The comparative data for angioplasty and stenting for treatment of peripheral arterial disease are largely limited to technical factors such as patency rates with sparse data on clinical outcomes like mortality, postprocedural complications, and amputation. The study cohort was derived from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample database from 2006 to 2011. Peripheral endovascular interventions were identified using appropriate International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) Diagnostic and procedural codes.

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and tuberculosis (TB) are diseases with effective available therapy. Treating patients who are afflicted simultaneously with both of these conditions is challenging due to significant drug interactions and the requirement of strict adherence to the multi-agent treatment regimen. Here, we report a case of peritoneal tuberculosis which was successfully treated with a non-rifampin based regimen in tandem with ongoing administration of a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, dasatinib, for CML.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed outcomes of patients over 60 with aortic stenosis who underwent percutaneous aortic balloon valvotomy (PABV), comparing those who also had percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to those who had PABV alone.
  • It found that the use of PABV combined with PCI significantly increased from 5.1% in 1998-1999 to 16.6% in 2009-2010, but had similar in-hospital mortality and complication rates as PABV alone.
  • Although the combined procedure had similar length of stay, it resulted in a higher hospitalization cost, indicating that patients receiving both interventions incurred more expenses without additional mortality or complication benefits.

The cardiovascular action of hexarelin.

J Geriatr Cardiol

September 2014

Department of Biochemistry, National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, Suita, Osaka 565-8565, Japan ; Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center, Suita, Osaka 565-8565, Japan.

Hexarelin, a synthetic growth hormone-releasing peptide, can bind to and activate the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) in the brain similar to its natural analog ghrelin. However, the peripheral distribution of GHSR in the heart and blood vessels suggests that hexarelin might have direct cardiovascular actions beyond growth hormone release and neuroendocrine effects. Furthermore, the non-GHSR CD36 had been demonstrated to be a specific cardiac receptor for hexarelin and to mediate its cardioprotective effects.
