Objectives: Prostatic urethral lift (PUL) for benign prostatic hyperplasia has recently been initiated in Asia; therefore, few studies with real-world data have been reported. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of PUL using Japanese real-world multicenter data.

Methods: Indications for PUL were based on relevant guidelines in Japan.

Utilizing Bladder Diaries to Prevent Unnecessary Treatment in Patients With Storage Dysfunction: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction A frequency volume chart (FVC) or bladder diary (BD) is used to diagnose lower urinary tract symptoms and to determine the effectiveness of treatment. In outpatient practice, patients who use an FVC or BD may experience improvement in storage symptoms and not desire further treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics of patients who did not desire treatment after BD recording and to assess the changes in storage symptoms after BD recording.

Usefulness of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)-Related Procedures for Gallstone Pancreatitis.

Introduction: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) are said to be useful procedures for gallstone pancreatitis. However, there have been few reports on a large number of patients to whom they were used. The clinical usefulness of ERCP and EST is herein examined retrospectively.

Usefulness of Elobixibat in Patients With Chronic Constipation After Cholecystectomy.

Background: There have been reports that elobixibat improves bowel movements in patients with chronic constipation. However, no studies have been conducted to date to examine bowel movements after the administration of elobixibat in patients with chronic constipation in terms of the presence or absence of the gallbladder. In this study, we examined the frequency of bowel movements and stool forms in patients with gallbladders and post-cholecystectomy patients before and after the administration of elobixibat for chronic constipation.

Assessing outcomes and complications of secondary hepatolithiasis after choledochoenterostomy: A nationwide survey in Japan.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes and complications of secondary hepatolithiasis following choledochoenterostomy to guide suitable management.

Methods: The study analyzed 127 patients from a 2017 national survey conducted by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare. The 2023 cohort study assessed residual stones, recurrences, cholangitis, cholangiocarcinoma, and prognosis.

JMJD6 Autoantibodies as a Potential Biomarker for Inflammation-Related Diseases.

Inflammation is closely associated with cerebrovascular diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancers, and it is accompanied by the development of autoantibodies in the early stage of inflammation-related diseases. Hence, it is meaningful to discover novel antibody biomarkers targeting inflammation-related diseases. In this study, Jumonji C-domain-containing 6 (JMJD6) was identified by the serological identification of antigens through recombinant cDNA expression cloning.

Potential of Cranberry Jelly to Prevent Urinary Stone Formation After Cutaneous Ureterostomy: A Case Report.

One complication of cutaneous ureterostomy is urinary stone formation, which may lead to recurrent pyelonephritis. Frequent catheter changes and the prophylactic administration of antibiotics are commonly used to prevent stone formation. Cranberry products have been reported to inhibit stone formation in indwelling urethral catheters.

Background: Several studies have explored the long-term prognosis of patients with asymptomatic gallbladder stones. These reports were primarily conducted in facilities equipped with beds for addressing symptomatic cases.

Background: Immunocytochemistry (ICC) is an indispensable technique to improve diagnostic accuracy. ICC using liquid-based cytology (LBC)-fixed specimens has been reported. However, problems may arise if the samples are not fixed appropriately.

GADD34 activates p53 and may have utility as a marker of atherosclerosis.

We previously identified growth arrest and DNA-damage-inducible gene 34 (GADD34) as a marker of ischemic stroke. In the present study, serum levels of anti-GADD34 antibodies were found to be significantly higher in patients with acute ischemic stroke or chronic kidney disease compared to healthy donors. We then examined the biological function of GADD34 by transfection into U2OS human osteosarcoma and U87 human glioblastoma cells.

Efficacy of Transcutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation With Silver Spike Point® Electrodes for Refractory Overactive Bladder: A Single-Arm Study.

Background Tibial nerve stimulation therapy is a treatment option for an overactive bladder. A surface electrode called a Silver Spike Point® electrode, which does not directly puncture the skin as in transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, but is expected to exert the same therapeutic effect as percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation, was developed. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of tibial nerve stimulation with Silver Spike Point® electrodes for refractory overactive bladder.

