We conducted an online questionnaire-based cross-sectional study to clarify psychiatrists' perspectives on virtual networking events. We compared two groups of respondents: those who had participated in virtual networking events (experienced group, = 85) and those who had not (inexperienced group, = 13). The experienced group had a greater level of agreement than the inexperienced group that virtual events were generally useful and helped with forming professional relationships and improving professional skills.

Background: Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis (DSP) is an unstable psychotic state in patients with schizophrenia due to an upregulation of dopamine D2 receptors induced by antipsychotic medication. Long-acting antipsychotic injectable (LAI) could be advantageous for controlling the dopamine supersensitivity state, but it is not known if long-term treatment with LAI might ultimately lead to development or exacerbation of DSP.
Methods: The present study included 58 patients who had been treated with LAI for at least 3 years, with medical records for the 3 years before its introduction.

Background: Hikikomori is a form of severe social withdrawal that is particularly prevalent in Japan. Social media posts offer insight into public perceptions of mental health conditions and may also inform strategies to identify, engage, and support hard-to-reach patient populations such as individuals affected by hikikomori.
Objective: In this study, we seek to identify the types of content on Twitter related to hikikomori in the Japanese language and to assess Twitter users' engagement with that content.

Multiple lines of evidence indicate that antipsychotic agents could affect brain structures of schizophrenia patients. However, the effect of antipsychotic dosage or type on brain structure is uncertain. The present study retrospectively analyzed brain computed tomography (CT) images from a psychiatric hospital to examine the relationship between cumulative dose of antipsychotics and brain volume reduction in schizophrenia patients.

Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis (DSP) is a key factor contributing to the development of antipsychotic treatment-resistant schizophrenia. We examined the efficacy and safety of blonanserin (BNS) and olanzapine (OLZ) as adjuncts to prior antipsychotic treatment in patients with schizophrenia and DSP in a 24-week, multicenter (17 sites), randomized, rater-blinded study with two parallel groups (BNS and OLZ add-on treatments) in patients with schizophrenia and DSP: the ROADS Study. The primary outcome was the change in the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) total score from baseline to week 24.

Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis (DSP) in patients with schizophrenia is induced by treatment with a high dosage of antipsychotics for a long time period, and it is characterized by unstable psychotic symptoms. The upregulation of dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) provoked by antipsychotics underlies DSP. Aripiprazole does not cause an excessive blockade of DRD2 and is less likely to upregulate DRD2 by aripiprazole's dopamine partial agonistic profile.

Background: Approximately one-third of schizophrenia patients eventually develop treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). Although the time course of TRS development varies from patient to patient, the details of these variations have not been clarified. The present study compared the duration of time required to achieve control of the first-episode psychosis (FEP) between patients who went on to develop TRS and those who did not, in order to determine whether a bifurcation point exists for the transition to TRS.

Although many studies report various factors related to future employment of schizophrenia patients, few identify the treatable or improvable ones. The responses to the first year of treatment and daily antipsychotic drug doses may be the treatable and improvable factors. We surveyed 235 schizophrenia outpatients in three facilities, of whom 129 and 106 were employed and unemployed, respectively.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to calculate the burden of 3 major diseases (cancer, heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease [CVD]) using the cost of illness (COI) method.
Methods: As a modification of the original COI method developed by Rice, the estimated comprehensive COI (C-COI) of cancer, heart disease, and CVD were redefined. C-COI consists of medical direct, morbidity, and mortality costs (MtCs; components of the original COI); long-term care (LTC) direct cost (DC); and family burden (FB).

Unlabelled: Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis (DSP) resulting from antipsychotic treatment is related to treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS), and its treatment has not been established to date. Maintaining thoroughly stable occupancy of the dopamine D2 receptor by risperidone long-acting injectable (RLAI) is one strategy for treatment. In this study, RLAI was given as an adjunctive medication to oral antipsychotic(s), which were switched partially and gradually to RLAI in 108 treatment-resistant patients for an additional 1-year follow-up in a 2-year study, and to compare the effects in 72 patients with a DSP history (DSP group) and 36 patients without this history (NonDSP group).

Background: Although a variety of factors are known to be significantly related to poor prognosis in schizophrenia, their interactions remain unclear. Dopamine supersensitivity psychosis (DSP) is a clinical concept related to long-term pharmacotherapy and could be one of the key factors contributing to the development of treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS). The present study aims to explore the effect of DSP on progression to TRS.

Background: In Japan, hospitalization for the assessment of mentally disordered offenders under the Act on Medical Care and Treatment for the Persons Who Had Caused Serious Cases under the Condition of Insanity (the Medical Treatment and Supervision Act, or the MTS Act) has yet to be standardized.
Methods: We conducted a written survey that included a questionnaire regarding hospitalization for assessment; the questionnaire consisted of 335 options with 9 grades of validity for 60 clinical situations. The survey was mailed to 50 Japanese forensic mental health experts, and 42 responses were received.
In October 2001, Nanashakon, a council composed of seven psychiatry-related organizations in Japan, decided to launch an investigation into forensic psychiatry in Japan, and established a working team (WT) for this purpose. From its establishment to March 2004, the WT performed surveys and analyses of the current situation of preliminary reports by psychiatric experts (preliminary reports) and of psychiatric practice in correctional facilities. Based on the results, the WT has presented proposals including guidelines for preliminary reports.
