A 63-year-old male consulted our institution due to worsening of right hip pain for approximately one month. The patient had no apparent functional disorders besides rigidity of the right ankle secondary to childhood poliomyelitis. Plain radiographs demonstrated narrowing of the right hip joint space.

[A Case of Sigmoid Colon Cancer with Synchronous Liver Metastasis, Treated with Laparoscopic Liver Resection after SOX plus BV Chemotherapy].

We performed laparoscopic liver resection in a patient with synchronous liver metastasis from advanced sigmoid colon cancer after induction with S-1 plus oxaliplatin (SOX) plus bevacizumab (BV) chemotherapy. A 61-year-old woman underwent laparoscopy-assisted sigmoidectomy for locally advanced sigmoid colon cancer with synchronous liver metastasis. SOX plus BV chemotherapy was initiated.

Mid- to long-term outcomes of posterior decompression with instrumented fusion for thoracic ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

Posterior decompression with instrumented fusion (PDF) surgery has been previously reported as a relatively safe surgical procedure for any type of thoracic ossification of the longitudinal ligament (OPLL). However, mid- to long-term outcomes are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the mid- to long-term clinical outcome of PDF surgery for thoracic OPLL patients.

This retrospective study was conducted in Japan to determine the incidence, risk factors and outcomes of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS) after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Among 4290 patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT between 1999 and 2010, 462 were diagnosed with SOS according to the Seattle criteria (cumulative incidence, 10.8%).

Background: The immunological mechanisms of asthma remission remain unclear although several reports have suggested that balance between T helper (Th) 2 cytokines and regulatory cytokines is related.

Objective: To study the balance between interleukin (IL) 10 and IL-5 in asthma clinical remission.

Methods: We measured the numbers of IL-5 and IL-10 producing cells in peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with mite antigen obtained from patients with active asthma (group A, n = 18), patients in clinical remission (group R, n = 15) and nonatopic healthy controls (group H, n = 14).

Resolution of low back symptoms after corrective surgery for dropped-head syndrome: a report of two cases.

Background: Cervical deformity can influence global sagittal balance. We report two cases of severe low back pain and lower extremity radicular pain associated with dropped-head syndrome. Symptoms were relieved by cervical corrective surgery.

A randomized controlled trial of cyclosporine and tacrolimus with strict control of blood concentrations after unrelated bone marrow transplantation.

Previous studies have suggested that tacrolimus (TAC) is more potent than cyclosporine (CSA) for prophylaxis against acute GVHD after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, the target blood concentrations of these drugs in these studies were not consistent with the current recommendations. Therefore, we performed a randomized controlled trial to compare CSA and TAC with target blood concentrations of 500 and 15 ng/ml, respectively, to prevent acute GVHD after unrelated HSCT.

Herpes zoster sciatica mimicking lumbar canal stenosis: a case report.

Background: Symptom of herpes zoster is sometimes difficult to distinguish from sciatica induced by spinal diseases, including lumbar disc herniation and spinal canal stenosis. Here we report a case of sciatica mimicking lumbar canal stenosis.

Case Presentation: A 74-year-old Chinese male patient visited our hospital for left-sided sciatic pain upon standing or walking for 5 min of approximately 1 month's duration.

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is a curative option for patients with relapsed follicular lymphoma (FL). Prospective studies of reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) have revealed that chemosensitivity at allo-SCT is the most reliable predictor of outcome; however, limited data are available for progressive/refractory disease. We report here a retrospective analysis of RIC allo-SCT for patients with FL.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor attenuates spinal cord injury-induced mechanical allodynia in adult rats.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause neuropathic pain (NeP), often reducing a patient's quality of life. We recently reported that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) could attenuate NeP in several SCI patients. However, the mechanism of action underlying G-CSF-mediated attenuation of SCI-NeP remains to be elucidated.

Neurological deterioration induced by sitting in patients after cervicothoracic posterior decompression with instrumented fusion surgery for ossification of the longitudinal ligament: two cases reports.

Background: We report on Japanese patients who showed neurological deterioration induced by sitting after cervicothoracic posterior decompression with instrumented fusion, but showed immediate neurological recovery after bed rest.

Case Presentation: Patients showed incomplete paraparesis caused by the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament at uppermost thoracic spine. Cervicothoracic posterior decompression with instrumented fusion was performed.

Purpose: The motion at the non-ossified segment of the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is thought to be highly correlated to aggravation of symptoms of myelopathy. The rationale for posterior decompression with instrumented fusion (PDF) surgery is to limit the motion of the non-ossified segment of OPLL by stabilization. The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the course of bone union and remodelling of the non-ossified segment of thoracic OPLL (T-OPLL) after PDF surgery.

Clinical significance of pretransplant serum ferritin on the outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic SCT: a prospective cohort study by the Kanto Study Group for Cell Therapy.

This prospective study aimed to investigate the influence of pretransplant serum ferritin levels on the outcomes of allogeneic hematopoietic SCT (HSCT). In total, 190 patients with acute leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome were consecutively enrolled. The patients were divided into two groups: low-ferritin group (<1000 ng/mL) and high-ferritin group (⩾1000 ng/mL).

Transplantation of human bone marrow stromal cell-derived neuroregenrative cells promotes functional recovery after spinal cord injury in mice.

Transplantation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) for spinal cord injury (SCI) has been shown to improve functional outcome. BMSCs can be easily obtained from bone marrow aspirate and have fewer problems in the clinical application for human SCI from the ethical and legal points of view. Recently, we produced cells with neural stem and/or progenitor cell property and neural regeneration supporting capacity from human bone marrow stromal cells (human bone marrow stromal cell-derived neuroregenerative cells: hBMSC-NRs).

Intramedullary hemorrhage caused by spinal cord hemangioblastoma: a case report.

Background: Hemorrhage caused by spinal cord hemangioblastoma is rare, usually presenting as a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Intramedullary hemorrhage is an extremely rare manifestation of spinal cord hemangioblastoma.

Radiograms Obtained during Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion Can Mislead Surgeons into Performing Surgery at the Wrong Level.

A 68-year-old woman who suffered from C5 nerve palsy because of a C4-5 disc herniation was referred to our hospital. We conducted anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) at the C4-5 level. An intraoperative radiogram obtained after exposure of the vertebrae showed that the level at which we were going to perform surgery was exactly at the C4-5 level.
