (CRC) than the general population through the linkage of 2 statewide public health surveillance databases.
Materials And Methods: We designed a 2-stage probabilistic linkage, starting with 17,587 records of enteric salmonellosis reported to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services between 1992 and 2020.

Introduction: Angiotensin II (ATII) maintains blood pressure via RAAS with a beneficial adverse effect profile versus catecholamines and phenylephrine. Head-to-head data comparing ATII to phenylephrine are lacking regarding renal allograft function, hemodynamic efficacy, and safety within the perioperative period of kidney transplantation.
Methods: This single-center, retrospective study included adult kidney transplant recipients who received continuous infusions of ATII or phenylephrine within a 24-h perioperative period as a first-line vasopressor according to an institutional algorithm.

Background: Emerging data suggest that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) improve kidney outcomes for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Direct comparisons of the kidney and cardiovascular effectiveness of GLP-1 RA with sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), a first-line therapy for this population, are needed.
Objectives: The authors compared kidney and cardiovascular outcomes for new users of SGLT2i and GLP-1 RAs with T2D.

Introduction: There is limited evidence as to the effect of sex on the outcomes of patients admitted for ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) who have a concomitant diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We aimed to determine if there are differences in the outcomes between males and females in these patient populations.
Methods: Data were obtained from the National Inpatient Sample database and patients were selected using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision (ICD-9 and -10) codes.

Background: Robotic-assisted kidney transplant (RAKT) has proven to be a successful approach for patients with morbid obesity and more centers are encouraged to apply robotic approach also for deceased donor kidney transplantation. Prolonged cold ischemia time (CIT) is accompanied by delayed graft function (DGF) and early graft loss after traditional open kidney transplant (OKT). This study examines the impact of CIT after robotic kidney transplantation on settings of deceased donation.

Background: Outcomes and susceptibility to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are known to differ by sex, yet little is known about changes in sex hormones after OHCA. We sought to determine the trajectory of sex hormones after OHCA and their association to survival and neurological outcome.
Methods: Plasma samples were collected from those that survived to hospital admission at four time points (1, 6, 24, and 48 h) and estrone, estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone concentrations were quantified via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

Objectives: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a widely prevalent condition, however its degree of severity according to sex requires further study. The literature shows that sex-based differences exist in the severity of asthma and allergic airway disease in the population. These findings point to a potential hormonal cause for this difference, but there is no study suggesting the role of sex in CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP).

To enable interrogation of tumor HLA LOH as a clinical diagnostic for precision oncology, we developed and validated an assay that detects HLA LOH within the context of an FDA-approved clinical diagnostic test, Tempus xT CDx. Validation was conducted via: (1) analytical evaluation of 17 archival patient samples and 42 cell line admixtures and (2) independent clinical evaluation of LOH prevalence in the HLA-A gene (HLA-A LOH) across 10,982 patients. To evaluate the prognostic relevance of HLA-A LOH we assessed 256 immunotherapy-treated non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

Rationale: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is characterized by severe affective symptoms during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. There is some evidence of altered interactions between the hypothalamic pituitary gonadal (HPG) and hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axes in PMDD. There is also evidence that similar affective disorders such as major depression and perinatal depression are associated with dysregulation in immune factors, but this has not been characterized in PMDD.

Background: Treatment strategies for a symptomatic accessory navicular include both operative and nonoperative approaches. The primary aim of this study is to define health utility values for 7 health states experienced by those with a symptomatic accessory navicular who undergo operative and/or nonoperative treatment. Secondarily, the study incorporates the health utility values with treatment costs, probabilities of various outcomes, and duration of health states into a cost-effectiveness model comparing the nonoperative treatment protocol at our institution vs surgical excision.

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) is a major cholesterol carrier responsible for lipid transport and injury repair in the brain. The human APOE gene (h-APOE) has 3 naturally occurring alleles: ε3, the common allele; ε4, which increases Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk up to 15-fold; and ε2, the rare allele which protects against AD. Although APOE4 has negative effects on neurocognition in old age, its persistence in the population suggests a survival advantage.