Serum anti‑TSTD2 antibody as a biomarker for atherosclerosis‑induced ischemic stroke and chronic kidney disease.

Autoantibodies can be used in the early diagnosis and treatment of atherosclerosis-related diseases. Using ProtoArray screening of samples from patients with atherosclerosis, the present study identified thiosulfate sulfurtransferase-like domain-containing 2 (TSTD2) as a novel atherosclerosis antigen. The serum TSTD2 antibody levels were then quantified using an amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay-linked immunosorbent assay.

Cooccurrence of Fragility Fracture of the Pelvis with Lumbar Degenerative Disease: A Case Report.

Introduction: Fragility fractures of the pelvis (FFP) are caused by low-energy impacts and can occur spontaneously in patients with severe osteoporosis. The clinical symptoms of FFP are frequently vague and nonspecific. Moreover, the symptoms of FFP can mimic lumbar spine pathologies.

Immunocytochemical Reactivity Comparison between Formalin-Fixed and Liquid-Based Cytology-Fixed Specimens.

Introduction: Liquid-based cytology (LBC)-fixed samples can be used for preparing multiple specimens of the same quality and for immunocytochemistry (ICC); however, LBC fixing solutions affect immunoreactivity. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of LBC fixing solutions on immunoreactivity.

Methods: Samples were cell lines, and specimens were prepared from cell blocks of 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF)-fixed samples and the four types of LBC-fixed samples: PreservCyt®, CytoRich™ Red, CytoRich™ Blue, and TACAS™ Ruby, which were post-fixed with NBF.

The Efficacy of Compression Stockings on Patients With Nocturia: A Single-Arm Pilot Study.

Objectives:  Behavioral treatment for nocturia includes wearing compression stockings. However, a reading of the cited literature for evidence shows that there is not enough research data to support this recommendation, and it is controversial. The present study aimed to investigate and supplement evidence on the effects of wearing compression stockings during the daytime in patients with nocturia.

Introduction And Objectives: Acute cholangitis, which is characterized by biliary infection and acute liver injury, may impact cirrhosis prognosis. However, the prognosis itself remains unclear.

Materials And Methods: This multicenter retrospective cohort study compared the mortality and liver function change between patients with and without cirrhosis who underwent endoscopic treatment for acute cholangitis caused by choledocholithiasis between January 2004 and December 2019.

Minimally Invasive "Crab-Shaped Fixation" for Treating Patients with Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis.

Introduction: In the aging society, fragility fracture of the pelvis (FFP) has become a problem. Although strong and minimally invasive fixation is required in FFP surgery, reports on relevant surgical results are scarce. Crab-shaped fixation (CSF) is a spinopelvic fixation that involves reconstruction of the posterior pelvic ring using spinal instrumentation.

Modified Socratic Method (planned and executed by Takada) for medical education: Grade II Acute Cholecystitis of Tokyo Guidelines 2018 as an example case.

Background: Socratic method, which is an educational method to promote critical thinking through a dialogue, has never been practiced in a large number of people at the academic societies.

Methods: Modified Socratic method was performed for the first time as an educational seminar using an example case of moderate acute cholecystitis based on the evidence described in Tokyo Guidelines 2018. We adopted a method that Takada had been modifying for many years: the instructor first knows the degree of recognition of the audience, then the instructor gives a lecture in an easy-to-understand manner and receives questions from the audience, followed by repeated questions and answers toward a common recognition.

Serum anti-SERPINE1 antibody as a potential biomarker of acute cerebral infarction.

The presence of disease-specific antigens and autoantibodies in the sera of patients with atherosclerosis-related diseases has been widely reported and is considered to result from inflammation of the arterial wall and the involvement of immune factors. The aim of this study was to identify a novel antibody in patients with ischemic stroke by serological identification of antigens using recombinant cDNA expression cloning from patients who had a transient ischemic attack (TIA). We identified the serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade E member 1 (SERPINE1), as a candidate antigen.
